Can you recommend picture books and books for young children that feature women in construction? Any construction trade is fine. Bonus points if the women are in charge. Thanks!
I would like to go work in Antartica for a while. How do I make it happen?
I'm a single woman living with my dog. I own a 750 sq.ft. condo with two bedrooms. What should I do with my smaller bedroom?
The main "accent" wall in my living room is wallpapered in natural grasscloth (this one). I installed overhead dimmable recessed lighting but want to add two wall sconces on that wall. Is it safe to cover them in the same wallpaper (using a transparent adhesive) so they blend in during the day and softly glow at night? Are there any affordable sconces that would be particularly suitable for this application?
I'm a construction professional. I'm not a painter, but I frequently paint my own properties. Here's my question: there is an additive that makes every paint way, way better by eliminating brush or roller marks. I already pay good money for awesome paint because I know how much better it is than anything sold at big box stores. Why isn't paint sold with the miracle additive already in it? All the painters I work with know about it and think it's the best thing ever –– to be fair, only genuinely high-end clientele would notice, but that's my target group. (I won't disclose the name of the product because this is not an advertisement, I genuinely don't understand paint marketing vs. paint chemistry vs. paint marketing.)
With just about every activity that I ended up enjoying, I started out by buying cheap-ish gear and then having to purchase everything all over again when I was ready to upgrade. Help me not do that when it comes to a randonee/alpine touring ski setup to be used in the Pacific Northwest backcountry. Complications: I'm a 5'0" woman with mondo size 22 feet, don't weigh a whole lot, and I'm going back to skiing after a decade of snowboarding (lessons start next month and I tend to be a very fast learner). I've my backpack, all clothing and avy gear, but I need skis, bindings, boots, poles, and skins. I'm on a budget and unfortunately nothing is available used in my size, but I'm willing to invest. Help?
Can you recommend durable, somewhat fitted, not outrageously expensive work pants that will fit a small woman (5'0", 100 lbs, athletic build)? And by work I don't mean office-appropriate: I'm a carpenter and I spend my days at a grimy construction site.
Yesterday as I was trimming my dog's nails, I noticed that he has abrasions on three of his four paws. What do I need to do?
I just acquired a couple of light-duty (i.e. inappropriate for river salmon) fishing rods, I've received a primer in selecting tackle and setting everything up, I know my knots, I've got my permits and a Discover Pass, and my cooler is ready for some fresh catch. Where, within a 40 minutes' drive of Seattle, can I go catch delicious fish that I can cook and eat? Any recommendations for location-specific books or other resources geared toward an absolute beginner who is more enthusiastic about the food than the sport?
My Bulgarian nephew speaks no English and just enrolled in the first grade of a public school in the United States. He will be staying here until June. So far, he is handling it well and is proactive about learning English. Everyone at home has become a makeshift, round-the-clock ESL tutor and he is constantly provided with opportunities to pick up grammar and vocabulary, but his teachers don't really know what to do with him before he can communicate. What additional resources can we provide for him to help him pick up the language faster? He already has a bunch of library books, so we're looking for apps for iPad, Android, Chrome, Nintendo 3DS and other things a computer-savvy 7-year-old might enjoy. Thanks!
My very dark strand woven bamboo hardwood floors have a semi-glossy finish. Even after they've been freshly mopped, every speck of dust is visible and they'll look dirty the minute someone – wearing socks fresh out of the laundry, even – walks across the room. Is there any way I can change their finish to matte?
I love my dog. Every once in a while, I feel utterly heartbroken that I will most likely outlive him. While it doesn't happen often and it's not overwhelming, and I realize that it is perfectly natural to be sad about something like that, can you give me advice about how to turn these thoughts into something positive?
Chile, Dec 26th to Jan 5th, flying in and out of Santiago. Please help this South America newbie create an itinerary that allows us to see as much as possible in such a short time. Also, where should we, a young-ish more-or-less American couple, celebrate NYE?
I have this dress, and while it fits well at the waist and through my ribs and I've worn it before, it squishes my 30F chest in a way that does not look flattering at all. There is not enough extra fabric to let the dress out, and I can't buy a larger size. Whom in Seattle can I trust to do a great job at converting the zippered back (all the way to my nape, with mesh fabric upper half) to a lace corset back? Any other ideas?
What commuter motorcycle should I buy? Complications: I'm 5'0" and received my driver's licence motocycle endorsement this week.
Can you recommend a ladies' raincoat that won't make me sweat?
NYE in UTC+5 (West Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan) for two late-twenties Americans. Which country to pick, where to go, what to do?
I need help with sourcing unusual building materials for my DIY doghouse that looks like my ridiculous-looking house.
Other than grass, what can I plant in my pervious concrete paver driveway in Seattle, WA?
Yesterday, I picked up my 18-month-old pit bull-type mix Chance after three weeks of boarding. His coat is in bad shape in he is shedding unimaginable amounts of hair. What's the best approach to get him healthy again?
HoneymoonFilter: in a couple of weeks, we're flying into Olbia, Sardinia where a rental car is waiting for us and flying out of Ajaccio, Corsica ten days later. I haven't booked or planned anything in between. Any itinerary suggestions or tips on what we shouldn't miss? Thanks.
I need to mail approximately $1,000 worth of euros from WA to NY. We received it from our bank through FedEx, but FedEx refused to accept the shipment when I tried to send it and said that the bank must have had third party insurance. What is the best way to get the money to the opposite coast within the next couple of weeks?
We just bought a new three-story house with 2,900 square feet of gorgeous dark hardwood floors that make every single tiny speck of dust stand out (and we're about to get a short-haired, light-colored dog). How the hell do I keep this place clean without going crazy?
How does one go about finding a personal accountant in Seattle?
Bought a house, hence the DecorateMyBedroomFilter! DYI: how do I put up a curtain rod for a window whose corner meets a slanted ceiling? Décor: what kind of wallpaper should I put up on a single accent wall of my otherwise very white and neutrally furnished bedroom?
Where does it make sense to go for our late July/early August honeymoon? The wedding is in Bulgaria (nearest airports in Bulgaria are Bourgas and Sofia, but we can also fly out of Istanbul, Turkey) and afterward we'll fly home to Seattle.
Can you identify this façade-embossed red leather purse (seen in Aspen around NYE)?
I'm a graduate school dropout after a single semester. What is the best way to phrase this on my resume now that I am back on the job market?
What is the best way to get two snowboards (and associated gear) from Seattle, Washington to Aspen, Colorado if we don't know where we will be staying while there? Flying with the snowboards would be hugely inconvenient, since travel plans include two continents and several cities with extended stopovers before we eventually meet up in Aspen for NYE.
I realize this is rather last-minute, but I'd love a meetup that involves a pub, various local alcohols and the inevitable good-hearted mocking of each other's accents. Open to suggestions where to go, it'll be my first time in Scotland.
I just spontaneously booked a five day trip to Glasgow, which leaves in about 9 hours. I have never been to the UK, don't know anything about Glasgow and don't know much about Scotland. Tips for a 27-year-old American/Bulgarian (but a Swedish resident) woman traveling alone?
Were the bugs that I had to pry off of my skin ticks or bedbugs?
What is this orange apparatus on the train tracks?
Where can I buy plain fitted cotton t-shirts for women?
International banking filter: I'm moving to Stockholm from Seattle in about a month. What's the best way to set up an account in Swedish krona when the person supporting me will be giving me money in US dollars? Also, what is the cheapest and fastest way to transfer money from US accounts in USD to the Swedish (or international?) SEK account?
I have a line of credit at 10% annual interest with my local not-for-profit credit union. BMW of Seattle is currently advertising new cars at 1.9% APR. I don't know much about finances or economics, and I don't plan to buy a BMW, but I understand that the loan is unsecured, while the car is secured debt and not a big risk for the lender, but isn't that a huge difference for someone with a perfect credit score? Why the discrepancy?
How do I get rid of the smell of liquid smoke on my skin? I rubbed beef for homemade beef jerky with liquid smoke using my fingers, and now my hand smells delectable. I can't stop salivating and I'm about to start gnawing on my phalanges. Help!
Moving from Seattle to Stockholm for graduate school this summer: how far in advance of the August 29th semester start should I fly out in order to maximize my chances of renting an apartment before all other students arrive? Also, where should I stay while I'm looking for a place to live?
Thinking way, way ahead filter: I would like an industry internship for summer 2012, between the first and second year of my MSc in Biochemistry program. How do I go about securing it?
Can I eat it, oyster edition: I left a jar of fresh yearling oysters at room temperature while I went snowboarding.
Help me find a weekend retreat somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. I'll be by myself and ideally, but not necessarily, would like to learn some sort of new skill.
I want to make this belt. Help?
I have two large shoeboxes of keepsakes and souvenirs from travels over the past five years, including event tickets, hotel key cards, tourist maps, pub coasters, receipts, photo booth pictures and banknotes in about a dozen different currencies. I don't want them to live in a shoebox any more. What's a good way to organize them into an album of sorts?
How do I entertain two Texan friends over a long weekend in cold, dreary Seattle (and vicinity)?
My name is listed in the acknowledgment section of a science protocols book where the authors thank me for assistance and advice. The sections that I wrote ended up being reduced to a few sentences, and I was not listed as an author despite a promise of inclusion. Would it be appropriate to include that on my otherwise skimpy CV, or would that be considered tacky?
Houston, Texas filter. My visiting grandfather wants pictures in which he is posing in front of marvels of engineering: complicated highway overpasses, most importantly, as well as bridges and downtown skyscrapers from afar. What are the best places in town from which to take these photos?
Also, accessible tourist activities for senior who get tired quickly and don't speak English.
I will be living out of my 45 liter/2,700 cu. in. backpack for three weeks in a foreign country (Japan). Help me not lose my mind: please share your tips & tricks to stay sane.
Please recommend short books (15-35 min from start to finish) for middle schoolers who read at the 3rd through 5th grade level.
My grandparents, who are in their 70s, will be taking their first international flight from Bulgaria to the United States (with a transfer in Amsterdam) next week. They do not speak English. How can we make this easier for them?
