TDC71 entries are now open! Need inspiration? Look back at this past winner in Communication Design from The New York Times Magazine. The magazine’s special issue celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with stories reflecting on rap’s history, present, and future. The visual language transported us to hip-hop’s origins, drawing from the low-fi, photocopied party flyers that promoted early jams. The pairing of Garamond and Souvenir typefaces from that era added an imperfect, human authenticity true to the culture. Submit your designs today and make your mark! TDC71 is now open for entries! Last year’s winner in the Lettering category was Thorn & Burrow Wines, a natural wine company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, known for their unique and unconventional blends. To reflect their distinct style, they sought bold, creative label designs that would set their wines apart visually. For their white blends, RG+ and RIES, and their FCK* Rosé, we crafted a high-contrast, organic, and unconventional lettering family that embodied the spirit of each wine. Additionally, a T&B monogram was designed to complement this aesthetic, featured on the back of each label and across informational materials. Enter Now-https://enter.tdc.org/

You’ve witnessed it. ITS EVERYWHERE. It’s BRAT TDC is thrilled to announce an in-person event w/ Brent David F. of SPECIAL OFFER, Inc. for an exclusive open discussion on his design process and work on Charli XCX’s ‘brat’, the state of design and opens the existential questions of what it means to be a designer... What role does critical acclaim play in the success or failure of design? Does external approval beget internal validation? Am I but a vessel (for the ideas of other creative people)? Is the pursuit of perfection in design a noble goal? It is rare for designers to achieve such global recognition that that becomes a pop culture phenomenon. This disruptive paradigm shift marks a new era in design. Join the conversation at TDC. TDC71 is officially open for entries! https://enter.tdc.org/ Let’s talk about one of last year’s standout winners in Lettering from Rolling Stone: Bad Bunny Conquered the World. As one of the biggest names of 2023, Bad Bunny’s bold style and electric presence inspired a custom font created just for this story. Drawing inspiration from the multiple chains he wears, each letter of the alphabet was carefully constructed, photographed, and pieced into dynamic headlines, pull quotes, and drop caps. The result? A design that perfectly captures Bad Bunny’s energy, with the custom type interacting seamlessly with the photos.

Young Ones TDC is now open for entries, and we’re craving… McDonald's?! 🍟 Last year's typography winner from ArtCenter College of Design, Aoran Ma, took us on a wild ride with their conceptual piece, McDonald’s Holy Bible. This project reimagines McDonald’s as more than just a fast-food chain—transforming it into a cultural institution with its own values, rituals, and teachings. Through clever AI-generated imagery, the work offers a satirical take on consumerism, making us rethink how commercial brands subtly influence our daily lives and beliefs. Interested in pushing boundaries like this? Get your entries in and show us how your work can spark a conversation!
