I'm old. I'm cranky. I'm retired. I NEVER watch TV. Well, just once in a while. Right now I'm only following 489 shows on TVmaze.
I am very mysterious. I don't even know who I am really. If I told you I'd have to kill myself! Actually, I am a former musician in the U.S. as well as former CEI agent #014 (a.k.a. Bob the Late Night Courier Guy). If you don't know what that is, I can't tell you. Again, I'd have to kill myself. I can tell you this... "I've been everywhere man"... well, not really but, I did get around a little.
I can also tell you this... I'm OLD. We got our first tv when I was 3 and I've never looked back. 2 channels, b&w, blurry, snowy, static. We've come a long way baby. Try standing on one foot holding a piece of tin foil attached to antenna wire as high as you can out the top of a window with heavy snow falling in -20°F. and 45 mph winds for almost half an hour so your family can watch Groucho Marx on "You Bet Your Life". I gotta tell ya', that's when men were men and the sheep ran scared.
But enough about me, let's talk about me. I am retired now so I can devote the time it deserves to watching everything ever transmitted over the airwaves. TVmaze is fantastic for keeping track of what I've seen and what I want to see. Thank you to all the technical geniuses that keep things like this going. With the availability of torrents, streams, s/w like Kodi and Exodus, internet channels, etc. it's incredible the variety of programming you can find. It's been terrific to "discover" old series I missed while working during the pre-VCR/DVR days. Especially enjoyable are the foreign offerings from the Brits, Scots, Danes, Swedes, Aussies, Canucks and a whole lot more. I applaud cop shows that can solve a crime without killing and dismembering half the cast (well, "The Tunnel" and "The Bridge" were still excellent.) and blowing up several vehicles and a couple of buildings. It is sad though to see we aren't the only country with prejudices and discrimination. It regrettably seems to be getting worse by the day across the planet. For shame!
It's especially great to be able to get all this content these days rather than watching the abysmal behavior of purportedly "civilized" people in the news and on "reality" shows. It's hard to imagine that humanity may have reached it's peak amidst the generations spawned in the wake of two World Wars. I put a lot of hope in the youth of today but, alas, with the proliferation of atrocious, grievous hate-mongers as role models they will need extraordinary strength and courage to even attempt to right the ever increasing wrongs enveloping the world's societies. My thoughts and prayers are with future generations. Okay, I'm cautiously pessimistic... so sue me! Hey, it's the 'merican way.
I know, not a bio. Mostly an op/ed piece. I am a Patriots fan and NO! Deflategate was NOT real! FUNFL! Yes, the WhoDats got robbed! (2019)
If I think of anything interesting to add (doubtful) or feel a rant coming on I'll come back and embellish a little.

ALL LIVES MATTER! I don't say that to denigrate "Black Lives Matter". I believe united we stand. Black, brown, red, yellow, white... We're all of one race: HUMAN.
It is VERY discouraging to hear now, people that really DON'T believe all lives matter are saying "all lives matter" to defend their abhorrent behavior. Don't say "all lives matter" if you don't believe all lives matter. And, if you believe all lives matter, ACT like it... because they really do!!! (Yeah, even hateful dumbasses that have no respect for others.)

The Penguin: A Great or Little Thing (2024)
Great show, and I'm not big on all the SuperUniverse stuff
I don't follow all the Batshlt shows, movies, comics, etc. I did watch Gotham and thought it was pretty good for the most part. I enjoyed the portrayals of Oswald and Ed Nygma.
Anyway, this show was especially well done I would say. You don't need to know anything really about the genre (maybe even better if you don't) and all the different ways the characters have been represented in other forms and all the different versions of their relationships and... well, it all gets rather confusing after a while, doesn't it?
So, this is a great standalone series. Intriguing, dramatic, compelling. The writing, acting, makeup, special effects, music, everything about this show was topnotch. I hadn't seen the "The Batman" movie so I could not believe it when I checked the credits... Colin Farrell? REALLY? Wow!
The finale pretty well wrapped up all you need to know. As much as I enjoyed it, I don't know if it needs a second season. I think it would be hard to maintain the quality and probably, at this point, would require spiraling into the same old hackneyed storylines. That being said, I would certainly watch a second season it it were to be made.
Addendum: The way I rate shows...
I don't usually review anything less than a 7 because 6 would be a failing grade and I won't waste my time watching it. (I'm old; I don't know how much time I've got left.) Since I probably turned it off before getting even halfway through, it wouldn't be fair to rate or review it. It might not have been bad, maybe it just didn't interest me.
7 is watchable but I may go a while between episodes since, though somewhat entertaining, there are other shows more interesting or compelling.
8 would be a regular in my lineup.
9 is a must see and bingeable.
10 is just the epitome of superbity and headed for my all-time favorites list.
I'm adding this to my reviews because it seems there are a lot of binary reactions to pretty much everything these days. I am not a like/unlike kind of guy. I see a lot of grays so, if I give something a 10 it doesn't mean the only alternative is a 1.
American Sports Story (2024)
"Imagined and Invented" !!!???
I heard on Patriots Unfiltered this is a must see series for some uncanny portrayals of some of the individuals involved. I've watched 2 episodes so far and I've yet to come across them.
The writing, the acting, everything about this production so far (other than the nudity and language) screams MADE FOR TV!
But, my biggest gripe is the disclaimer. This is an incredible story IRL that doesn't, or shouldn't, need any embellishment or fabrication. Now we are left to ask more questions than we had before. Which parts are real and what's been made up? I think these dramatised treatments of factual events are shameful. Being made for entertainment value is no excuse. Good writers are capable of presenting stories like this in an entertaining (and informative) manner without making a bunch of stuff up. Good producers and directors should demand that. Well, so much for integtrity and credibility.
Yeah, 2 more episodes... I'm out!
The writing isn't great. The acting isn't great. How much of those private moments and personal conversations actually took place? Did they talk to anybody to confirm or just make it up as they went along?
This is very disappointing. I was looking forward to a comprehensive series that might shed some real light on a sad but intriguing story. Instead we get a 2 hour tv movie stretched out over a 10 episode season. And no, I don't think the actors playing Hernandez, RKK or BB nailed it. Sorry.
Fairy Tales for Unwanted Children (2017)
Exceptional podcast!
I never realized IMDb listed podcasts. I found this because I was searching for more information. I was behind, I guess about a couple of years, and all of a sudden hit the end of the road. The last episode I can find is from 2022. Alas! That's disappointing.
Scott's reading of his original work is fantastic. I've never been much for fairy tales or witches or ancient realms and kingdoms; But, these stories, at least to me, seem rather unique and quite compelling. They are imaginative, suspenseful, philosophical and always quite interesting. There's a subtle (or maybe not so subtle?) gender fluidity that may attract some listeners while others may prefer to clutch their pearls and listen to a Matt Walsh podcast instead.
If you like intriguing, thought provoking fiction delivered in an almost mesmerizing fashion I highly recommend Scott Thrower's "Fairy Tales for Unwanted Children".
They mostly range from approximately 10 minutes to around 20 with a few running much longer or continued over multiple episodes. They are generally stand alone though, with some occasionally making reference to a previous episode.
Constellation (2024)
I'm having a hard time...
UPDATE: I made it through episode 3 and it started getting interesting so I upgraded from 5 to 7. After completing season 1 I decided it's not as bad as I first thought, though it does still have problems it got more watchable as it went along. Watching at 1.1x speed helped. If there's a 2nd season I guess I'll give it a go. I don't want to spoil anything but, there are inconsistencies they need to clear up.
ORIGINAL: I'm having a hard time getting into this show, and not because "I don't want to think" or I'm just too obtuse to understand. To spend half an episode on the high drama of swapping a half dozen batteries is boring. Sorry. And yes, we knew she would get it done in time; Otherwise, show's over.
I agree the special effects are quality. I can't really comment on the casting, acting, directing, etc. Although I don't think Jonathan Banks is particularly great in that role.
I'm halfway through the 2nd episode and I'm not sure if I can even finish it. Many scenes seem like isolated, though somewhat relevant perhaps, events that are drawn out for intended suspense. Dragging something out doesn't make it suspenseful, it just makes it long and drawn out.
The lead character, and even the aged astronaut, having hallucinations is plausible; But, why would the daughter? Oh, I know... I have to hang in there for a few more hours to find out if there is a logical reason. Yeah, yeah... multidimensional multiverse explains everything.
Scraps of story lines from other shows and movies are not hitting the mark.
All in all I'm just not feeling enough curiosity to want to continue. If I make it much further into the series I'll come back and update this review. I have a hunch I will not be back.

The Undeclared War (2022)
All in all pretty compelling
Cyber espionage is a timely scenario and not too far fetched. Some things are a little silly, e.g. A couple of work study kids have unfettered access to a top level cyber security facility and the metaphorical simulations with tool belts and file corridors, etc. The personal relationships and ambiguities I suppose are a prerequisite these days. Irrelevant and immaterial but, no harm done to the story. Either of those extraneous avenues of sexuality and religion could have been fleshed out more thoroughly or eliminated altogether. Both seemed a little gratuitous and superficial. Really, the same goes for the boyfriend teacher and his class. Pretty good tension though and each episode does leave you with a yearning to see more. I hope it comes back.

The Consultant (2023)
The REAL mystery is...
Why on earth did I bother watching this whole series?
I guess I thought it would congeal in the end. Yeah, they pretty much wrapped up the important parts, although it felt very unsatisfying. There were a few chuckles along the way but, all in all, not worth the watch. It is an inane, disjointed pile of nonsense.
I just had to come back and address the "horror" aspect after reading some admonishments regarding the dark comedy classification. Bambi wouldn't be ascared by this show. Really people, come on. Any attempts at horror were lame at best and didn't make any sense. Yeah, a little innuendo and some slightly graphic violence but, jeez Louise... HORROR? I think not.

Saint X (2023)
What? EIGHT episodes? RUKM?
One reviewer called it a gripping mystery. My wife has fallen asleep to each of the first two episodes. I thought I might go one more since I'd like to find out who dunnit (I'm thinking at this point not the obvious setups, Gogo and Edwin) and there are only four episodes. Now I see it was commissioned for eight. No thanks, I'm out. Too draggy. Too many red herring. I'm old so my time is limited. I don't want to waste any more of it on this show.

London Kills (2019)
This is a good show.
I saw a comment on another website saying how terrible the script, plot, actors, etc. Were. I think they are deranged. This is a pretty good show and they left me pissed off at the end of series 1... I was going to take a few days before starting series 2 and NOW I CAN'T!!! What a cliff to leave me hanging on. I suggest you watch if you like twists and suspense.

The Good Karma Hospital (2017)
So critics, tell me, what IS completely original on tv these days? I've been watching tv for almost 70 years now and I can tell you... NOTHING!
Give this show a break. I don't see why some critics are so harsh. "...does not have an original bone in its body...." It's a medical drama. How different could it be from the 83,243 medical dramas that preceded it? It has decent writing, good acting, generally relatable likable characters, good production values, beautiful scenery, humor, a little suspense, a little romance, a basically optimistic outlook... you get the drift. This is entertainment. Relax a little and enjoy it for what t's worth.

Ratched (2020)
Anybody got a map?
I'm halfway through episode 3 and I think I'm done. There's a lot of big-time talent here. Too bad they don't have a better vehicle. Every good trip begins with a plan and I don't think they could agree on one... Marvel Comics? Hitchcock? Dick Tracy? Cinematic casserole? There's atmosphere aplenty, a suspenseful soundtrack and potentially intriguing plot lines; But, no direction. We need more to fill the tank. Hitting every station along the way and getting a buck's worth at a time makes for a tedious drive. The sexual scenes and preoccupancy with lesbianism seem rather gratuitous. All-in-all there are more interesting shows to watch and I'm kind of disappointed with this one.

Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
How is this version in the top 25 Christmas movies list?
The cast does have a lot of actors that I've enjoyed immensely over the years and I am not trying to denigrate anyone's performance; But, as classics go, this isn't it. Even the Ed Wynn TV movie from the 50s received higher ratings.
If you've never seen any version of "Miracle on 34th Street" you MUST see the 1947 issue starring Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn and little Natalie Wood. Then, you can skip all the others. Not because they are all that bad; But, because they are not the classic.
Big Sky (2020)
What the hellp happened to David E. Kelley?
'Nother update: I can't believe this show is getting ANY 9s & 10s. It is by far the worst show in the history of television! BUT I'M BAAACK! My wife bailed, indicating which of us has more sense.
I just had to see what another season might bring. (Okay, just 1 more episode.) I've never been one to ogle car wrecks or house fires or natural disasters; But, everything about this show is so bad I can't stop watching. I know. Makes no sense. When I saw the end of the first episode of season 2 I laughed my butt off and it hit me. I realized how much pleasure can be derived watching a blazing dumpster fire. Yeah, they're not pretty and they smell awful; But once you get the bug, it ain't easy to quit. It's kinda like smoking. I may take to listening to a police scanner to see where the catastrophes are happening.
Update: So, I've had to lower my rating AGAIN! It just keeps getting stoopiter & stoopiter. By the time it's over it will be a 0. We must be masochists. Please cancel this show so we can go on with our lives.
I'm being kind giving this show a 7. It's only because, for some inexplicable reason, my wife and I are still watching and I said I don't bother watching anything less than a 7. We're close to that point.
The show was lame from the start with so many incomprehensible actions and decisions by the characters. I can't count the times we both said "really? That happens." But, we stuck with it, because... it's David E. Kelley. It's going to get better, right?
Unfortunately, with this second season within a season, it's gotten pretty stupider. Oh, maybe they're trying for comedy? That's too bad. They missed. I'm not sure we'll make it to the end. I'm pretty sure if it comes back for a second season it shouldn't and we won't.

Chad (2021)
Just curious...
How or where did so many people see this show weeks before the premier?
It doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in but now I'm curious. I guess I've gotta see for myself.
So, I've had a chance to watch it. While it's not really my kind of show (teen oriented sitcom) I did laugh out loud, more than once. I'll probably watch again. The absurdity and awkwardness of "Chad" is both disturbing and endearing. His self-absorption creates some very humorous moments. I was also quite struck by the transformation of. Winston's girlfriend Aly into a 14 year old Chad. Remarkable.
There is obviously a great hate campaign going on here and it perfectly fits today's societal ills. But, if you're a reasonable person with a sense of humor you may find this show amusing. Though I probably won't watch on a regular basis I will break my rating rules and give it a 9 for creativity.

Mom (2013)
Oops... Sorry... I didn't know.
I'm partway in to episode 5 of season 8 and I just realised I didn't even know Christy was missing. (Yes, I was a lot like Bonnie when my kids were young.) So, I had checked "Yes", contains spoilers. Then I saw most of the critical reviews headlined "I miss Christy" so, I take it back... no spoilers here!
I saw a lot of fretting about season 8 when I was trying to refresh my memory and see if I was supposed to know Christy left..After a while I concluded I'm old, I forget things, it doesn't really matter. Even still, there are many concerned that the show has lost something without Anna Faris. Well, since I didn't realise she was gone, I guess I haven't noticed the big dropoff in show quality.
I am mostly a fan of Chuck Lorre's collaborations and "Mom" is not an exception. I must be partial to social (or maybe that should be personal?) indifference and sarcasm along with the darker shades of humor. I've loved the show since the beginning and have faith that, even as every show rides the waves of creativity, the highs will outnumber the lows as the series ages into innevitable retirement. It's very funny. Picks at the scabs of reality. I never miss it.

Filthy Rich (2020)
Has some promise but... ? we'll see
I'm going to hold off commiting to a number because I am interested enough to want to watch again and find out what happens. BUT, the acting isn't great and I'm guessing that may be on the director. The writing isn't all that hot either so I'm hoping they find their stride quickly and smooth out the rough spots. There is enough there to create some intrigue. If they can get some consistencies in the relationships and develop the characters a little it could end up being okay.
A first episode can sometimes be a little scattershot since they have to establish background quickly so we'll see if it pulls together in the next couple of episodes. It feels at times like somebody in production thinks it should be a sitcom and might be pushing for a laugh-track. I hope they keep their wits about them and nurture intelligent humor.
Don't head in the direction of taking the easy way out. Build good dialogue, maintain an interesting plot, and work on character development and relationships.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (2012)
Another excellent offering from Aussie TV.
The story lines, charcters, writing, acting, sets, period ambiance... whatever else... are all superb. While there is enough compelling mystery to keep you interested there is enough good humor to make you smile. The relationships between all the characters are mostly heartwarming. Maybe that's what draws me to Australian shows more than the hardarse bitterness and violence of American tv. Gees, there's enough gritty reality in the real world... give me a break... and a little escape. Too bad it had to end. I look forward to the movie. The 60s MOD version is fun and similar in nature so, if you like this, try that.

Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries (2019)
Not Phryne but fun.
You have to overlook the fact that Peregrine did not have the diverse, worldly background of her aunt; But, as Birdie proffers, she has the pedigree. So, apparently the necessary skills to be a top-notch investigator can be inherited if not learned. Okay, it is tv. A bit of fun tv actually. The same flirty rapport is carried over between the detectives from the original series though the relationship has less obstacles than that of Phryne and Jack. The lighthearted humor is good and the mysteries interesting enough. The writing is pretty good and the cast is excellent in their portrayal of identifiable and likeable (other than the villains) characters. The only thing I would like to see, if the series were to continue, would be a shorter format. Some scenes seem to me to be a little drawn out somewhat akin to a student stretching to achieve the minimum word count assigned to an essay. I don't think they would have any problem fitting in to a one hour time slot. I hope the show continues.
Addendum: The way I rate shows...
I don't usually review anything less than a 7 because 6 would be a failing grade and I won't waste my time watching it. I'm old; I don't know how much time I've got left. Since I probably turned it off before getting even halfway through, it wouldn't be fair to rate or review it.
7 is watchable but I may go a while between episodes since, though somewhat entertaining, there are other shows more interesting or compelling.
8 would be a regular in my lineup.
9 is a must see and probably bingeable.
10 is just the epitome of superbity and headed for my all-time favorites list.
I'm adding this to my reviews because it seems there are a lot of binary reactions to pretty much everything these days. I am not a like/unlike kind of guy. I see a lot of grays so if I give something a 10 it doesn't mean the only alternative is a 1.
Homeland (2011)
I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS SHOW!
WHY AM I RATING THIS SHOW A 10?
I'VE NEVER EVEN SEEN IT!!!
The fact of the matter is I DIDN'T RATE THIS SHOW!
Who gave it a 10 rating for me?
I have no idea.
Careful IMDB.
Leave It to Beaver (1957)
Nothing was ever done better.
I just happened across some Ward Cleaver quotes and they reminded me of what a great show this really was. I enjoyed it as a youngster (same age as Beaver) and found it surprisingly entertaining as an adult. I'm sure the humor I perceived as an adult was entirely different than that as a child. The writing perfectly exemplified the contrasting parent/progeny perspectives. The actors could not have been better cast. Ward's dry sense of humor, June's maternal concern, Eddie's cunning, all the little guys' confusion and misconceptions, the sometimes grudging fraternal affection... there is so much depth here it's almost inconceivable that it is a twenty-something minute sitcom from the 1950s. While I watched and enjoyed a lot tv back then (and still do) I can't think of a better reason to consider that the "golden age of television" than a show like "Leave it to Beaver". It's timeless, classic, funny.

Lodge 49 (2018)
WTF???
This show is crazy! I am confused. It started off a little slow and I wasn't sure if it was going anywhere. I've got the last episode of season 1 to watch still. It not only is going somewhere... it's going EVERYWHERE! I love it. It doesn't get much better than this. If Season 2 doesn't drop off, I may have to consider changing my 9 to a 10. Frank Lloyd Wright said years ago "The continent is tilted, and everything loose rolls into California". This show makes me think of that quote.
Okay, it's a 10! The low rating reviewers just don't get it. That's fine. Their loss. I saw one that said it's a knockoff of "Kevin..." I watched a few episodes and that was a waste of time. Once you get involved with the Lodge and it's strange inhabitants you become a permanent member. While the season 2 finale started wrapping things up, the end started opening new doors. Literally. As I prepared to watch it I saw that the show has been cancelled. Pshaw! Drat! Pheh! I really really hope they get picked up by another network. They just started to scratch the surface and if they get a chance to do some more digging one can't even imagine what quirkiness they could find. Lamar spent 10 years and only got halfway through his quest. We owe it to everyone to follow more than two.

Ozark (2017)
Not interesting enough, unlikeable characters
If you like the "good people doing bad things" genre you might like this. It's getting old for me and, to be honest, these aren't really good people to begin with. Marty was crooked from the outset, the cheating wife knew it and their only compassion is for themselves.
I'm bailing early into the 1st season finale. I see that it's an hour and 20 minutes long and I don't care enough to find out how it ends.
Nothing against any of the actors. They are all really accomplished and deliver fine performances. It's just that there's no one here to root for, so to speak. Just another show with killers and drug dealers and one more dire circumstance after another. I'm tired of rabbit holes.

God Friended Me (2018)
Yeah, a little preachy, sometimes... but, so what.
Maybe we could use a little preachy, sometimes. At least I can watch something with a little optimism for forty something minutes and not have to worry about drug dealers, serial killers and corrupt politicians. (Oh wait, that last one is the news!)
If you liked "Highway to Heaven", "Touched by an Angel", "JANE of Arcadia" or any other shows along those lines you'll like "God friended Me". One thing I enjoy is watching is Brandon Micheal Hall being Joe Morton. He really has mastered many of his "dad's" mannerisms and affectations. I don't know if it's on purpose or subconcious but, there it is... a chip off the old block.

Two Sentence Horror Stories (2017)
Sorry, I wanted to like it, but...
This show isn't very well done. The "twists" are predictable, the acting so so, the scripts lacking and even ridiculous sometimes. "Tutorial" was the last straw. I grew up on shows like "The Alfred Hitchcock Show" and "The Twilight Zone". I realize it's hard to compete with greatness but this show seams like a bunch of kids got together and thought, with their youthful exuberance and inexperience, "Hey! We can do that." Unfortunately, no, you can't. I hate to be negative but, I have to say, a little more artistry and a lot more experience at the craft is required to make this type of storytelling worth watching.

Billions (2016)
Hook, line and sinker... But, alas...
Update:
This show has become quite disappointing and I've lowered my rating. It started out pretty intriguing but (even before Damian Lewis' sad departure) it got to be like watching a pet chasing its own tail. Bringing him back is supposed to rekindle our flagging interest. It's not helping. I've liked Damian Lewis in everything else I've seen him in but, his mugging and snippy retorts aren't worthy of his talent. He reminds me of a cross between Howdy Doody and The Joker in this role. The plot lines are redundant and recirculatory. (Yeah, I think I made one up.) I don't look forward to each episode any more. Oh yeah, the incessant and often arcane pop culture references are exhausting. Too much and not funny anymore.
Original:
They got me. I didn't want to give this a 10 because there are many instances of major deals being done in hours and humungous amounts of money being rounded up or stakes arbitrarily doubled... come on... BUT, I'm half way through the second seaon and I'm doubling up episodes daily (okay, I've done 3 at a time) and they are not the 41 minute hour kind. They are pretty close to the full hour and I have ADD so... there ya go.
Some of the kink is gratuitous I think, yet it does illustrate the insecurities of some pretty powerful people. The behind the scenes string pulling is as frustrating for me as it would be for the unsuspecting characters. It's the intellectual version of the college student going in to the darkened cabin at night. You want to yell "Wait! Don't do it!"
While it employs the basic psychological elements of professional wrestling, and I hate professional wrestling, it uses that same mentality to make you pick sides and forget about rational and impartial analasys of any of the given circumstances. The side you're on doesn't matter anymore. You're there and it is what it is.
A very compelling show and I have to go watch another episode right now. Something BIG is about to happen. Something big is always about to happen.

The Murdoch Mysteries (2004)
More intense, darker than the new series.
Though the main characters are the same, this version is a completely different show from the newer series. I give them both a solid 9 for completely different reasons. After having seen all 3 movies with Outerbridge I was initially disappointed with the new one. After watching a few episodes I realized they were intentionally lighter and reconsidered my opinion.
The movies are rather somber and the seriousness of the subject matter takes a darker turn than the newer rendition. These are quite intense and very compelling. Well done.
