This week’s #FeaturedFriday shines the spotlight on Ross Radford, author of “𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀.” He shared a bit about his research process, target audience, and book structure: 𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “A few years back an executive friend called me. They were desperate for help on a large #softwaretesting project, they needed to understand terminology and how to hire the right experts to run a large User Acceptance Team—in two weeks! I realized leaders need concise, clear advice to get up to speed on testing. Sometimes in a very short time frame! Software Engineers already know most of these topics, but many do not, and those that do can't always articulate the best practices back up the chain of command. The most effective software testing comes from the top down.” 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “More than a decade of industry work! Some of the ideas are collected from conference talks I've given, and in general these are the ideas I have front-of-mind for my day to day work. Of course I did my due diligence and triple-checked that my reasoning and methodologies are sound before sending it out into the world. Not to mention the thoughtful contributions of my Technical Editor Kelly Hitchcock—thanks Kelly!” 𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “The primary goal has always been ease of understanding. I want this book to be easy to pick up and get started. If you are in a rush, you could probably consume all the insights in a couple days. Immediately useful actionable advice is my ideal. To that end, I tried hard to reveal new terms carefully and with plenty of context leading up to some of the more opaque industry jargon. Whenever I found myself writing ‘this term will be covered more in a future chapter.’ I would agonize, halt work and try to restructure.” For more on Ross’s book: https://lnkd.in/eiwAK8xk Want to write a tech book for Apress? This week’s #FeaturedFriday shines the spotlight on Kodi Cochran, author of “𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀.” He shared a bit about his inspiration and writing experience: 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “Part of having my certifications with #CompTIA and (ISC)2 requires on-going learning and/or in-field contributions. I personally love to learn something new, however, I also want to help others. Initially the book was an effort to assist as many as I can within the field by making positive contributions.” 𝗤: 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀... “I wanted to write about the vast majority of topics within the #cybersecurity field and with this being my first publication, that included a fair amount of topics. The first thing that I did was write down each domain that I wanted to cover. Afterward, I filled the domains out with subtopics and continued to branch downwards in a hierarchical way. Once I had all of my topics covered, I looked into the order at which I wanted to introduce them to the book to make sure that each topic went in a logical and coherent order. I didn't want the reader to have to jump between topics to understand the material.” 𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? “I actually really enjoyed it a lot more than I would have ever imagined. It was very refreshing to review my knowledge and skill sets within the field, while also broadening my understanding on additional topics. I wouldn't say it was easier than expected but it was a lot more seamless than I would have anticipated.” For more on Kodi’s book: https://lnkd.in/daK3sFKR Want to write a tech book for Apress? This week’s #FeaturedFriday shines the spotlight on Harry Borovick, author of “𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄: 𝗔 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆.” He shared a bit about his inspiration and writing experience: 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻/𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “I simply couldn’t find anything out there which was aimed at the most ordinary reader, who may just want to use some #AI in their day-to-day life without stepping on a figurative landmine. There are amazing lawyer-focused books, or technical books on AI—but definitely a greater home for a book that aims to empower a typical member of the public.” 𝗤: 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀... “Collaboration for me was key. I first researched, and spoke with colleagues and subject matter experts. Then, I focused on writing in bursts. Particularly very early mornings before work, and on weekends. However, if I could do it again, I would increase the consideration of health and wellbeing as well as ethics—whether that is related to AI in autonomous vehicles, or in matters of defense and security.” 𝗤: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? But, if so, I’d be inspired to write something more focused on responsibility and ethics around AI. That will be the next frontier of human self-understanding and is full of challenging moral questions.” 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? 𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿? “𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘸 by Daniel Kahneman. This week’s #FeaturedFriday shines the spotlight on Peter Cohan, author of “𝘽𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙪𝙨𝙝: 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝘼I.” He shared a bit about his inspiration and writing experience: 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “I’ve written and thought a lot about technological waves. I wrote the book because I wanted to surf the #generativeAI wave. Several decades ago I was part of the startup team of a company seeking to commercial artificial intelligence to help personal financial planners. The lessons I learned from that company have infused my work since. I also wrote three books about the dot-com boom—during which time I invested in several startups. In May 2023, Nvidia's mind-blowingly optimistic growth forecast made me realize generative #AI could be as big or bigger than the world wide web was in the 1990s. That kicked me into gear to write ‘Brain Rush.’” 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲? “Since it was my 17th book, I've developed a process that works back from the deadlines in my contract. I try to produce first drafts of two chapters a month. I spend a week or two doing secondary research and conducting interviews for each chapter. After uploading the first drafts, I often seek out feedback from industry experts. I also got great feedback from Apress and was able to deliver the manuscript on time.” 𝗤: 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “I would like to write more books and I would keep the process the same. For ‘Brain Rush’ everything was changing so fast that I had to make significant updates closer to the deadline to make sure the book was as relevant as possible at the time of publication. I think it is better to use as much original material based on interviews and other research as possible. I would try to do more of that for future books.” 𝗤: 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸/𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀—𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸? “As a full-time professor I often get time off from teaching during the summer. In the summer of 2023, I started writing ‘Brain Rush’ and was able to do much of the writing before classes started. By then, I had established a good rhythm which I continued to do on the days I was not teaching.” 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸: https://lnkd.in/ezAZXfJH Want to write a tech book for Apress? This week’s #FeaturedFriday shines the spotlight on Alexsandro Souza, author of “Tech Leadership Playbook: Building and Sustaining High-Impact Technology Teams.” He shared a bit about his writing experience and inspiration: Q: Describe the experience of writing your book. “Writing my book has been an exciting and long journey. I’ve been writing articles for over 10 years, and it all began with a simple desire to share knowledge about what I was working on at the time. Over the years, this evolved into a true passion for helping the software community through articles, online courses, event speaking, and now, this book.” Q: What inspired you to write it? “With over 14 years of experience in both startups and large corporations, I’ve rarely encountered companies that employ structured, best-practice-driven teams. Too often, teams face common and avoidable issues due to a lack of adherence to established standards and principles. My inspiration for writing the book was to help teams improve their operations by following well-established best practices.” Q: How did you decide on the structure and organization? “I structured the book to start with the less technical aspects of software development, such as team building and project management. It then progresses into more technical topics, like code quality, design and architecture, QA, the software development lifecycle (SDLC), and observability.” Q: How did you decide on the target audience for your book? “This book is designed to fill the gap by equipping leaders with the insights and tools necessary to build and manage high-performing software development teams. The target audience includes anyone interested in learning more about best practices in different areas of software development.” For more on Alexsandro’s book: https://lnkd.in/eH8VWhEA Want to write a tech book for Apress?
