I’ve worked in Child Protection for many years, and I can’t count the number of times people have asked me, “What exactly is child protection?” If you’ve ever wondered the same, I hope this video helps answer that question. 📌A great opportunity for collaboration with Kazakhstan to keep children and young people safe online. Today our Policy Manager Katie Burke spoke with the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan's National Steering Committee on Protecting children from online violence, abuse and exploitation. The committee is co-led by Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Information, Committee for Children's Rights Protection of the Ministry of Education, Safe Online and UNICEF Kazakhstan. Katie spoke about the Alliance's work and our Model National Response framework, which is a key tool providing governments with a practical approach to strengthening child protection responses across sectors and implementing effective responses tailored to their unique contexts. As expertly put by Dr Najat Maalia M’jid, UN Special Representative on Violence against Children at our 2024 Global Summit, there is no longer a sharp divide between online and offline experiences. 🤔How is Gen Z experiencing the digital world? Recent research published by Snap Inc. reported that: ➡️23% of the 6,004 GenZers surveyed in six countries said they were victims of sextortion. More than half (51%) reported having been lured into certain online situations or having engaged in risky digital behaviors that could have led to sextortion. These include being “groomed” (37%), being “catfished” (30%), being hacked (26%), or sharing intimate imagery online (17%). ➡️Gen Z’s involvement with intimate imagery online remained a blindspot for parents. Just 1 in five (21%) parents of teens said they thought their teen had ever been involved with sexual imagery online. In fact, more than a third (36%) of teens admitted to such involvement – a 15-percentage-point gap. ➡️24% of Gen Z respondents said they had seen some sort of AI-generated images or videos that were sexual in nature.
