I loved the English language title,Dial D For Demons. The movie? Not so much. The movie starts quite goofy, more like a teen comedy than the movie gets dark, super dark. The tone being kind of all over the place is not uncommon for Hong Kong cinema as a whole. But that is only one problem and as a whole is a hard watch as the storytelling is all over the place and not fluent at all. If you watch until the end, everything is explained and it all makes sense. There is some good stuff here, Jordan Chan is cool and once the film goes full tilt, it does deliver supernatural terror(and when it doesn't) it goes way over the top and is really funny. Some of the CG effects are really bad. But really, the story is good, but the process of putting that story on screen was not done well. Dial D For Demons could have been much better, but also is still a watchable, but very flawed film. I have seen better Asian supernatural horror movies and this one is not very recommended.
This is a really well done Italian styled horror movie out of Hong Kong. This dark and disturbing thriller is really nicely shot with great set design and full of lots of dark atmosphere. Corpse Mania is the story of a necrophiliac murderer of prostitutes that leaves the defiled corpses of these unfortunate women behind. The remains are vomit inducing with decomposing corpses swarming with insects. This is a especially humorless film with outbursts of bloody splatter violence and gruesome gore.. This is savage stuff but cut with diabolical surgical precision..Corpse Mania is the stuff of nightmares and was masterfully done.
Doctor Vampire is another absolutely going for broke, bonkers movie from Hong Kong. It didn't seem right to be a Category III movie as it does not contain much nudity or graphic violence. It is still completely insane and is a vampire comedy that contains nods to Chinese and western vampire films. If you put together A Chinese Ghost Story, My Best Friend Is A Vampire and throw in some slapstick comedy, some baffonery and some really over the top action sequences, you might get an idea..The approach is mostly lighthearted and tongue in cheek, but there are a few serious more dramatic scenes. This tonal changes are common in Hong Kong cinema of its time and it's highly entertaining so it's easy to go with it..The main white/western vampire is really over the top with giant fangs and cape. Plus the man does have some killer kung fu skills. Doctor Vampire is certainly never boring and a great example of what made the Hong Kong cinema as a whole so endearing in its prime.
