Last week, we had the chance to connect with friends, partners, and CC community members at Mozilla Festival in Zambia. MozFest House Zambia centered AI, Tech, and several intersections such as economic justice, inclusion, governance, and more. Angela Oduor Lungati, a member of the CC board, delivered a rallying keynote entitled "The End & the Means to that End", more on that below. Thank you to Mozilla Festival for having us and organizing such an impactful coming together of the minds.

What an exceptional two days Mozilla Festival Zambia was! I was honored to give a keynote speech grounded in our experiences at Ushahidi (Link here: https://lnkd.in/d5wyksy8). Some key highlights from my talk:- 1. Technology is a means to an end. Technology alone will not change the world; how we use it is what will. Our approach to artificial intelligence today needs to be grounded in this reality. 2. Responsible and Trustworthy AI has massive potential to accelerate our path to a vibrant, sustainable future for Africa ( Please check out values for what responsible and trustworthy AI looks like, thanks to Mozilla https://lnkd.in/d2wqf_je ) 3. It’s worth noting that we have significant roadblocks slowing us down from achieving this AI-enabled future, including a) extractive data practices within a space that already has glaring data gaps leading to inadequate representation, b)power and control residing in the hands of a select few *cough* big tech *cough*, and how that dominance skews our ability to build local solutions c)inadequate resource in terms of talent, compute and funding( whether in the for-profit or non-profit sector) 4. Fixing these roadblocks will require collective action and collaboration grounded in African values and our lived realities. Innovation doesn’t come from following the rational path. In the same way that mobile money followed the irrational path of bringing banking to people where they are, what will that look like for building our African AI ecosystem? Thanks so much to the entire Mozilla Foundation for curating an inspiring festival - the energy was palpable, and I think we all left there with renewed purpose to work with unusual co-conspirators (I’m stealing your line, J. Bob!) and new friendships! Special shout out to Koliwe for the brilliant moderation and conversation, and Zeina(in absentia. We missed you!). And the entire village of MoFo staff behind the scenes, you all know yourselves <3. You were such a fun crew to work with. I’m looking forward to exploring the connections made and working together and in solidarity to achieve an AI-enabled, vibrant, and sustainable future. What a wonderful couple of days at the 3rd UNESCO World Open Educational Resources Congress! Anna Tumadottir presented on the main stage on the role of open licensing in the future of education. Cable Green, PhD, who also presented, and Jennryn Wetzler had the opportunity to connect with other #OER leaders on CC’s approach to #AI and inclusive access to knowledge. 💪 We’re committed to doing our part to realize the UNESCO 2019 Recommendation on OER, and optimize openly licensed content to address the challenges & opportunities posed by emerging technologies. 🔊 P.S. If you are interested in learning more about the CC licenses and OER, registration is now open for the CC Certificate for Educators, running in January, June, and September, 2025. It was based on the ongoing work of the organisations behind the Common(s) Cause event, which took place in Katowice, Poland; as a pre-conference event for #Wikimania 2024 on 6 August, 2024. Emerging differences in policies across Europe - SPARC Europe is hosting a webinar as part of the KnowledgeRights21 programme. The session will explore how different European countries are approaching rights retention policy making. The webinar is fully online and registration is now open. 📆 8-14/12: 2nd Global Diamond OA Summit - This weeklong summit is an opportunity for the Diamond Open Access community to get together and foster diamond open access as a pathway for inclusive and equitable participation in the scholarly publishing ecosystem. The summit tales place in Cape Town, but you can also register to attend online. 📆 9/1: Public Domain day in Europe - A day-long celebration of new material entering the public domain in the heritage sector, hosted by a range of organizations including our grantees COMMUNIA and Creative Commons. The event takes place at the KBR (Royal Library of Belgium) in Brussels and registration opens on November 21.
