Taylor Swift crossed over into pop stardom a few years ago, but she hasn’t forgotten her country music roots. She co-wrote the 2018 Sugarland single “Babe,” is a featured artist on the recording, and appears in the music video (watch it above). Now she’s nominated with Sugarland for Video of the Year at the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards, but can she win? It has been five years since she claimed a competitive prize at the ACMs.
Directed by Anthony Mandler, the “Mad Men”-style video for “Babe” stars Sugarland lead singer Jennifer Nettles as the wife of a businessman (Brandon Routh) and Swift as the secretary having an affair with him until both women ultimately get their hearts broken. No matter how sharp Annie Clark’s tongue, early criticism often focused on her femininity. In 2007, a review praised her “big-girl voice“; in 2009, another mentioned her “small and fragile” vocals; in 2011, she was called “waifishly stunning,” her singing “coquettish.” (Guess the writers’ gender!) And yes, she is stunning, and her voice has carried both raw rage and dulcet adoration with equal skill since her debut as St. Vincent, 2007’s Marry Me. But for a long time, these qualities, and the stereotypes that went with them, dominated her public perception.

“Black Monday” co-creators Jordan Cahan and David Caspe have a storied history of broadcast comedies. When they set out on the new endeavor of 1980s-set stock market crash comedy for premium cabler Showtime they knew they’d have a bit more freedom in style and structure but they didn’t want to completely alter their sensibility just because they could.
“Because the show was set in the ’80s there was all this language used that we find abhorrent now — and rightly so — but there were all these words bantered around…so we had to be very careful who we allowed to say those words,” Cahan said during the Showtime Television Critics Assn. panel for the comedy Thursday. “For example, our villains were allowed to say some of those words, as opposed to…our heroes — even though they had flaws.”

Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson is a step closer to moving from late-night to primetime. His starring vehicle, the single-camera Saving Kenan (form. Saving Larry), has been picked up to pilot by NBC. The project, from SNL creator/executive producer Lorne Michaels and his Broadway Video as well as Superstore executive producer Jackie Clarke, had a big pilot production commitment.
NBC ‘also has ordered to pilot Like Magic, a single-camera workplace comedy from Superstore writers Bridget Kyle and Vicky Luu, Forever co-creator Matt Hubbard, Julie Anne Robinson’s CannyLads Productions and Universal TV, where CannyLads and Hubbard are based.

Outdated and overextended aren’t desirable qualities for stocks or TV shows, but “Black Monday” makes them work to its advantage — for now. Showtime’s new comedy follows a greedy, drug-addicted, morally bankrupt but monetarily flush stock trader whose dangerous play for one company may have caused the worst stock market crash in the history of Wall Street. Despite saying as much right off the bat, David Caspe and Jordan Cahan ask you to root for Don Cheadle’s Maurice “Mo” Monroe anyway, marking yet another TV series mistakenly built on an antihero story (so very out of fashion in 2019) and told at such a rapid rate one wonders how “Black Monday” will sustain interest beyond its first episodes.
But oh what fun lies within these initial 90 minutes. There’s Don Cheadle’s coked-up charm and a robot butler named Kyle; there’s a “Marry Me” reunion with Ken Marino...

The California Film Commission on Monday released a list of 15 projects selected for the state’s Film & TV Tax Credit Program 2.0. “Space Jam 2” starring Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is among the 15 projects set to receive a total of $73.3 million in tax credits reserved for the projects.
Five of the films are indies, and five are also being shot outside of Los Angeles’s 30-Mile Zone, including near San Francisco and Palm Springs. The commission says this represents a growth from previous years as part of an effort to spread production jobs and spending statewide.
“One of the goals for Program 2.0 is to bring production jobs and spending to regions across the state, and we’re beginning to see that happen more often and on a larger scale,” said California Film Commission executive director Amy Lemisch in a statement. “We’re thrilled to see Program 2.0 have such far-reaching benefits.

It has been a few years since Taylor Swift made her formal transition from the world of country to the world of pop, but she’s still loved by the country music community, as evidenced by the fact that she keeps winning Country Music Association Awards. In 2017 she claimed Song of the Year for the very first time for writing “Better Man” for the group Little Big Town. Now in 2018 she’s the front-runner to win again for lending an assist to another artist: Music Video of the Year as a featured artist on Sugarland‘s “Babe.” Watch it above.
Swift wrote this song too along with Train frontman Patrick Monahan. Like “Better Man” it’s a breakup song, and in the music video Swift actually plays the other woman. In the “Mad Men”-style period clip, she’s a homewrecker who steals businessman Brandon Routh from Sugarland lead singer Jennifer Nettles.

The Netfix animated comedy “Big Mouth,” from the beginning, has drawn true comedy greats together for some of the finest voice acting around — any show that can spotlight Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, and Jordan Peele with plenty of room left over for an eclectic guest cast that includes Kristen Bell, Richard Kind, June Diane Raphael and more is to be admired.

A little past the mid-point of the year, two male country stars are leading country sales and consumption charts across the board: Jason Aldean and Kane Brown. According to recent figures from Nielsen Music, Aldean still performs well using country’s traditional sales measuring sticks – physical CDs and downloads – even as those sales appear to be on the decline, while Brown is dominating streaming metrics on his swift rise to stardom. Women, meanwhile, are getting an even smaller slice of the pie.

Showtime has given a 10-episode series order to Black Monday (fka Ball Street), its half-hour Wall Street comedy pilot starring Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall, for premiere in 2019. The series hails from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, Black List writer Jordan Cahan (My Best Friend’s Girl), Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (Preacher) and Sony Pictures TV Studios.
Written by Caspe and Cahan, Black Monday takes us back to October 19, 1987 – aka Black Monday, the worst stock market crash in Wall Street history. To this day, no one knows who caused it — until now. It’s the story of how a group of outsiders took on the blue-blood, old-boys club of Wall Street and ended up crashing the world’s largest financial system, a Lamborghini limousine, Don Henley’s birthday party and the glass ceiling.
“Black Monday is a scathing comic commentary on the excess of the ’80s,” said Showtime president David Nevins said.

Blake Shelton won top honors at the 2018 Cmt Music Awards, held on June 6 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. He won Video of the Year for “I’ll Name the Dogs,” which was the first victory of his career in that category. That song also won him Male Video of the Year, which made him the only artist on Wednesday night with multiple victories. Check out the full list of winners right here.
Shelton previously contended for Video of the Year for “God Gave Me You” (2012), “Boys ‘Round Here” (2014) and “Sangria” (2016), but he hadn’t won that prize until now. He was up against a field of 11 other nominees including Carrie Underwood and Ludacris (“The Champion”), Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton (“Say Something”) and Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line (“Meant to Be”). But those were all collaborations, and no collaboration has won the top prize at the CMTs.
