The imagination and interpretation of the mysterious and unknown realm remain stale, formulaic, anthropomorphic, and one - dimensional, leaving much to be desired. I didn't expect it to end up as an action - kung - fu film in the end... Hollywood, with its creative exhaustion, is in decline. It cobbles together elements from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", "Avatar", and "Pacific Rim" to create a hodgepodge. Indeed, one shouldn't expect much innovation from such Hollywood popcorn movies. I just miss the delight brought by the hazy and eerie sense of dread of the giant creature in Gareth Edwards' version of "Godzilla" back then.
I didn't have much hope in the first place, and after watching it, it really lived up to my low expectations. When it comes to the third installment, there's a complete change of the director and the lead actors, and it shoots a prequel, telling the story of what happened on the day when the alien creatures invaded the earth. I originally thought I could see the worldview and origin of these sound - sensitive aliens, why they came to the earth, and how they live, reproduce, and cooperate. But it seems that maybe a pre - prequel of this series has to be made. How about having some big scenes? However, the budget can't be too large either.
It's still the same old routine. It's so boring to watch. How could the director have the nerve to make this? The bickering scenes from the first to the fourth installment have just worn me out. The only part that left a bit of an impression was the airplane scene, but even that was just so - so. After all, Hollywood action choreographers have exhausted every possible idea from space to the ocean floor. It's really difficult to get the audience's adrenaline pumping these days. And the ending, with the villains getting caught and the so - called forgiveness, is all the same old cliché. The crux of the matter is that in this combination of an action movie and a comedy, neither aspect has a single outstanding highlight. That's why it's a failure.
