Cold Mountain (2003)
Follows the book - slight spoiler herein
I thought this was a very good movie. Not a classic, but a good moive nonetheless. I read the book about 4 years ago and loved it. This includes the ending which upset many upon many people. What I liked about the movie was that it followed the book closely. Obviously some characters were left out here and there, but that is acceptable. Also, the acting in this movie was excellent. I think all characters were depicited approrpiately...even the small roles of Phillip S. Hoffman and Natalie Portman.
As far as the ending, why does everyone need to see a happy ending? Does hollywood have that much of a grip on the movie-watching nation?
Remember the Titans (2000)
Watchable...but not great.
Personally, I liked the fact that this was based on a true story. Denzel of course comes through because he's a brilliant actor. The movie plot itself is inspiring. However, there was no real "edge" to this movie. You figured that a movie based in the highly racial turmoil times of America, there would be more edge to this. Instead it was sugar coated by Disney. That is something I cannot forgive. Therefore as my summary states "Watchable, but not great".
5.5 out of 10.
Bounce (2000)
Re-gift it...
This movie was absolutely terrible. Both stars (Paltrow and Affleck) have done much better movies in their careers than Bounce. I only went b/c my girlfriend at the time loves Ben Affleck. Even she was disappointed after watching this film (although I am willing to bet she would give this a 4 just because of Ben). Terrible script and terrible acting. I gave it a 2 b/c the story did have some potential if it was done correctly...which it was not. Do not waste your money renting or buying this. If someone gives this to you as a gift, regift it as at a "secret Santa" or "Gift exhange". That way now one will ever know you actually owned it.
Bittersweet Motel (2000)
Phish fans will love, others will be indifferent
As a huge Phish fan, I obviously loved this movie. It's great to see interviews with the band and to gain their perspectives on things (i.e. How Mike tells Trey he plays too many notes. You can actually see some tension there). As for non-Phish fans, my opinion is that music lovers will appreciate this movie and will like this documentary. Others just won't get it (much like how people feel about Phish's music).
The Cable Guy (1996)
I normally don't like Jim Carrey movies...
but I liked this one. It's a comical movie especially if you go into it with an "I am about to see a Jim Carrey movie" mind-set. Is this an oscar winning thinker film? No. Is it funny and entertaining? Yes. Worth renting or even owning the DVD.
