GEMS News: Using AI to Revolutionize Sustainable Farming GEMS Informatics is leading a transformative effort in sustainable farming by collaborating with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Water Quality Certification Program and the University of Minnesota. Together, they are addressing the challenges posed by excessive fertilizer use through advanced AI and data science techniques. By analyzing ground-truth and satellite data, GEMS identifies best management practices that minimize runoff and enhance water quality across Minnesota’s agricultural landscapes. Kevin Silverstein, Operations Manager at GEMS Informatics, highlights their approach: “We harness satellite imagery and machine learning to pinpoint sustainable farming practices like strip-till and cover cropping. These practices are crucial for mitigating environmental impact while optimizing crop productivity.” This initiative integrates expertise from various University of Minnesota entities, including U-Spatial, Research Computing, the Data Science Initiative, the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, and the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences. Free pizza and t-shirts 📣 The purpose of the Soybean Innovation Competitions is to encourage Purdue University students to exercise their knowledge and skills in creating new industrial products from soybeans. The use of natural renewable resources for creation of industrial products is a critical factor for future economic growth, given dwindling petroleum resources and increased emphasis on industrial environmental stewardship. Student teams will enter a competition to create novel products or materials using soybeans or their components focusing on the production or implementation of an example product/material. Working in teams, with two faculty advisors, students will brainstorm product ideas, create a production timeline, conduct patent searches, develop a market analysis, document the technical process of creating their product/material, design packaging, and market their product/material. Scientists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are leveraging genetic modification to enhance plants' resilience to drought stress without compromising quality or yield. While the research has primarily focused on tobacco plants due to their ease of cultivation and rapid growth, the findings will pave the way for further studies on more complex crop species. The study revealed that these modified plants use up to 30% less water while maintaining their biomass, showcasing their potential for sustainable agriculture. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) are collaborating to advance agricultural robotics research. They have issued a Dear Colleague Letter seeking innovative proposals to develop robots that can revolutionize farming practices. This partnership recognizes the critical role of robotics in addressing agricultural and food production challenges, such as increasing food demand and the need for precision agriculture. By pooling resources, NSF and USDA aim to foster interdisciplinary research to tackle these challenges and enhance sustainability. Michael Littman, director of the NSF Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, emphasized the potential to develop cutting-edge solutions benefiting both farmers and consumers. Daniel Linzell, director of the NSF Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation, highlighted the longstanding partnership and the commitment to foundational robotics research to improve agricultural safety and reduce environmental impact. Steven Thomson, National Program Leader with USDA NIFA, pointed out the promise of agricultural robotics in boosting productivity, reducing environmental impact, and improving food system resilience.
