In the wake of Alien: Romulus comes the Hulu series “Alien: Earth” next year, which is set before the events of all previous movies and brings the franchise to Earth for the first time.

After Bridgerton season 3, audiences are understandably eager to see what awaits in the story's next installment yet the best place to get more historical drama from a similar period and setting is actually a critically acclaimed 2016 BBC series. With its emphasis on social intrigue, romance, and complex relationships, Bridgerton is a compelling melodrama that brings early 19th-century society to life in an engaging and unconventional way. While features like Bridgerton's ingenious use of modern music and seductive tone are difficult to replicate, other aspects of what has made the show such a hit can be found elsewhere.
Even though Bridgerton first stole headlines for its steamy romances and soap opera-style subplots, it's become clear that the show is much more nuanced than many initially gave it credit for. Rather than the salacious surface, the real key to its success is the believable and complicated character dynamics, with relationship arcs spanning...

Peaky Blinders caught the imagination by swerving the unexpected. Creator Steven Knight put the whole thing on a tilt from the start by not setting his gangster drama in London, but in (then) unfashionable Birmingham. He made family leader Tommy Shelby not the eldest but the middle brother. He mad Helen McCrory’s indelible Polly Gray not Tommy’s mother but his aunt. His working class characters weren’t to be pitied, but feared and respected… Nothing, from the contemporary rock music to the interweaving of Romany culture, was quite what period audiences had come to expect.
Knight’s slanted take on historical drama was exemplified at the climax of the Peaky Blinders series one finale, directed by Tom Harper. Now, over a decade later, Harper is coming back to direct the long-discussed Peaky Blinders movie, which starts filming in September 2024 in the West Midlands, after being officially commissioned by...

It's been long awaited and highly anticipated, but the "Peaky Blinders" are officially coming back in movie form. That's right, it's a race to see which gets to six seasons and a movie first: "Community" or the Steven Knight-created British period crime drama.

The show began airing in 2013 and ran for six seasons until 2022. Knight is back to write the screenplay, with Tom Harper, who directed the back half of season 1, helming the feature film.
"It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me," Murphy told Deadline. "It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of 'Peaky Blinders.' This is one for the fans." Meanwhile,...

There’s a lot going on in the world of Alien at the moment. The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. Of course, the main event for 2024 is Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, a brand new big screen movie set between Alien and Aliens!
With so much going on, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Disney is also working on an “Alien” television series, in the works for FX from creator Noah Hawley (“Legion”).
The Alien franchise’s first ever television series is likely to arrive sometime in 2025, set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
FX teases, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”
So what’s the latest on the “Alien” TV series?...

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.
Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”
Produced by Black Water Pictures and Lipsync Productions, the feature shoots in London this April. Winstone and his long-term manager, Michael Wiggs, are also on board as co-producers. The film will mark Waddington’s feature directorial debut.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

The Alien franchise will return with its first ever television series in 2025, and it’s set to be the first story in the franchise that takes place on Earth, roughly 70 years in the future.
Creator Noah Hawley‘s take on the Alien franchise has been described as both an “extension and reinvention” of the films, but don’t expect Ridley Scott’s prequel movies to factor into the series. Scott, who’s on board the FX series as producer, dug into the origins of the Xenomorphs in both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but Hawley reveals in a new chat with Kcrw’s The Business that he’s not interested in playing with any of those story threads.
Furthermore, he’s only interested in exploring the tech of the original two movies.

There is a lot of talk about a potential war, and the police has been asked to haul all vagrants from the streets with a vague explanation that civilians without identity impose a national threat. The men are brought to a local mental clinic where they are sedated and kept for months and then discharged with a bunch of pills, just in time to make space for the new lot. Tovino Tomas plays a man who was put in such an institution for no other reason than leaving his house to do some errands, and running into the wrong kind of uniformed guys. Upon his release, he returns to a settlement made out of old train wagons somewhere in the countryside, in an area impacted by the heavy industry. He discovers a new, not that pleasant type of neighbor living in the wagon opposite of his, but the times are difficult enough,...

The film now in production in Oregon, which has been a passion project for Israelite over the past decade, is inspired by the New Yorker article of the same name by Susan Orlean. This is the story of Kaitlyn (Prince), a 13-year-old girl who, reeling from her parents’ divorce and the pending loss of her home, is drawn into the world of pigeon racing. She hopes to solve her family’s financial woes by stealing a valuable bird, but instead forms a bond with the owner who cultivates her love of the sport.

This year, all the Oscar-contending directors are nominated for original screenplay: the Daniels, Todd Field, Martin McDonagh, Ruben Östlund and Steven Spielberg (writing with Tony Kushner).
This is the first time it’s happened in AMPAS history.
The only year that came close was 2017, when all five helmers had written or co-written their scripts, though they didn’t all get writing noms.
So here’s Film History 101.
In Hollywood lore, Preston Sturges is often credited as the first scribe to become a hyphenate, as writer-director of the 1940 “The Great McGinty.” But as with all Hollywood “facts,” there is only an element of truth here.
In the next few years, he was joined by some heavyweights: Orson Welles (“Citizen Kane”) and John Huston (“The Maltese Falcon”) in 1941; Leo McCarey (co-writer of “Going My Way”); Billy Wilder (writing with Raymond Chandler) for “Double Indemnity” in 1944; and Joseph L. Mankiewicz (“Dragonwyck”), 1946.
However, a writer-director wasn’t an innovation.

Later this year, Ridley Scott will release his David Scarpa-scripted, Joaquin Phoenix-led take on Napoleon Bonaparte for Apple TV+, but he’s not the only major filmmaker mounting a cinematic take on the French military commander’s life and pursuits. After being in development for some time, it looks like an adaptation of Stanley Kubrick’s unproduced Napoleon script is finally moving ahead in the hands of Steven Spielberg.
As revealed at a Berlinale press conference today, The Fabelmans director said the project is in active development with the backing of Stanley Kubrick’s widow Christiane Kubrick and his long-time producer and brother-in-law Jan Harlan. The “large production” will take the form of a seven-part limited series for HBO.

This past year, we've had a lot of discussions about whether Brendan Fraser should have been cast in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" due to him requiring a fat suit to play the role. On the one hand, we are all happy to see Fraser be given a lead role by a major director, which hasn't happened in many years. On the other, it is yet another entry on the long list of roles that should presumably have gone to fat actors but didn't. The likelihood that a central character is explicitly written to be large is already incredibly small, but if all those parts are getting taken by actors who need padding and prosthetics to make themselves appear large, when else are fat actors going to be given opportunities to lead films?
As someone who is indeed fat, I often find myself frustrated by this, but I also understand...

When a young Viesturs Kairiss started to dream about becoming a filmmaker thirty-some-odd years ago, he knew his path wouldn’t be straightforward or easy. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, aspiring Latvian directors would have to travel to Moscow or St. Petersburg to enroll in venerable Soviet film schools. After independence, Kairiss was among the first class of graduates from the newly launched film studies program at the Latvian Academy of Culture, one of many ways in which the small Baltic republic attempted to assert its own identity after half a century of Soviet rule.
“We didn’t have any technique,” Kairiss admits of he and his film school peers, laughing. For his first feature film, “Leaving by the Way” (2001), he enlisted friends for below-the-line work and recruited actors from the local theater school. When the film bowed in the Crystal Globe competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival,...

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...
