Judy Greer has joined the cast of the upcoming ABC comedy pilot “Drop-Off” (working title).
The project, which comes from Lionsgate and ABC Signature, is based on Sharon Horgan’s BAFTA-nominated British format comedy “Motherland” and stars Ellie Kemper as Julia, a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village.
“With the help of new friends Calvin and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time,” the official logline states. “This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief … then realized it’s Sunday.”

“Mindy [Kaling] and I met together on ‘Never Have I Ever,’ where we worked before this,” explains Justin Noble, the co-creator, co-executive producer and co-writer for “The Sex Lives of College Girls” on HBO Max. “Both of us have the same ethos towards comedy, which is cracking a story where there’s characters that have a lot of heart, and a community together, and then just filling it with as many jokes as we can fit. We both come from that network comedy mold, with Mindy from ‘The Mindy Project’ and ‘The Office,’ of course, and I did six years of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ We just like making easy, fun stories that people can laugh at.” We talked to Noble as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel. Exclusive: Deadline has learned that IFC Films has just taken North American rights to The Nowhere Inn from Topic Studios. The pic, a fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity, is produced, written by, and stars Carrie Brownstein and Grammy winner Annie “St. Vincent” Clark. The Nowhere Inn also reps the feature directorial debut of frequent Portlandia collaborator and scribe Bill Benz.
The movie, which made its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, marks the first feature length film in which Clark has simultaneously produced, starred and composed all the original music. A fall 2021 release is currently planned.
The Nowhere Inn is a metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and public persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives.

Comedian Jillian Bell thrives as a wild woman. The pith of her comic persona is a grasping, inelegant id — the kind of needy enfant terrible who undergoes antic slapstick and sour humiliations while the dangling carrot of maturity eludes her. Her characters inevitably leave some manner of destruction in their wake.
After watching Bell hone this half-callow, half-churlish onscreen identity in films and TV series like Rough Night, Brittany Runs a Marathon, Idiotsitter and Workaholics, I was surprised to find her lead role in the Disney+ fantasy flick Godmothered oddly deflated. Exclusive: New Line Cinema is negotiating with Zachary Levi to star in Spy Guys, and it has just set Jeff Tomsic to direct the script by Adam Sztykiel. That puts the action comedy on a fast track as the aim here is to get the movie made before Levi reprises in the Shazam! sequel, which New Line is also percolating.
Tomsic made his directorial debut last year on the New Line comedy Tag, and cut his teeth on the Comedy Central series Broad City and Idiotsitter, on which he is executive producer. Sztykiel’s credits include Rampage and Due Date.
Levi will play a super spy in the vein of Jason Bourne and Ethan Hunt who gets in a jam on an impossible mission and can only rely on the help of his moronic college friends who happen to be with him to work it out.

If you work in television in any capacity, there are over a hundred categories in which you could be nominated for an Emmy, largely in below-the-line capacities. And what we find every year is how often, behind the scenes, the nominees still happen to be heavily male versus female — while certain fields like casting and make-up do lean heavily towards women nominees, there are still many areas where they struggle to be acknowledged.
Below are some (not all) of the shows featuring deserving women who, this year, received important recognition by the Academy for the work that happens behind the scenes, from writing to editing to production design to directing.
“Twin Peaks”

In a gender switch from the original British series, Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street) is set as a lead opposite Ben Schwartz in The Wrong Mans, Showtime’s remake of the UK comedy that was created by and starred James Corden & Matthew Baynton. Chicago – When a real life group of friends keep a thirty year tradition alive, playing a game of “Tag,” there is bound to be a film that shares the same name. Jeff Tomsic makes his director debut with a killer cast… Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress and Jeremy Renner, all still playing that childhood game.
The rules are the game only takes place in the month of May every year, and there are other agreed upon guidelines like no “tag backs.” The kicker is that Jerry (Jeremy Renner) has never been “It.” Yes, in all the years the crew has been playing the game, he’s never been tagged. The other players see an opportunity during Jerry’s wedding weekend, if they can overcome his determination, his bride-to-be (Anabelle Wallis), and the various women in their lives, as portrayed by Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones and Nora Dunn.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV show airing in 2017 that people may have missed this year? This could be a new show that debuted or a returning show that aired a new season this year.

There have actually been two “forgotten” shows in 2017 that I’ve stumped for pretty hard. The first is “Hap and Leonard’s” second season, “Mucho Mojo,” on SundanceTV. This week’s question: What is the best TV show airing in 2017 that people may have missed this year? This could be a new show that debuted or a returning show that aired a new season this year.
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There have actually been two “forgotten” shows in 2017 that I’ve stumped for pretty hard. The first is “Hap and Leonard’s” second season, “Mucho Mojo,” on SundanceTV. It’s nearly a sea change from its first season, as it tells a difficult and complicated racial story that’s balanced with its trademark wit and quirky sensibilities. It’s a tale that isn’t being told anywhere else right now — of neglected neighborhoods,...

Comedy Central’s newest wave of programming has been built around individuals, doubling down on the past achievements of their comedian hosts. Moshe Kasher’s “Problematic” grew out of complex discussions in a public forum. “The Jim Jefferies Show” is an extension of his frequent call-outs of strange behavior both in America and abroad. One of the reasons the network’s newest series, “Hood Adjacent,” works so well is that it comes from host James Davis’ similarly distinct perspective, delivered with fast-paced, sly cultural commentary that’s heavy on laughs.
A blended mix of stand-up, monologue, “Daily Show”-style field pieces, genre parodies and interviews with notable figures, “Hood Adjacent” uses all of these comedic tools to look at different corners of the black experience, in the area of Los Angeles near where Davis was raised and beyond. Though the format approach changes by subject — ranging from food to police...

Comedy Central doesn’t have many scripted series. How will the second season of its Idiotsitters TV show perform in the ratings? Can this new twist on the odd-couple genre retain and grow its audience? Has the channel given up on the show since they're airing the entire season across two Saturday nights? Will Idiotsitters be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.A scripted comedy, Idiotsitter stars Charlotte Newhouse, Jillian Bell, Stephen Root, Elizabeth De Razzo, and Jennifer Elise Cox. The Comedy Central story centers on Billie Brown (Newhouse). She’s a straight-laced, struggling Ivy League grad, who applies for a babysitting job to help her get by. The nanny ad was just a cover, though. Instead of the seven-year-old girl Billie expected to watch, she ends up with Gene Russell (Bell). Gene is an out of control party girl, who is under house arrest in her wealthy...

Well, it almost happened. For a minute, the Pied Piper crew finally seemed to be happy. Champagne was flowing, spirits were high and it looked like this group finally had the financial and creative freedom to fulfill the dreams that their occasionally fearful leader has had all season.
And then, as it always seems to in the world of “Silicon Valley,” the fluffy clouds lifted. It’s another weekly example of how the show continues to dangle a happy future in front of its characters, only to pull it away and show them that the way they wanted to find happiness was an illusion all along (or a virtual reality, if you will).

“Orphan Black” goes into its final season with nothing to prove.
After all, it followed up its rockiest storyline with the Castor clones with an excellent fourth season, it earned universal critical acclaim, and star Tatiana Maslany landed a well-deserved Emmy for her breakout role. That’s not too shabby for a show with a fierce but small viewership. Because of that, the series is free to do exactly what it wants and does so well: let the sestras lead.
With all the clone hijinks and amazing performances by Maslany, it’s sometimes forgotten that “Orphan Black” is one of the most feminist shows on TV, and not just because most of its main characters are female. From the beginning, the show broke down gender stereotypes and featured women in all of the powerful roles, letting them have complex identities independent of their relationship to men.

When Jordan Klepper signed on for a day embedded with a Georgia militia group, he was expecting to find answers to solving the problem of gun violence in America. What he got — at least at first — was a quick workout.
“It’s a fascinating experience to be a fly on the wall of a day of militia training. Something that we didn’t realize is that you forget how long a day it is. We arrived and did calisthenics for the first 30 minutes and it was just guys getting their heart rate going,” Klepper said in an interview with IndieWire.
It’s just one example of how Klepper and a team of writers uncovered some unexpected results over the six months that spent researching America’s complicated relationship to firearms. The result is “Jordan Klepper Solves Guns,” a one-hour special premiering Sunday night on Comedy Central.

“Idiotsitter” is built on a simple concept. Its humor is loud, profane, and easy to understand. The Comedy Central series is captured in classic single-cam fashion, and runs at traditional 22-minute clips (sans commercials).
With only the above in mind, it would be easy to lump Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse’s creation in with a number of other shows matching the above criteria.
But that would be wrong. That would be reductive, 12 episodes in, to the series’ overall impact. That wouldn’t encompass its joyous spirit, addictive charms, or detail-oriented approach to a classic narrative.
That would ignore the fact that “Idiotsitter” is very, very, very funny.
The simple concept Bell and Newhouse execute so well — as writers and actors — is an odd couple pairing. Billie (Newhouse) is a Type-a goodie-two-shoes harboring an inner wild child who doesn’t quite know how to walk yet. Gene (Bell) is a...

“My name is Emmit Stussey. I want to confess.”
“Well, Mr. Stussey, it’s a little too late, but we’ll hear you out.”
No, you didn’t miss an after-credits sequence where Gloria Burgle (Carrie Coon) responded to the corrupt Stussey brother’s abrupt announcement. That’s just what we imagine she’d say, if she was being as honest as we’re about to be.

Today is not only International Women’s Day, but a day when many are choosing to strike for A Day Without Women, an economic protest to remind the nation just how important women’s contributions to society are. And as part of that, IndieWire has assembled a powerful list of shows, all currently streaming online, that would not exist without the brilliant female creators at their center. This is the great TV that happens when women show up. Don’t take it for granted.

There’s a very good chance that you’ll remember comedian and actress Jillian Bell from her memorable fist fight with Jonah Hill in 22 Jump Street or maybe you’ve had a chance to see her Comedy Central show, Idiotsitter.
In the new comedy Fist Fight, Bell raises her comedy game even higher playing guidance counselor Holly, whose interests in meth and underage students doesn’t make her the best advice-giver for Charlie Day’s teacher, who finds himself having to face a fellow teacher played by the much tougher Ice Cube in a lopsided afterschool fight.
Bell really holds her own in scenes with Day and Tracy Morgan (as the school’s equally inappropriate gym teacher), which helps give the movie its rightfully-earned R-rating.
Lrm had a chance to talk with Ms. Bell from the Fist Fight junket a few weeks back.
Lrm: How did you get involved with this?...

10. “Angie Tribeca” (TBS)
Can Rashida Jones and her department of hysterical cops get some love this year? Nancy and Steve Carell’s new TBS comedy skewering the police procedural, “Naked Gun”-style, produced two full seasons, 20 total episodes, and a countless total of cumulative laughs. Absurd humor of such high regard is virtually impossible to do well without becoming repetitive, and “Angie Tribeca” proved itself sustainable in one year by pumping out two perfect seasons. 2016 should be looked at as a banner year for the program, even if it continues to top itself in seasons to come.
9. “Search Party” (TBS)
With episode titles inspired by Nancy Drew mysteries, “Search Party” is a noir-ish nod to the classic plucky sleuthstress, but with an irreverent millennial sensibility. The mesmerizing Alia Shawkat plays Dory, an underemployed post-grad who finds her purpose when she begins to investigate the disappearance of college acquaintance Chantal. With...

25. “Game of Thrones,” “The Winds of Winter”
This was a crucial season for “Game of Thrones” co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who, in their sixth year nurturing this beast into life, had to go off-book for the first time since author George R.R. Martin had been outstripped by the TV series. Although the pair pulled off an epic ninth episode — the signature stunner in seasons past — it was the finale that came together the best this year. The opening sequence alone is worth the price of admission because it certainly brings words like “cinematic” to mind. Set to a gorgeous score by Ramin Djawadi, the scene was deftly shepherded by director Miguel Sapochnik to create an almost sadistic amount of tension as we waited for Cersei’s green revenge to be unleashed. Once the catastrophic event occurred though, that was not the end of the dragon ride for us viewers.

Comedy Central has gotten a lot of deserved press and acclaim (including from me) for Broad City, a stoner female buddy comedy spun off from a web series. But the channel has another stoner female buddy comedy spun off from a web series that's turned out to be a whole lot of fun in its own right: Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse's Idiotsitter, which is in the home stretch of season 2. Newhouse plays Billie, a well-educated but cash-strapped woman at a crossroads, who takes what she thinks is a nanny job for a rich couple's young daughter, but instead involves her playing tutor, chaperone, and friend to the 25-year-old Gene (Bell), a wealthy idiot under house arrest in the mansion of her father Kent (Stephen Root). It's a comedy less notable for the stories than for the off-kilter tone, as the relatively sensible Billie gets sucked deeper and deeper into Gene's ignorant,...

Comedy Central has, over the years, become home to a number of talented comedians and offbeat shows, making their slate always one to look out for. One of their particular skills has been finding talented stars and writers of webseries and giving them a bigger platform, and it is from the latter that their new series Idiotsitter emerges. The brainchild of comedians Charlotte Newhouse and Jillian Bell, the series thrives on strong comedic performances, and shows a lot of potential depending on how well it can navigate the trickiness of its central conceit.
