I just published the Signals Research Group - SRG 46th report on 5G, this time with a particular focus on uplink performance, specifically the incremental benefits of a 3Tx transceiver architecture in a CPE compared with a 2Tx transceiver architecture. To make things interesting, I even tossed in a Galaxy S23 smartphone which is limited to a single uplink layer. For this study we used the T-Mobile network in Irvine, California where Ericsson Networks is the infrastructure supplier. Needless to say, there can be meaningful gains in throughput with the additional layer – nothing like stating the blinding obvious. What is more interesting is how those gains are influenced by the radio conditions, specifically RSRP. I also compared the performance of UL-MIMO in Band n41 versus UL-CA in Band n41 + Band n25. Both scenarios involved two uplink layers, albeit two layers in Band n41 (UL-MIMO) versus one layer each in Band n41 and Band n25 (UL-CA). We've adopted final spectrum rules for auto safety to support cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) tech in the 5.9 GHz band. We're dedicating space for vehicle sensors to communicate with others using the road. C-V2X technology provides direct communications between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and other road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, and road workers to facilitate, among other things, non-line-of-sight awareness, notice of changing driving conditions, and automated driving. More communication = more safety.
