First of all, I would say that Demimonde is a new masterpiece of Hungarian filmmaking, and it's really Hollywood-level. It's highly recommended to anyone who likes dark-toned crime dramas with an interesting plot, strong, well-written characters, beautiful cinematography, and very good directing. The acting is just amazing too: Patricia Kovács gives an award-winning performance -quite unexpected from her- as one of the most famous gold-digger prostitutes of Budapest in the early 1900's. We can really believe her that she can seduce any man she wants. Laura Döbrösi's character is, at least at the beginning, the complete opposite to Patricia's, but she does a great job too. This young actress has a bright future in the movie industry, that's for sure. János Kulka and Dorka Gryllus are very good too, as usual from them. The costumes, the writing, the setting, etc. are also excellent. I think I've written enough...people, when you have the opportunity, just watch it! Especially, if you're a fan of European movies. You won't regret it.
I think the biggest problem with the film is, that it is really made only for the Hungarian audience, as it requires some knowledge of the history of this nation. And even if you got this knowledge, the motivations of the characters are not really clear throughout the entire story. So the film is far from perfect, BUT apart from that, The Ambassador to Bern is a good, more than watchable movie in every aspect. János Kulka (as usual from him), gives a great performance as the title character, and the supporting actors are quite good too. It is basically a hostage drama, entertaining to almost everyone, and also pretty short, so definitely worth a watch, especially if you're a Hungarian or a fan of Hungarian movies.
I was interested in why this story became such a big success, so I went to watch it last night. My opinion is, that this story (at least in the way it was adapted to the big screen) simply isn't entertaining enough for a 2-hour movie. It starts well, the main characters are interesting at the beginning (especially Grey), but after a 30 minutes of watching, I was pretty bored. In addition, the so-called story is very predictable, even for those who didn't read the book (like myself). The acting and the soundtrack was good, Dakota Johnson is a beauty, but these things can't save an entire movie. If you're interested in this worldwide phenomenon, but don't want to read an 500 page book then go see this, it's not unwatchable and not that awful as many say, but don't expect anything from it.
