Oh, Canada (2024)
A work of art
I watched this at Cannes, at the film's premiere.
OH, CANADA is a highly original film by one of the masters of cinema, a real work of art. The film is beautifully made with a strong visual look. It features beautiful cinematography and great production design. The acting is strong, especially Richard Gere who plays the protagonist. He gives a terrific and memorable performance in the vein of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES- a complicated, not always likable but compelling character.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I think it is one of Paul Schrader's greatest achievements, and a gift to cinema lovers. Recommended.
Pleasantville (1998)
A "pleasant" movie
Pleasantville is a movie worth seeing. It is extremely charming and sweet. It shows how dull our world if it were just black and white. The set design is gorgeous and so is the cinematography. The acting in this movie is superb. This movie definitely should be on the list of to 250 movies. It is very well made. Pleasantville tells the story of a teenage boy (played by Toby Maguire) and his sister (played by Reese Witherspoon) who find a magical remote control and are transported into a black and white '50's sitcom. The town in the show is called Pleasantville. The people of Pleasantville are very limited in terms of life. They have not discovered many things yet, and the town lacks color. But when Bud and Betty (the boy and his sister) teach the people about things they have never experienced or know of before, the town becomes exciting and colorful.
One of the best scenes in the entire film: The best scene is when Bud and Betty go to lovers lane. They are driving in the car as they see the world changing colors. Flower petals turn pink and fall from the trees. It is a gorgeous landscape and extremely pretty.
Another of the greatest scenes is when Bud goes to his "mother" in the kitchen. She is "colored." He takes her gray makeup and paints her face with it to cover up her color. Then, she looks exactly the same as she did before. Her husband can not tell the difference.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
A violinist and composer of opera with a disfigured face lives in an Opera house. He is violent to all except for his lovely "Christine" a sweet soprano whose father died.
This is a beautiful film! The costumes, singing, acting, and set are fabulous! Emma Rossum who plays Christine in the film, is an excellent singer and actress and is great for the role. The tunes of enchanting Andrew Lloyd Webber's music are memorable and sweet. A sad but lovely, musical jam-packed with love, revenge, hate, and action. Suitable for ages (not any younger because of sadness and violence) 9 (with parents)- 100! Gerald Butler who plays the phantom is captivating and wonderful! The man who plays Rolf is great and plays a kind (once a friend but later a.....) lover of Christine. The audience will cry, smile, "awe", and cry again. Be ready for the musical on screen of a lifetime!
