Movies returned significantly throughout 2024, but few studios came as close to bringing the box office to its knees as Disney, with releases like Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3B+), Inside Out 2 ($1.6B+), and the recently released Moana 2 ($404.6M and climbing). That’s a lot of coins for Mickey’s money bin, but could the release of Marc Webb’s Snow White halt the gravy train? Try as they might, promos for Snow White aren’t hitting as hard with fans as Disney would have hoped. Maybe the film lacks anticipation because of Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Rachel Zegler’s political posts, or the terrifying dwarves. Who could say? Disney needs some guaranteed hits if they want to keep the fire stoked, and one franchise that’s always gone well for them is Pirates of the Caribbean. Still, can Pirates succeed without Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow? We might soon find out.

2023 had several great movies to offer audiences in a diverse range of genres, but fans would always remember the year for an iconic clash. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie competed with Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Oppenheimer, making movie-goers go wild with the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

Something similar could have happened the following year when two popular IPs’ sequels were supposed to be released on the same day. Ariana Grande’s Wicked stirred both musical and non-musical lovers and a similar response is expected of its sequel, Wicked Part Two, to be released in November 2025. But its previous release date clashed with Disney’s Zootopia 2 which might have prompted the former’s early release.

Moana‘s sequel has been sitting at a steady 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, something that follows a trend when it comes to sequels. The first Moana film sat at a cozy 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with its sequel facing the drop, as expected.

There has been a lot of discussion about whether Moana as a film needed a sequel or if it was just Disney trying to build another franchise. However, given that the first film was such a big hit, and brought in a lot of money, Disney might be keen on seeing the franchise boom.

Disney is using the hype surrounding Moana 2 to remind us of another Pixar film on the calendar: Elio. Originally due out earlier this year, the movie was pushed back to June 2025. While we've still got a few months to go until its release, Pixar has shared a new teaser trailer that will probably be attached to the previews of Moana 2.

Elio is a comedic misadventure. But perhaps more importantly, it's original idea from Pixar. While Disney continues to pump out sequels, reboots, and live-action remakes of its classics, Elios feels like something fresh, something we haven't seen before. That alone is worth at least giving it some consideration.

The director said during Bill Maher’s YouTube (video) podcast “Club Random” that the original “Toy Story” trilogy is one of the greatest trio of films of all time. According to Tarantino, the franchise overextended with the fourth installment. Well, he’s gonna hate this news: a fifth “Toy Story” was announced earlier this year with original director Andrew Stanton returning to the chair. “Toy Story 5” will center on children who become obsessed with technology; it is slated for a June 19, 2026 release.

Disney’s Frozen 3 has landed a new release date which is a little later than expected… More on the sequel’s delay below.

Earlier this year, Disney announced the studio would be “leaning more” into sequels as it gave an update on its upcoming releases. We can expect sequels to The Incredibles, Zootopia, Moana and Toy Story to appear in cinemas in the next few years.

Frozen 3 was due to appear in cinemas in 2026, but the Mouse House has been forced to delay it by a year. Disney has given Frozen a new release date and we can now expect the animated sequel to hit US cinemas on the 24th November 2027, as reported by Variety. We’d expect the UK release to fall around the same time.

Walt Disney Studios announced several new projects in the works over the weekend at D23 2024 in addition to giving updates on titles it has in the works.

Films that are still in the early stages of development include Toy Story 5, Frozen 3 and Incredibles 3. Other projects further along that received major updates include Tron: Ares, Elio, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Andor Season 2, Ironheart, Daredevil: Born Again and many more.

Still, the cast of Agatha All Along performed a new musical number for the series, which comes out on Disney+ in October. Other highly anticipated films received official titles, and plenty of casting news was released.

Marvel Animation’s showcase includes familiar titles, though new details about each make them more exciting than ever.

Marvel’s X-Men ’97 is one of the studio’s most well-received animated series in recent memory, with fans flocking to social media weekly to share their thoughts, feelings, and theories about the superpowered revival. X-Men ’97 Season 2 is coming, bringing some new mutants along for the ride, including Polaris, Warlock, Lady Deathstrike, Sabertooth, and Apocalypse. The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.

But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.

The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.

“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Inside Out 2 recently became Pixar's highest-grossing movie ever and, riding high from that success, the studio brought plenty of surprises to D23 last night (as we first reported earlier today on Toonado.com).

Pete Docter was on hand to reveal that the studio's first original series Win or Lose will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on December 6.

Here’s some super news sure to leave Pixar fans feeling all powered up: The Incredibles are officially returning. As confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo, Pixar’s first family is heading back to the big screen for a third round of heroism, with the announcement that Incredibles 3 is currently being developed. Brad Bird, who directed 2004’s The Incredibles and 2018’s Incredibles 2, is back on board and beavering away at Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl’s next family adventure.

The reveal came courtesy of Pixar boss Pete Docter, who gave very few details of what’s in store – it sounds like it’s very early days on the film right now, so expect it to be a good few years before it hits the big screen. But it’s real, it’s happening, development is underway, and Pixar has another three-film-plus franchise on its hands, following in the footsteps of Toy Story and Cars.

Just like they did with Comic-Con, the presentation started with a quick sizzle reel teasing some of the footage being doled out during the presentation. Most noteworthy was the fact that it contained tiny snippets of Gal Gadot in character as the Evil Queen in Snow White and a glimpse at Tron Ares (check out more about that movie Here).

At this year’s D23 entertainment showcase, new details were revealed about the upcoming fifth installment of the Toy Story franchise. Fans were given a simple title reveal and the announcement that Woody would be reuniting with the gang.

Following the controversial end of Toy Story 4, Woody left the gang to join his old flame, Bo Peep, after being separated for years. Many were unhappy with this decision as it went against what Woody had been about in the previous three movies — the loyalty a toy has for its owner.

After much speculation about whether or not we would see him appear in this new film, Woody is now back and tackling a new age threat that all toys face: technology.

Pixar took the centerstage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase Panel at D23 on Friday, August 9th, revealing a number of exciting new projects including Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and an Inside Out spin-off series coming to Disney+.

The biggest news of the night may have been the announcement of Toy Story 5, set for release in 2026. The film will be written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who helmed Wall-e, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory. He also wrote the previous Toy Story films, including 2019’s Toy Story 4.

At D23, Stanton spoke about how the Toy Story toys have always tried to be there for their kids. “Their jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what our kids are obsessed with today: electronics.” He then revealed the below concept art, featuring Woody, Buzz, Forky, Jessie, Rex, and others facing their new mortal enemy: a tablet screen.

Pixar Animation Studios’ Chief creative officer, Peter Docter, took the stage tonight at D23 in Anaheim, California. Last year, we learned that "Toy Story 5" would be coming to theaters in 2026, but that was pretty much all we knew about Pixar's sequel to its longest-running and arguably most beloved film franchise. Thankfully, though, Disney and Pixar have revealed some more information about the upcoming follow-up at tonight's D23 Expo panel presentation in Anaheim, and /Film's Jacob Hall was on hand to experience it in person.

Andrew Stanton, the Pixar veteran who directed animated movies like "A Bug's Life," "Finding Nemo," "Wall*E," and "Finding Dory," is officially returning to the studio to write and direct "Toy Story 5." This is a homecoming for him in more ways than one: He's spent the past several years directing live-action TV shows like "Better Call Saul," "3 Body Problem," and more, and Stanton was also one of the credited writers on the original "Toy Story" way back in 1995.

Before Pete Docter left the stage at D23 tonight, he had one final surprise: “Incredibles 3” is coming. The crowd, understandably, went wild.

Brad Bird, the original writer/director of “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2,” is “developing” the project, Pixar said. What his precise role will be when the film goes into production isn’t known at this time.

Instead, Bird is in the middle of making “Ray Gunn,” his ambitious sci-fi detective story for Skydance and Netflix. The “Ray Gunn” script pre-dates “The Iron Giant” and was meant to be produced at Warner Bros. Animation, as a traditionally animated 2D feature. The project was briefly revived at Warner Bros., before Skydance head John Lasseter wooed Bird to the studio. “Ray Gunn” is now CG and is intended for release on Netflix in 2026.

“The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2” are two of the most successful and beloved movies in Pixar’s catalogue.

Pixar’s next installment of the “Toy Story” series is starting to take shape, as it was officially announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday that “Finding Nemo” director Andrew Stanton will write and co-direct the upcoming project hitting theaters in 2026.

Stanton will co-direct with McKenna Jean Harris, who directed the Disney+ animated short “Ciao Alberto” based on the film “Luca.”

Stanton says that in the new film, Woody and the gang will find their jobs to make kids happy facing their toughest challenge yet: electronics. The crowd laughed at a concept art of all the toys looking sadly at a kid gazing a tablet from under the bed covers.

The film’s box office is about $618.8 million domestically and $905.1 million globally. It just started in Japan today, so those numbers are going to go up.

The biggest international market so far has been Mexico, where the film is at $100 million.

We don’t know how much further up the top movie chart “Inside Out 2” will go. It could overtake “The Lion King” or “Jurassic World.” Time will tell.

As first noted by World Of Reel, this is undoubtedly Spielberg’s previously untitled project, vaguely billed by Universal Pictures as a “new original event film.”
