I hate to say this, because I am a huge freddiew fan, but this is blatantly amateur filmmaking. I like that the directors tried to stray from their comfort zone (action) and add emotional depth to their characters, but they obviously don't have a lot of experience doing that. The visual effects weren't really as grand as I was hoping, really nothing much more than the occasional gunfight or explosion. I know there are always more effects than you think, and there was a lot of green-screening and work that went into it, but I was left wanting more. The Law and Games Dean were comedic highlights, and Brian Firenzi is surely a talented actor. I never once liked Brian D throughout the whole series, he was just the worst type of person. Jenni Matrix's character was also unrealistic, and her on again off again relationship with Brian D made no sense. First of all, who would ever like Brian D, and second of all their relationship was so awkward. I was literally cringing every time they were around each other. Although high school relationships are innately awkward at times, this was downright painful to watch. Also, sometimes the camera quality would drop significantly, as if they were using a RED EPIC and then a Canon 550d at random points. They pulled off the whole "VGHS" school part very well, I usually believed they weren't just on a set. Ki, Jimmy, Freddie, and the Drift King were all highlights. Bottom line, they really only successfully pulled off what they were already good at - action and comedy. The freddiew team missed the mark on this one.
So I watched this on it's premiere night as a child, and it had such an effect on me I can't help but remember where I was. It was a dark, crisp, winter night - January 27, 2007, to be exact. The location: Northern Virginia, where my family was visiting another family, who we'd known for many years. Being in their presence had me already amped up, as one of the children was the same age as me, although one was older (actually my sisters age, a perfect match) and one was younger (he tagged along). I had been anxiously awaiting this night, both in anticipation of the Naked Brother's Band Movie and for visiting my friends. Our parents dined on cocktails and hors d'oeuvres underneath are feet, whilst upstairs we snuck into their parent's room to watch what can only be described as a miracle. Ninety minutes later, after a medley of pitch-perfect singing, uncanny comedic timing, and awe-inspiring, Doogie Howser level child acting, I could barely withhold that sweet, salty water from exploding out of my tear ducts. Five years passed, and I grew up, with only faded memories of the "Gift from God" - The Naked Brothers Band. Only a few nights ago, though, I flicked on the ol' Reed Hastings machine, only to discover that this very movie was available to the public for only eight dollars a month. After a swift re-viewing, I realized this movie has, like a fine wine, or a platter of delicate Roquefort cheeses, has only grown better with age. I only wish that the children of today, even the adults of what Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin so eloquently called "Modern Times" , would take an hour and a half out of their day to truly learn, as Sam Keen once said, "how to begin again."
It went too big. Personally there was just something wrong with Nolan's interpretation of the whole dream thing. I got uber bored and i thought most of the stuff was too predictable. People were freaking out saying this was the best film ever and it was mind-blowing and all that jazz. i FELT THERE WERE TO MANY PLOT HOLES AND GOT SICK OF THE FILM ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH. It was truly not even remotely as good as it was made out to be. 1. It wasn't as good as it was supposed to be. 2. I didn't end up liking any of the characters that much. 3. Nolan's fan-boys get on my nerves. 4. I have a friend who obnoxiously is obsessed with Nolan, and that makes me biased. 5. I had higher expectations based on Nolan's previous films.
