Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Refreshing, exciting, and satisfying.
Although not perfect, Zack Snyder's Justice League reaches epic proportions and delivers what it promised (and some.) It was wonderful to finally experience a worthy next entry in the SnyderVerse. I didn't think it was perfect and I wish some things were done differently, specifically some of the CGI and soundtrack. However, it won me over in the end with some top-notch action sequences and a great fan-servicing script. Anyone who considers themselves to be a DC fan or a superhero fan in general should make this one a must-watch.
The Craft: Legacy (2020)
Good first two-thirds, awful final act
The first hour of the movie was surprisingly watchable, although it rarely did anything original and borrowed the same set up as the first film. It wasn't anything amazing but it was fun at the very least. It came crashing down in the last third, where I can't even begin to explain how horrifically painful it became to watch. The ending opens the door for what could be an interesting third installment, but the movie failed at being it's own original experience. I think it's worth a watch if you're a fan of the first, but otherwise I'd skip this one.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
5 out of 10 OINKS
When the most memorable part of a movie is how many times characters 'oink' like pigs, it's not a good thing. The movie is pretty. That's about it. The story goes nowhere, the plot is unengaging, and I was left underwhelmed. The film tries too hard to be artsy, stylish, and taken serious. Unfortunately, this makes the movie feel slow and pointless. Movies should evoke emotion, making the audience feel something- whether it be sadness, fear, or excitement, etc. This one felt equivalent to sitting in a 3 hour long college lecture on cinematography. I'm not gonna say don't see this movie, but I will say that if you REALLY want to see it, I recommend you wait until you can rent/stream it to save your money and potentially time if you decide to turn it off.
The Grudge (2019)
Imagine if they remade The Ring...
But instead of calling it a remake, they call it an "interquel", and instead of taking place in America it takes place in Australia and the actors are all Australian. Oh, and Samara isn't in it. Just some other ghosts. That's The Grudge (2020). Now don't get me wrong, the originals don't hold up super well today. But at least it is a fun watch. I can't say the same thing about this movie. Or it's soundtrack. It's not A Grudge film and it's not enjoyable. Please save your money and go watch Cats. It's not good but its more fun than this I promise.
Ad Astra (2019)
Not enough monkeys
I would give this movie a 5, but the scene with space monkeys boosted it to a 6. It was pretty but incredibly slow, maybe wait for it to be illegally uploaded to YouTube and then watch it at 2x speed.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Art Gallery: The Movie
I would compare this movie to the experience of walking through an art gallery. Sometimes it's pretty or well-made. And it apparently has a purpose. But it's just boring.
Pros:
- good acting
- good writing
Cons:
- confusing and jumbled editing
- no storyline, conflict, or reason to exist
- could have been an hour or two shorter
- terrible ending.
Ma (2019)
Funniest movie I've seen in a long time
Honestly I had a great time in the theatre watching Ma. The humor was perfectly timed and I caught myself laughing to the point of tears. Amazing job on the writers part. This movie was worth the price of admission based on the scene of Octavia Spencer doing kung fu to "Kung Fu Fighting" alone. If you want to see a well written comedy, this is for YOU.
