Campy but fun
28 October 2024
So far I'm really enjoying this series: Like a Dragon. The characters are charming and they have very interesting dispositions and motivations. The action scenes are fun. The plot and story is pretty interesting albeit simple.

Yes its a bit corny, but much like it's main character, the show has a charisma that can't be denied. It sucks you in and makes you wonder where all of this is going.

The show is based on a game series by Sega. I have played one of the games but I don't know enough about the series as a whole to say whether the show is faithful to the games in story. To me it does capture the essence of what the game was about, but it doesn't seem to follow the story of the game that I played.

The Office (2024– )
6/10
A rehash of a tired formula.
18 October 2024
After seeing the original British Office, and the American Office, for over a decade, it's hard to tell if I've become immune to this formula, or if this rendition is just not all that charming.

It gets off to a slow start, but by episode 4 or 5 you may find yourself chuckling occasionally. The characters are analogous to characters from previous renditions and it really tries hard to stick to the same formula that you've already seen. There does not seem to be much effort into breaking new ground or surprising us with new character archetypes or story lines. Despite being a carbon copy of previous renditions, the players seem to have a bit less charisma than their analogs, and so you'll find yourself not being drawn in like you did when you saw the Office the first time.

To sum up, it's the same Office you've already seen before, being played by new people. The characters. The stories and gags are almost identical to that which you've already seen. There is nothing fresh or new to entice people to watch this. If you simply want more of the same, or you want to turn your brain off and have very few chuckles, it may be worth a watch.

Teacup (2024– )

Dollar Store Lost/From/Walking Dead
10 October 2024
NBC doesn't produce good shows, rather they produce cheap imitations of good shows in a desperate attempt to get you to subscribe to Peacock. Teacup is just the latest in a list of shows that NBC has made to entice you to subscribe to their dogwater tier streaming service.

The show isn't bad as much as it is an uninspired, paint-by-numbers, copy of better shows that we've all seen before. It's intentional, they know you like the shows it emulates and tries to entice you with familiar flavor before you realize it's a knock off. Events transpire which might stand out as interesting, but the audience is acutely aware that the genre is that of teasing intreague from the morbidly strange. If this is your genre, and your audience has seen this before, Teacup needs to come with more in order to keep us hooked. The question is, if you like this, why not just watch the originals that did it better?

I liked this show better when it was called Good Will Hunting
21 September 2024
I like Kaitlin Olson. She does her best to make this work. Watching her is definitely the bright spot in this show.

Ultimately I think this show is a bit too derivative for me to appreciate. I don't think everything has to be original but this just feels like a collage of tropes that I've seen before.

The writing and especially the dialogue is too demonstrative to the point that it feels like the conversations that characters are having is a bit unnatural. Real people wouldn't say those things or talk that way. It feels contrived.

I don't think it's a bad show by any standard, but I don't feel like there is enough here to make me want to watch another espiode.

This is how comic book shows should be
20 September 2024
The show is put together very well. The writing is on point, the dialogue, the acting, it's very grounded. It captivated me from the first scene. Colin Farrell steps into this character and brings him to life and makes us believe it's real.

The city of Gotham feels realistic and gritty like it should. The supporting cast all deliver great performances. At no time is the immersion broken. All other show runners of Superhero/Star Wars/Fantasy shows should sit back and drink it in. This is how it's done.

The only thing I can recommend that could be improved is that characters don't have to say everything. For instance, there is a point that Oz takes Victors license and says: "I'm keeping your ID". He doesn't need to say that. It's more impactful if he just puts it in his pocket. Actions say things better than words sometimes, and there are a few moments in this show where dialogue could be said better with actions.

Buckle up, Betsy... your "Jane Mysteries" is here.
12 September 2024
If you already like Hallmark movies, then you'll probably like this one. For the rest of us it's a big no. The story is predictable. The acting is hammy but fine. It's not a bad movie per se, it's just a movie that knows its audience and I'm not it.

Let's face it, this is for old cat-ladies who are easily entertained. I'm not knocking it. Jodie Sweetin, get your payday on, girl, you earned it. But to those who may want a little bit of critique: Maybe a little bit of subtlety wouldn't be a bad thing. I know you need to play up the emotions, but dial it back just a tiny bit so it's believable. Also, there is no mystery in this mystery. I get why it's simplistic but it's very predictable.

Comedy in the style of shouting and overreacting
10 September 2024
Being a U. S. citizen, I do not understand a lot of what Ahir Shah jokes about in this comedy special because a large portion of it centers around the specifics of the political and social landscape of the United Kingdom.

From the jokes I did understand, it seems like the audience he is performing for is a bit overly enthusiastic because they chuckled a lot at things that seemed only mildly funny.

This being the only performance I have seen of Ahir Shah, makes it seem like his particular brand of humor relies on him shouting and being visually agitated over the things he is saying. It's his outrageous reaction to the things he's saying, which makes it funny, rather than the actual things he's saying, which is really only mildly humorous.

I gave it a chance but it didn't land on me all that well, your milage may vary. If you enjoy boisterous, extremely frenzied reactions then you may enjoy this.

Hot Garbage
10 September 2024
I don't know where to begin. This movie is as dumb as it looks. I honestly do not understand why it was made. What was the market it was intended for? Who was the intended audience? These are questions that need to be answered.

Every once in a while I come back to the idea that Hollywood has the best business potential for money laundering schemes and this film reminds me of why that is. A Corp is set up to make the film, the dirty money slid under the table to the distributor, the distributor buys the film with the dirty money and sends it back to the dirty investors. Now the money is clean. That's the only explanation I can think of why this film exists. Literally nothing else makes sense.

Great action film you can fall asleep to
8 September 2024
High production quality, bland story. Characters are one dimensional, lacking any depth or interesting nuance. Big stars delivering mediocre, mailed in performances. Intense combat scenes but lacking any evidence of violence. Nothing about this movie makes any sense. This film is a product with no intention of pleasing its intended audience.

Who did they think think would like this film? Fans of the game wouldn't like it, it veers too far of course of what appeals to those fans. Kids? I does have a very distinct "Hello fellow kids vibe", so why go with the very old actors? Kids won't identify with grandmas doing cosplay.

It's like the studio started making a game adaptation, and then halfway through they decided they wanted to turn it into a paint by numbers Guardians of the Galaxy, but without the charisma. The humor falls flat. The characters don't come off as endearing or even believable, other than the facade it has nothing to do with the game.

What even is this? Oh Nevermind, nobody cares. Way to waste those millions, Hollywood. Pffft.

The Acolyte (2024)

Not particularly enjoyable
8 September 2024
The series was watchable but not enjoyable enough to justify the time spent watching it. The series suffers from a similar problem that the Obi-Wan series had, in that it had only enough story to be a two-hour film, but was stretched out over 8 weeks. Why? Well, it's pretty obvious that Disney wanted you to keep your D+ subscription for at least 8 weeks to finish it.

This brings me to my second gripe about this $180M production: It's not a compelling reason to subscribe to D+. Congratulations Disney, you got my money for two months, but never again. This brand is in the toilet and it's been circling the drain for a while.

I loved Rogue One and Andor, and I was hoping to get more of that, but what I got was a cheap CW quality show with hit and miss performances and filler. There's so many things that happen in this show simply to stretch the runtime that it's very aggravating. There are two characters (Yord and Jecki) which could have been the same character because they serve the same purpose in the story. The writing is bizarre and bad.

There are obviously two or three stand-out acting performances but the rest of the performances are notably bad. I liked the fight scenes, the sets and the special effects for the most part. The drama/story (which takes up most of the time), is what I didn't like. I liked Andor so much better. Andor had so much more intrigue and plot. The characters behaved with proper motivation and it felt very Star Wars. The Acolyte by comparison had shallow plot, nonsensical character motivations, and it didn't feel very much like Star Wars at all. It's CW with lightsabers.

The show famously got cancelled after one season. Like I mentioned, it's not a good reason to subscribe to D+. If Disney would have been getting the bang for the buck in terms of viewers and subscriptions they would have renewed it. The audience didn't show up, and it's easy to see why. It's just not that good. There are better things to watch on different Networks. Don't waste your time and money.

Pleasantly Surprised
26 August 2024
The show is funny and it keeps you interested in what's going to happen next. Vince Vaughn is as charming as he has ever been and the cast has really good chemistry. The supporting characters do a good job and the types of characters in the show are relatable even though they're over the top.

If you can just sit back and enjoy a funny murder mystery then you may enjoy this one. I don't have much more to say. It's fun, it's unpredictable, it's like Fargo but in the Florida Keys. It has good energy and actors who do their best to entertain you.

Trying to think of something I don't like... the color grading I guess? It's a bit like an Instagram filter. Other than that, it's great.

John Woo Paint by numbers.
24 August 2024
It's not the worst thing you can watch. It has its moments. Every once in a while it wakes up and remembers it's an action movie. The rest of the time it's down wallowing in a rut of character moments that try too hard to convince us that we should care about these characters. Sam Worthington does a terrible Irish accent despite his character having no reason to be Irish.

The action is fun, everything else is boring because despite the effort it's hard to care about these characters and what they're going through. It's Jon Woo without the charm. It can't shake off the wrapper of NBC TV production despite desperately trying.

I liked this movie better when it was called Final Destination
2 August 2024
A forgettable, paint by the numbers, cursed teen horror genre flick. The movie hopes to get audience interest based on the novelty of those who are into Tarot Cards and does the service of including references to astrology and adjacent occult subjects. Other than that, the movie expects you to turn your brain off and enjoy the ridiculous ways the kids die until the remaining figures out how to escape their inevitable death scene. If you're into that, then this movie is for you. If you need more substance then this will be disappointing. Its a carbon copy of the genre films that came before it, with a splash of the Tarot card niche.

Critique that contains *SPOILER*
6 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was OK, but the idea that Val Kilmer's Character can live with a gunshot wound to the chest, over night, in the arctic tundra, crawling a mile back to the cabin is kinda silly. He would have died from loss of blood and hypothermia. Someone didn't quite think that through.

The acting was good. The writing was bland. The suspense was good. It was a good movie for torturing my wife because she hates bugs. I reminded her that she would probably have bad dreams.

I could have done without the political drum beat. I get enough of that nonsense on the news.

Pathology (2008)

Disappointing
15 July 2008
My major problem with this movie was the dialogue. Conversations didn't feel real. At best the dialogue was cliché, at other points it felt like the characters were mindlessly narrating from the cliff notes. For the last 30 minutes it seemed like the writers were juxtaposing the character's dialogue directly from the story outline, to move the plot forward.

The fellow who played Jake Gallo seemed like he thought he was in a theater. Every line he had was delivered like he was in the final scene of an off Broadway production of Clue or in a Shakesperean festival.

This movie tries to shock you with provocative images for the first 45 minutes and tries to assemble some kind of story with the remaining 45. You basically get a horny deathmetal fan's myspace page, followed by a 45 minute movie.

Another predictable murder thriller. Easily forgettable, and not worth a $3 rent. Fleshy scenes. that mix sex with gore. will have you in touch with the necropheliac within... for better or worse. Don't watch this with the wife unless she's kinky (mine's not).

With the actors and plot resources it could have been much better. It was good to see John de Lancie.
