Dream Theater have detailed a new vinyl box set, Dream Theater Vol. 1, that houses their studio albums released during the 1990s. The 7-lp collection is set to drop on September 27th via Rhino.
The first of three planned box set releases, Vol. 1 charts the prog-metal legends’ most critically lauded decade, the ’90s, picking up after vocalist James Labrie joined the band in 1991.
Spread across seven discs, the box set includes: Images and Words (1992); Awake (1994); Falling Into Infinity (1997); and Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999). They’re housed in a slipcase featuring new artwork from the band’s longtime collaborator Hugh Syme.
The set is a boon for fans who’ve struggled to track down these albums on vinyl over the years, as some had gone out-of-print. Per Rhino’s press release, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 will follow in 2025 and ostensibly collect the band’s output in chronological order,...

We often believe that in the enchanting realm of Hollywood, star power can work like magic, and save any movie from box office catastrophe. But Emma Watson’s 2015 horror mystery Regression proved that even a sprinkle of magical prowess can’t always save the day.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that New Regency was gearing up to go into production on a horror thriller called Psycho Killer, based on a screenplay written by Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker. Gavin Polone, producer of Zombieland and the Walker-scripted 8Mm, was set to direct the film, and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) and Logan Miller (Escape Room) had been cast in lead roles. Filming is now underway, and Deadline has revealed that 6’5″+ former professional wrestler James Preston Rogers has been cast as the title character! He is definitely going to be one intimidating psycho killer.
Campbell is taking on the role of Jane Thorne, a police officer who makes it her mission to take down a serial killer referred to on the news as the ‘Satanic Slasher,’ following the murder of her state trooper husband.

One of the greatest modern posters, in my humble opinion, is Akiko Stehrenberger's striking key art for the American remake of Michael Haneke's Funny Games. In it, we see Naomi Watts, in high-contrast close-up, hair out of place, silent tears streaming down her face: the torture of one of Hollywood's famous stars. The design has been copied in the past, namely for the Alejandro Amenábar’s Regression, a forgettable horror picture with Emma Watson. And it is not just the ladies, consider last years surprise horror hit, and Daniel Kaluuya's tears in this variant poster for Get Out. Even more recently, Emily Blunt's visage sheds a silent tear in the post-apocalytic horror picture, A Quiet Place, which (coincidentally) opens today. So along comes this design, for...

Each year, Forbes comes out with their Most Overpaid and Best Value actors list, and each year I’m a bit mystified by the math. For whatever reason, box office figures are compiled for the last three movies an actor appeared in before June 1, 2017 ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) and are measured against “estimated” salaries to determine the return on investment, but limited release movies don’t count.
So, it’s why Emma Watson winds up as the second most valuable star in Hollywood right, thanks to the Disney behemoth “Beauty & The Beast,” even though her box office disaster “The Circle,” which came shortly thereafter, and you already forgot about, doesn’t factor into the calculations (nor her pre-‘Beauty’ limited release misfires “Regression” and “Colonia“).

2017-05-01T06:31:02-07:00Why Did Emma Watson's 'The Circle' Bomb?
Stardom can be a very perishable commodity at the modern box office.
Over the weekend, the thriller The Circle, starring Emma Watson as a young woman working for a nefarious high-tech company, opened to disheartening $9.3 million from 3,163 theaters.
That's in stark comparison to Watson's other movie still in the marketplace, Disney's blockbuster Beauty and the Beast, the live-action update of the 1991 animated classic that has grossed north of $1.14 billion to date globally. (Watson rose to fame upon playing Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise.)

MaryAnn’s quick take…
Humorless, rote, clichéd, and entirely unsurprising. Antoine Fuqua attempts to recapture old Hollywood magic — and fails — rather than create his own. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): really tired of the remake craze
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Here’s an idea: Take the “original” 1960 version of The Magnificent Seven, about a buncha white guys coming to the aid of poor Mexican villagers, and remake it exactly the same for 2016, and all of a sudden it has a whole anti-anti-immigrant thing going on, an atmosphere that scoffs at the border-based bigotry that is so popular these days.
Here’s an idea: Take inspiration from the actual original Magnificent Seven — 1954’s Seven Samurai — and do a remake set in the not-so-old West of 1940s Japanese internment camps, in which patriotic Japanese-Americans fight back against being treated like traitors and criminals,...

The Toronto International Film Festival is the starting gate for fall acquisitions, but for buyers the greatest challenge isn’t their competitors; it’s a target audience that can’t be roused from their couches. That means indie distributors must amend their strategies — if not rewrite them altogether.
“A movie that tests 75 doesn’t warrant a theatrical release in the current marketplace,” said one indie studio executive. “Filmmakers are going to have to be okay with going to Netflix, and only Netflix.”
To that point, Netflix bought Svod rights to Ana Lily Amirpour’s “The Bad Batch” after its Venice Film Festival premiere — but theatrical remains available as it goes into Tiff. Netflix tends to reserve its theatrical platforms for awards titles. Without streaming rights, “The Bad Batch” would have to find a buyer who’s satisfied with only theatrical and DVD revenue.
That’s especially tough in a market...

Bercot to become the first female director to open San Sebastian.
Emmanuelle Bercot’s 150 Milligrams (La fille de Brest) is to receive its European premiere as the opening film of the 64th San Sebastian film festival (Sept 16-24) - making it the first film directed by a woman to open the festival since its launch in 1952.
Based on Irène Frachon’s autobiographical book Mediator 150mg, the film centres on a doctor who discovered the direct relationship between a drug and a number of suspicious deaths, and sets out to reveal the truth.
Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen) and French actor Benoît Magimel (La Haine) star in the film, which will world premiere at Toronto before going on to play in competition for the Golden Shell at San Sebastian.
It marks the fifth feature from French film-maker Bercot, whose Standing Tall (La Tête haute) opened Cannes last year, where she also won best actress for her role...

Emma Watson’s star power couldn’t help her latest film, “The Colony,” in the UK. According to figures released by the British Film Institute, the drama only made £47, or about $60, in its opening weekend. The numbers came from three cinemas that reported sales figures to the measurement agency Rentrak.
“The Colony” tells the story of Lena (Watson), a young woman who infiltrates Colonia Dignidad, a religious compound that serves as a cult and torture prison for the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, in order to find her boyfriend (Daniel Brühl) who was kidnapped.

For a film that’s nominally a sports movie, there’s something conspicuously absent from “The Phenom”: teammates. Instead, writer-director Noah Buschel carves out the time usually spent on building camaraderie and team-based drama to hone in on a single player. Without that team as the go-to filter to understand this talented-but-struggling pitcher, what follows in “The Phenom” is an atypical meditation on what it means to succeed on stages great and small.
Johnny Simmons stars as Hopper Gibson, a young righthander consigned to a rehab assignment after his lack of control derails a promising career. His team enlists the help of Dr. Mobley (Paul Giamatti), a renowned sports psychologist, to help unlock the mental secret to restoring Hopper to winning ways. While Hopper and Mobley philosophize over the nature of mental blocks, Buschel intersperses scenes from the player’s past family turmoil and struggles as a high school standout.

Recently veteran actress Dale Dickey dropped in to the ol’ Crypt o’ Xiii to give us the lowdown on the upcomin’ thriller Regression!
Famous Monsters. Welcome, Dale! Please, sit for a spell and tell us a little bit about the new film you are in, Regression, and the role you play.
Dale Dickey. At its core, Regression is a suspense thriller set in rural Minnesota dealing with a young girl’s cry of rape by her Father, leading a detective (Ethan Hawke), along with a psychoanalyst and a priest, to uncover the possibility of a satanic cult. Stemming from the mass ‘cult’ hysteria in the 1980s, it questions the use of regression therapy in helping to unravel the mystery. I play Rose Gray, mother of the accused, and grandmother of the victim Angela (Emma Watson). Dealing with poverty and alcoholism and an already vulnerable mental state, she is faced with...

Shock looks at Alejandro Amenabar’s latest film, Regression. It’s not that Alejandro Amenabar’s latest film Regression is a bad movie. It’s just a pointless one. It’s a mystery bereft of any real mystery. It’s a film in which its characters are deeply ingrained in a conspiracy so transparent that the audience quickly detaches from them…

Alejandro Amenábar's Regression, which tackles the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980's, is available on home video and digital on May 10. Amenábar is a talented filmmaker and with a great cast led by Emma Watson, Ethan Hawke and David Thewlis, the movie encapsulates really well the widespread panic that spread like wildfire across North America.

Alejandro Amenábar loves writing about controversial issues and telling stories that no one else may think to tell. This is why his new film Regression, which he wrote and directed, is bound to polarize audiences, as the topic of Satanic ritual abuse is not for the faint of heart. The film follows Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) whose investigation into the rape of a young woman, Angela (Emma Watson) leads him into a much deeper rabbit hole than he could have ever expected.
Amenábar is most famous for his chilling horror film The Others, which starred Nicole Kidman as a mother living in a haunted house. His film The Sea Inside, which starred Javier Bardem as a man who fought for the right of euthanasia, won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2005. Regression falls in line with these past works as it combines the horror genre with the real life terror of abuse.

This Friday, Ethan Hawke stars as Detective Bruce Kenner in Alejandro Amenábar's latest thriller, Regression.
The film follows Kenner as he investigates the rape of a young woman (Emma Watson), which leads him to uncover a trend of satanic cult rituals and abuse. The film also studies a type of psycho-analysis that adds a surreal and complex layer to the mystery at the center of the film, making Kenner's job that much more difficult. It's some pretty intense stuff, with a twist ending that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud.
For this week's quiz, we are looking at detectives on film, similar to the one that Hawke plays in Regression, and including some slightly less serious cases (cough, Ace Ventura, cough). How much do you know about these mystery thrillers and intense cases? Test your knowledge with our quiz below!

An astonishing, even perception-altering experience that represents a startling use of animation to tell a story that no live-action film could tell. I’m “biast” (pro): love Charlie Kaufman’s work
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Here’s a thing about being caught unawares by movies: It doesn’t happen all that often. Obviously. If most movies were surprising, then we wouldn’t be surprised when they are. But most movies are not surprising. Most movies tell same-old stories in same-old ways. But to not know what you’re looking at or why what you’re looking at is being presented to you in such an extraordinary way? To not know where this can possibly go? When that happens, it reminds you why you fell in love with the movies in the first place, and how infrequently that love is genuinely engaged.

"Harry Potter" franchise actress Emma Watson is said to be taking a good year off from acting. In an interview with feminist bell hooks (via News.com.au), the young British star says:
"I'm taking a year away from acting to focus on two things. My own personal development is one. My own personal task is to read a book a week and also to read a book a month as part of my book club. One thing I am going to do that I've been working on for a while is completing my yoga Level 3 meditation for teaching."
Watson recently finished filming "The Circle" with Tom Hanks which opens late this year, and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" which opens early 2017. Her most recent film "Regression" opened in limited release a few weeks ago, but flopped. She also has "Colonia" which scores a limited release in April.

Absurdity turns quickly to boredom in Alejandro Amenábar’s Regression, the latest picture unceremoniously dumped by The Weinstein Company to your local multiplex with excess capacity. Set in a 1990 rural Minnesota, the story follows the adventures of Detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) as he investigates a local “outbreak” of demonic possession that comes across his desk. Enlisting Professor David Rains (David Thewlis), they go on a wild adventure that eventually finds them briefly in Pittsburgh chasing a cult and a dark family secret that, at first glance, is less than what it might have been. Who would have thought a small town police department had those kinds of resources?
Amenábar gets the atmosphere right even if there’s not much lurking in the shadows, all while Hawke does his best to keep a straight face. At the heart of the film is a strong performance by Emma Watson as Angela,...

Kung Fu Panda 3 topped Super Bowl weekend, finishing #1 for a second weekend in a row while the weekend's three newcomers didn't exactly inspire upon release. The Coens' Hail, Caesar! performed as expected, though that isn't saying much, while The Choice ended up topping Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which couldn't even reach $6 million. Meanwhile, the big winner of the weekend is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which crossed $900 million domestically and became only the third film to ever make over $2 billion worldwide. With an estimated $21 million, Kung Fu Panda 3 took home the #1 position for a second weekend in a row. The 49% drop is a bit steeper than expected, but could also have to do with some hesitation with predicting too high a Sunday gross. Nevertheless, with no serious competition arriving until Zootopia on March 4, this one still has a lot of time to rake in a few dollars.

Consider yourself warned: Regression is not a horror movie. Despite the involvement of writer-director Alejandro Amenábar, best known for ghost story The Others, and a marketing campaign that has focused on the Satanic cults and human sacrifices wrapped up in the film’s messy premise, Regression is actually a finger-patronizing parable about the dangers of hypnosis and hysteria – and a largely intolerable one at that.
It all starts out promisingly enough, with committed Minnesota detective Bruce Kenner (Ethan Hawke) investigating the bizarre case of Angela Gray (Emma Watson), a 17-year-old girl who fled her family for the safety of a nearby church after saying she was ritualistically raped and scarred. It doesn’t take long for her father (David Dencik) to admit to molesting her – not because he remembers doing so, but because he is convinced Angela would never lie.
In an attempt to draw out his repressed memories, Kenner...

Extending his working relationship with Fundamental Films, the Chinese production company spearheading Luc Besson’s space odyssey Valerian, Ethan Hawke has inked a deal to headline new thriller 24 Hours to Live.
That’s according to Deadline, after the outlet revealed that news first came to light on the eve of Berlin Film Festival, where Sierra/Affinity intends to handle international sales. Fundamental, on the other hand, are partnering with Thunder Road Pictures to finance and produce the motion picture, appointing second unit director Brian Smrz at the helm in the process.
Zachary Dean is penning the script, working from a treatment first pitched by Ron Mita and Jim McClain. A redemption story at its core, 24 Hours to Live will orbit around an expert assassin (Hawke, we assume) who is literally given a second chance at life after his employer resuscitates him. Living up to the evocative title, Smrz’s thriller...

Oscar hopefuls continue to dominate the specialty space, though counterprogramming is in full swing as some distributors hope to tap awards-weary audiences. Rebecca Hall and Jason Sudeikis star in Tumbledown from Starz Digital. The company is opening the date movie in New York and L.A. before a fairly hefty expansion into about three dozen new markets the following week. TWC is opening Regression with Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson in about a hundred locations Friday, the…...

It's Super Bowl weekend and some segments of the box office are likely to take a bigger hit than others. Last weekend's #1 film, Kung Fu Panda 3, won't be affected as much thanks to it being a family film, but adult-targeted features will be more susceptible. One such film is the new movie from the Coen brothers, Hail, Caesar!, which is hitting theaters alongside the period horror Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and The Choice, which looks to become the lowest grossing opener for a film based on a Nicholas Sparks novel. Overall, the top twelve is looking to finish around $100 million, down $36 million from the same weekend last year, though about $16 million ahead of 2015's Super Bowl weekend. Kung Fu Panda 3 will finish #1 for the second weekend in a row, dropping around 40-44%, bringing in around $23-25 million. Last year, after its $52.1 million opening, Home dropped 48.2% and...

Regression looks like it could actually be a promising film. There’s some good talent involved with it that includes actors Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson. The film was also directed by Alejandro Amenábar, who is the director of the fantastic ghost story The Others. I’m looking forward to seeing Regression regardless of the negative reviews that I’ve seen. There are just a lot of elements in this film that are too interesting for me not to miss it.
The story is based on actual sinister events and set in the 1990s, which was a time when kids were accusing their parents of Satanic ritual abuse. The film centers on a father who is accused by his daughter (Watson) of a crime that he has no memory of committing. Hawke plays the detective investigating it, and David Thewlis plays a psychologist who helps with the case. The story...

Originally scheduled to open last summer, Alejandro Amenábar‘s (The Others) thriller was pushed back to this February. The film, which stars Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, was a promising return to horror for Amenábar — but sadly, it’s been met with an overwhelmingly negative response from critics. Regression opens in theaters this week, and The Weinstein Company has just released another […]

One would not think that a thriller a) starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson and b) helmed by The Others‘ Alejandro Amenábar would be dumped so unceremoniously, yet The Weinstein Company — no strangers to such a tactic, if Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s T.S. Spivet and last week’s Jane Got a Gun are just the most recent evidence — will do such a thing with Regression, which opens in three days and, to my knowledge, still has not had a single press screening scheduled. The picture becomes a bit clearer when one looks at the initial round of reviews, a collection that’s at best complementary and at worst, well, you can imagine. Here, it seems, something didn’t exactly click and a major company wishes to get this thing off its hands already.
