As per multiple reports, the Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home; Avengers: Endgame) has landed the lead role in Christopher Nolan's next epic movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting in early 2025, with an eye on a prime Summer 2026 release date.
The fan-favorite actor was reportedly at the top of Nolan's wish list for this project and will now co-star with Academy Award-winner Matt Damon (Jason Bourne; Ford v Ferrari), who is set to reunite with Nolan for the third time in his career, after the sci-fi thriller Interstellar and last year's Best Picture winner Oppenheimer.
Plot details on Nolan's latest film are being kept under wraps, but the film is rumored to be an action film and The Hollywood Reporter claims the setting is not present day. However, whether the film is set in the past or in the future remains a mystery.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "The Cellar." Proceed with caution.
"The Cellar" is a slow-burn horror movie. It's more about what's coming than what's happening. When the third act arrives in Brendan Muldowney's ("Pilgrimage") horror film, the story takes a sharp turn into the supernatural and features a rather impressive practical creature. Initially, however, things were meant to get a whole lot weirder for the film's central family that moves into the wrong house.
There were more creatures, for starters. Funny enough, the one creature that does arrive to shake things up? Crew members considered it a letdown on the set. During a...

No two ways about it: April’s a great month for the Criterion Channel, which (among other things; more in a second) adds two recent favorites. We’re thrilled at the SVOD premiere of Hamaguchi’s entrancing Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, our #3 of 2021, and Bruno Dumont’s lacerating France, featuring Léa Seydoux’s finest performance yet.
Ethan Hawke’s Adventures in Moviegoing runs the gamut from Eagle Pennell’s Last Night at the Alamo to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while a 14-film John Ford retro (mostly) skips westerns altogether. And no notes on the Delphine Seyrig retro—multiple by Akerman, Ulrike Ottinger, Duras, a smattering of Buñuel, and Seyrig’s own film Be Pretty and Shut Up! That of all things might be the crown jewl.

The Irish-Belgian co-production, set to begin shooting in Roscommon this month, will star Eoin Macken and Elisha Cuthbert in the main cast. Brendan Muldowney is ready to start shooting his new film, an Irish-Belgian horror entitled The Cellar. The Irish filmmaker, a Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology alumnus, directed several shorts and three features – namely, Savage (2009), Love Eternal (2013) and Pilgrimage (2017) – before embarking on this project. The film, penned by the helmer himself, tells the story of Keira Woods (Elisha Cuthbert), whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country. Keira soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family’s souls forever. Alongside Cuthbert, Eoin Macken is attached in an undisclosed role. On this occasion, Muldowney will reunite with part of his Pilgrimage crew...

One of the best films of 2020 — and the last one I’ll get to see in a theater for who knows how long — Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” (Lionsgate) sees the director once again turning to the American frontier to tell a story about America now. John Magaro and Orion Lee play two men in pioneer-era Oregon who go into business selling fried-dough “oilycakes” to homesick miners, but find themselves in the crosshairs of the plutocrat who owns the territory’s only source of fresh milk. It’s gorgeous, elegaic, witty, and powerful — and you’ll crave some funnel cakes.
Also available: Director James Sweeney, who also wrote and starred, makes an impressive feature debut with “Straight Up” (Strand Releasing), about a gay man whose lack of relationship success drives him to give women one last shot; two siblings try to fulfill their grandmother’s dying wish in...

If you've been paying attention to the recent wave of Irish films you've most likely come across actor Hugh O'Conor at some point. He was the lead in hit comedy The Stag before playing a key support part opposite Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal in period adventure Pilgrimage, to name a pair of recent examples. But outside his acting work O'Conor is a very accomplished photographer and following some directing work in the music video and commercial world he's now applied those skills as he takes the helm with his directorial debut, Metal Heart. A relationship driven comedy revolving around a pair of twin sisters in their final summer before college, it's a beautifully acted and shot film that audiences this side of the world...

Richard Armitage chats to us about his new audio production, Dracula, The Hobbit, his upcoming projects and more...
Just the other month we had the pleasure of chatting to Richard Armitage when he was promoting Pilgrimage, but as luck (and his productivity) would have it, we were given the opportunity for a catch up about his latest voice performance, with the Audible release of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story comes as part of The Monster Collection, a Gothic trilogy which also includes a reading of Frankenstein by Dan Stevens and Dracula by Greg Wise. There’s also ‘an exclusive introduction by Dr. Maria Mellins and Dr. Peter Howell, Senior Lecturers in Gothic literature at St Mary's University, London’ who, strangely enough, are both people I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years – it’s a small world indeed.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Moody, atmospheric, even beautiful in its grimness; a medieval adventure unlike any we’ve seen before, with a sharp attention to psychological and moral realism. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
New Spider-Man Tom Holland stars in an action-adventure with Richard Armitage — of The Hobbit and Hannibal fame, for starters — and Jon Bernthal, who’s in this summer’s hip hit Baby Driver and is about to debut as Marvel’s The Punisher on Netflix. This seems like a no-brainer to market to Hollywood’s supposed core audience of teen boys and young men, so how is it possible that Pilgrimage debuted almost unheralded in a few cinemas in the Us with a simultaneous VOD release, and went straight to the DVD in the UK?

It’s only late April, but it’s already been a big year for Jon Bernthal, who just wrapped production on Netflix’s upcoming Punisher spinoff and is now at New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival, where two new films are making debuts. One is Sweet Virginia, a new thriller with Girls’ Christopher Abbott that was later picked up by IFC Films; the other is the medieval epic Pilgrimage, with Richard Armitage and Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Tom Holland, which hits theaters and On Demand Friday, Aug. 11.
In the latter, the former Walking Dead star plays a mute warrior who seeks peace and redemption as he helps a group of monks make a reluctant pilgrimage through Ireland, an island torn apart by tribal warfare and power-hungry invaders, in order to get a holy relic to Rome.
Perhaps taking Method preparation to an extreme, Bernthal decided he wasn’t going to speak during production of the movie, which...

Tom Holland fans shouldn’t expect the new Spider-Man to make any lighthearted quips in his latest film, in which he plays a taciturn Irish monk. A tale about a group of 13th century monks attempting to transport a holy relic to Rome at the behest of the pope, Pilgrimage alternates long stretches of tedium with ultra-violent sequences that have the feel of medieval torture porn. Its dialogue may be rendered in languages including Gaelic, French and English, but it doesn’t much matter when it features lines on the order of “No one but the pure of heart can touch the...

"A powerful man does not become so without sin." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a second trailer for the indie action thriller Pilgrimage, set in Ireland during the 13th century. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". We already posted the first official trailer for this earlier in the year, but I'm glad to see another one reminding us that this is finally coming out soon. They're obviously playing up Tom Holland from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the entire cast looks great. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Pilgrimage here, to see even more footage from this film.

We chat to Jon Bernthal about his new film, Pilgrimage, as well as The Punisher, Daredevil and more...
Jon Bernthal is a very busy man. In 2017 alone he’s got seven projects listed and you’d be hard pressed not to catch at least one of them, with Pilgrimage just hitting the shelves, Baby Driver currently across cinema screens, and the rather exciting prospect of The Punisher series hitting Netflix in November.
In Pilgrimage Bernthal plays a mute, channelling his performance through an unspoken relationship with a young, naïve monk (Tom Holland) which gives the film its heart and drive, as they set off as part of a group to try and remove a sacred relic from harms’ way. The film is, for the most part, a tense game of cat and mouse with various threats closing in on them from all sides (including an especially nasty...
