Our latest Independence with Impact report is here - sharing our work developing resources that advance disciplines, cultivate critical thinking, and drive social change. This work embodies the core values that have guided us since our founding and continue to inspire us 60 years later. The report highlights the meaningful actions we have taken as an independent company, including publishing on an array of topics that impact humanity; advocating for the value of social and behavioral science in addressing real world problems; sparking critical, evidence-based conversations both inside and outside the classroom; and supporting academic freedom. We are proud of this work and even prouder to be able to say that, as an independent company, we can continue to lead with our mission and stay firm to our values for the next 60 years and beyond. Research and Education for a Better Society
About us
Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, 24-year-old Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely. Driven by the belief that social and behavioral science has the power to improve society, we focus on publishing impactful research and enabling robust research methodology. We produce high-quality educational resources that support instructors to prepare the citizens, policymakers, educators and researchers of the future. Sage is committed to building an inclusive organization where all individuals are treated with fairness and respect, regardless of age, ability, gender, marriage and partnership status, pregnancy and parental responsibilities, race, religion and belief, socio-economic background, or sexual orientation. Diversity is one of the cornerstones of a vibrant culture and we are undertaking work to build a Sage that is more equitable and representative of the communities we serve and of which we are part. As well as driving change within Sage, we are also passionate about supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in wider society through our publishing activities. Published on the AACSB’s website, this article reflects on the progress and persistent challenges women have faced in business in the 60 years since Sara Miller-McCune published her very first journal: Urban Affairs Quarterly. It commemorates this colossal achievement by looking the legacy that Sara has left, through understanding how the roles of women entrepreneurs, leaders, and managers have changed since 1965, and what those changes have meant for business schools, using our 60th anniversary as a symbolic milestone. Sage’s editorial fellows, Arnold Fang and Hany Sheikh Mohamed, recently visited the University Of Sussex Library to explore our long-standing partnership supporting open access and DEI-focused research. During the visit, they connected with Hive scholars who are doing important work across a range of DEI-related research areas and saw firsthand the impact of creating a dedicated, inclusive space like the Hive. Now in its 11th year, Sage’s partnership with the University of Sussex Library continues to support the Sussex research community through the Research Hive and the Sussex Research Hive Scholar programme. We're proud to support "Am I by myself?" - a powerful new report from With Insight Education that centers the voices of Black-heritage students in UK higher education. The report explores how belonging deeply impacts academic success, mental health, and student wellbeing - and calls on universities to listen, act intentionally, and create more inclusive environments.

Join us on August 12 for our sixth-annual #CriticalThinkingBootcamp: The Future of Critical Thinking: https://ow.ly/mCbJ50WlRPr Higher education plays a crucial role in fostering critical thinking skills essential for a healthy society. However, global shifts in education policy and funding are making this increasingly challenging. Both students and faculty must sharpen their skills to navigate misinformation and attacks on academic freedom, scientific funding, diversity, equity, and inclusion. This event will explore how faculty and librarians can facilitate the growth of critical thinking in these areas.
