Movies returned significantly throughout 2024, but few studios came as close to bringing the box office to its knees as Disney, with releases like Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3B+), Inside Out 2 ($1.6B+), and the recently released Moana 2 ($404.6M and climbing). That’s a lot of coins for Mickey’s money bin, but could the release of Marc Webb’s Snow White halt the gravy train? Try as they might, promos for Snow White aren’t hitting as hard with fans as Disney would have hoped. Maybe the film lacks anticipation because of Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Rachel Zegler’s political posts, or the terrifying dwarves. Who could say? Disney needs some guaranteed hits if they want to keep the fire stoked, and one franchise that’s always gone well for them is Pirates of the Caribbean. Still, can Pirates succeed without Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow? We might soon find out.

2023 had several great movies to offer audiences in a diverse range of genres, but fans would always remember the year for an iconic clash. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie competed with Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece Oppenheimer, making movie-goers go wild with the Barbenheimer phenomenon.
Something similar could have happened the following year when two popular IPs’ sequels were supposed to be released on the same day. Ariana Grande’s Wicked stirred both musical and non-musical lovers and a similar response is expected of its sequel, Wicked Part Two, to be released in November 2025. But its previous release date clashed with Disney’s Zootopia 2 which might have prompted the former’s early release.

Moana‘s sequel has been sitting at a steady 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, something that follows a trend when it comes to sequels. The first Moana film sat at a cozy 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with its sequel facing the drop, as expected.

There has been a lot of discussion about whether Moana as a film needed a sequel or if it was just Disney trying to build another franchise. However, given that the first film was such a big hit, and brought in a lot of money, Disney might be keen on seeing the franchise boom.

Disney is using the hype surrounding Moana 2 to remind us of another Pixar film on the calendar: Elio. Originally due out earlier this year, the movie was pushed back to June 2025. While we've still got a few months to go until its release, Pixar has shared a new teaser trailer that will probably be attached to the previews of Moana 2.
Elio is a comedic misadventure. But perhaps more importantly, it's original idea from Pixar. While Disney continues to pump out sequels, reboots, and live-action remakes of its classics, Elios feels like something fresh, something we haven't seen before. That alone is worth at least giving it some consideration.
And now check out the trailer, which has already garnered positive feedback.
There's something about Elios that's just so relatable. Perhaps it's the inner child in all of us. He's a space fanatic with an active imagination. Wasn't that all of us at one point?...

It’s fair to say that Inside Out 2 was a colossal hit. Arriving when Pixar arguably needed a big commercial smash, it didn’t just bring in a studio-best box office number – it became the biggest animated film of all time, earning a cool $1.69 billion in cinemas. How that level of success impacts the studio going forward remains to be seen – fans are always cautious that Pixar’s ratio of sequels doesn’t outweigh the original projects with which the studio made its name.
The announcement of Incredibles 3 at D23 – along with updates on Toy Story 5 – might have Pixar fans wary of what comes next. But there are plenty of original works, too, in the upcoming Elio, Hoppers, and serialised streaming show Win Or Lose. “We’re always trying to find a balance,” Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann tells Empire in a major new interview – noting...

If there is one thing that we know about Hollywood it is that they love their sequels and prequels. While there is nothing wrong with it, fans of cinema would really like the studios to focus on new and original stories instead of making cash grabs that use nostalgia to bring in the audience. Now, Jim Caviezel’s The Passion of the Christ has become the latest victim to it all.

Quentin Tarantino thinks “Toy Story 3” is one of the greatest movies ever, which is why he refuses to watch 2019’s “Toy Story 4.” During an interview on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, the Oscar winner suggested that “Toy Story” could’ve been one of the great film trilogies had the animated franchise not continued with a fourth film. A fifth “Toy Story” is now on the way.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino said. “I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s ‘A Fistful of Dollars,’ ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.'”
“It does what no other trilogy has ever been quite able to do,” he continued. “The first movie is terrific, but...

Well, it seems like Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited 10th and final film will not be a “Toy Story” installment.
The director said during Bill Maher’s YouTube (video) podcast “Club Random” that the original “Toy Story” trilogy is one of the greatest trio of films of all time. According to Tarantino, the franchise overextended with the fourth installment. Well, he’s gonna hate this news: a fifth “Toy Story” was announced earlier this year with original director Andrew Stanton returning to the chair. “Toy Story 5” will center on children who become obsessed with technology; it is slated for a June 19, 2026 release.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino told Maher in the below video. “In the case of ‘Toy Story,’ the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Quentin Tarantino doesn’t want to play with Toy Story anymore.
The famed director recently appeared on an episode of the comedy podcast Club Random with Bill Maher, where, among other things, he discussed the difficulties of wrapping up a trilogy in a satisfying manner for the audience. Because of his love for the initial Toy Story trilogy, the Kill Bill helmer said he had “no desire” to view subsequent films.

While Marvel and Lucasfilm had their day at Disney’s recent D23 Expo, there’s an argument to be made that Pixar had some of the biggest flexes at the trade show. The animation studio revealed a new “Incredibles 3” sequel was in the works, revealed their mystery 2023 film as something called “Hoppers” and some new details about “Toy Story 5,” unveiled the inaugural trailer for their first TV series, “Win Or Lose,” and revealed the title for this new “Inside Out” series spin-off called, “Dream Factory.”
Coming off the hit of “Inside Out 2,” which grossed $1.6 billion worldwide and is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024, the highest-earning animation film of all time, and the tenth-highest-grossing movie of all time, Pixar and Docter are already thinking about an “Inside Out 3,” which is expected given the box office bonanza it yielded.

During Disney’s D23 conference earlier this month, the premiere mouse-eared studio shared its plans for multiple animated sequels, including Moana 2, The Incredibles 3, Toy Story 5, Zootopia 2, and Frozen 3. Disney and Pixar fans worldwide hooted and hollered with each announcement. Now Pixar Cco Pete Docter and Disney Animation’s Jennifer Lee have shared more details about the future, including thoughts about approaching an Inside Out 3 and how the studio is developing Frozen 3 and 4 simultaneously.
Speaking with Fandango about the future, Docter says the response to Inside Out 2 blew him away, and studio members are already considering ideas for the franchise’s future. Docter says that rather than assigning someone to work on the potential project, he’s encouraging specific people at the company to pitch ideas for Inside Out 3, saying, “We’re just like, ‘Okay, well, if we were going to do something, what would it be?...

The news of the moment keeps veering between cutbacks and comebacks. Keep your shrink on hold.
Paramount is laying off thousands and closing its TV studio, but Skydance’s David Ellison, its new owner, promises that an important new slate is on its way. Disney is shedding employees as park attendance sags, but also is investing billions in new theme park attractions and even a solid entertainment slate (Bob Iger calls it a “turbocharge”).
Even battle-scarred United Artists with Scott Stuber as its new savior promises yet another comeback after alternate decades of brilliance and disaster.
Given all this, the ongoing drama surrounding Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav seems downright comforting.
I take more than an academic interest in all this since I’ve personally been enmeshed in both ups and downs (the “ups” at ’70s Paramount were more memorable).

Disney’s Frozen 3 has landed a new release date which is a little later than expected… More on the sequel’s delay below.
Earlier this year, Disney announced the studio would be “leaning more” into sequels as it gave an update on its upcoming releases. We can expect sequels to The Incredibles, Zootopia, Moana and Toy Story to appear in cinemas in the next few years.

But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Inside Out 2 recently became Pixar's highest-grossing movie ever and, riding high from that success, the studio brought plenty of surprises to D23 last night (as we first reported earlier today on Toonado.com).
Pete Docter was on hand to reveal that the studio's first original series Win or Lose will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on December 6.
Directed, written and executive produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, and produced by David Lally, the new series reveals what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters - the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick umpire - as they prepare for a championship softball game.
Will Forte lends his voice to the coach and the first teaser and poster have been released.

Back in the day, it used to be, ‘You’ve got a friend in me’. But these days everywhere you look, it’s more like, ‘You’ve got a friend in screens.’ Or so, that’s the gist of Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story 5. During Disney’s D23 Expo panel, Pixar boss Pete Docter hit the stage to give a major update on Buzz, Woody and Jessie’s next big-screen adventure – not only confirming studio legend Andrew Stanton as the director of the film, but unveiling a first piece of concept art too. That image, in the broadest of strokes, indicates what the fifth outing will explore: the notion that kids these days are increasingly more besotted by technology than they are traditional toys.
Speaking on the D23 stage, Stanton confirmed that his Toy Story 5 will tackle “what kids are obsessed with today: electronics”. And the associated art...

Here’s some super news sure to leave Pixar fans feeling all powered up: The Incredibles are officially returning. As confirmed at Disney’s D23 Expo, Pixar’s first family is heading back to the big screen for a third round of heroism, with the announcement that Incredibles 3 is currently being developed. Brad Bird, who directed 2004’s The Incredibles and 2018’s Incredibles 2, is back on board and beavering away at Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl’s next family adventure.
The reveal came courtesy of Pixar boss Pete Docter, who gave very few details of what’s in store – it sounds like it’s very early days on the film right now, so expect it to be a good few years before it hits the big screen. But it’s real, it’s happening, development is underway, and Pixar has another three-film-plus franchise on its hands, following in the footsteps of Toy Story and Cars.

Fresh off of blowing up Hall H at Comic-Con with their announcement that Robert Downey Jr is back in the MCU (playing Doctor Doom) comes D23, the ultimate Disney fan event that just happened in Anaheim. Our man Alex Maidy was on the ground, in the audience, and sent us a blow-by-blow of the presentation, so if you missed it, we’ve got you covered.
Here are the announcements:
The First (Tiny) Peaks at Snow White & Tron: Ares revealed:
Just like they did with Comic-Con, the presentation started with a quick sizzle reel teasing some of the footage being doled out during the presentation. Most noteworthy was the fact that it contained tiny snippets of Gal Gadot in character as the Evil Queen in Snow White and a glimpse at Tron Ares (check out more about that movie Here).

At this year’s D23 entertainment showcase, new details were revealed about the upcoming fifth installment of the Toy Story franchise. Fans were given a simple title reveal and the announcement that Woody would be reuniting with the gang.

Following the controversial end of Toy Story 4, Woody left the gang to join his old flame, Bo Peep, after being separated for years. Many were unhappy with this decision as it went against what Woody had been about in the previous three movies — the loyalty a toy has for its owner.
After much speculation about whether or not we would see him appear in this new film, Woody is now back and tackling a new age threat that all toys face: technology.

Pixar took the centerstage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase Panel at D23 on Friday, August 9th, revealing a number of exciting new projects including Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and an Inside Out spin-off series coming to Disney+.
The biggest news of the night may have been the announcement of Toy Story 5, set for release in 2026. The film will be written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who helmed Wall-e, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory. He also wrote the previous Toy Story films, including 2019’s Toy Story 4.
At D23, Stanton spoke about how the Toy Story toys have always tried to be there for their kids. “Their jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head to head with what our kids are obsessed with today: electronics.” He then revealed the below concept art, featuring Woody, Buzz, Forky, Jessie, Rex, and others facing their new mortal enemy: a tablet screen.

Last year, we learned that "Toy Story 5" would be coming to theaters in 2026, but that was pretty much all we knew about Pixar's sequel to its longest-running and arguably most beloved film franchise. Thankfully, though, Disney and Pixar have revealed some more information about the upcoming follow-up at tonight's D23 Expo panel presentation in Anaheim, and /Film's Jacob Hall was on hand to experience it in person.
Andrew Stanton, the Pixar veteran who directed animated movies like "A Bug's Life," "Finding Nemo," "Wall*E," and "Finding Dory," is officially returning to the studio to write and direct "Toy Story 5." This is a homecoming for him in more ways than one: He's spent the past several years directing live-action TV shows like "Better Call Saul," "3 Body Problem," and more, and Stanton was also one of the credited writers on the original "Toy Story" way back in 1995.

Before Pete Docter left the stage at D23 tonight, he had one final surprise: “Incredibles 3” is coming. The crowd, understandably, went wild.
Brad Bird, the original writer/director of “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2,” is “developing” the project, Pixar said. What his precise role will be when the film goes into production isn’t known at this time.
Instead, Bird is in the middle of making “Ray Gunn,” his ambitious sci-fi detective story for Skydance and Netflix. The “Ray Gunn” script pre-dates “The Iron Giant” and was meant to be produced at Warner Bros. Animation, as a traditionally animated 2D feature. The project was briefly revived at Warner Bros., before Skydance head John Lasseter wooed Bird to the studio. “Ray Gunn” is now CG and is intended for release on Netflix in 2026.
“The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2” are two of the most successful and beloved movies in Pixar’s catalogue.

Pixar’s next installment of the “Toy Story” series is starting to take shape, as it was officially announced at the D23 Expo in Anaheim on Friday that “Finding Nemo” director Andrew Stanton will write and co-direct the upcoming project hitting theaters in 2026.

Stanton says that in the new film, Woody and the gang will find their jobs to make kids happy facing their toughest challenge yet: electronics. The crowd laughed at a concept art of all the toys looking sadly at a kid gazing a tablet from under the bed covers.
Stanton also revealed that there will be an army of Buzz Lightyear toys that are controlled by computers that will make things miserable for everyone.

Every successful animation studio had its own humble beginnings, and Pixar knows how far it has come with the success of its latest project, Inside Out 2. But, before all the movies released after the turn of the century, they took pride in their first feature-length animated film, Toy Story, which opened in theaters in 1995.

Disney is adjusting its schedule, with a Marvel Studios film dated for 2026 disappearing from the lineup. A film project set to debut on July 24, 2026, is no longer on the calendar, though it remains a mystery which project it was. Before you start speculating about the hellish production of Marvel’s Blade, the superhero film starring Mahershala Ali as the Daywalker still holds tight to its November 7, 2025 date.
Also moving on the schedule is the Jesse Eisenberg-directed comedic drama A Real Pain. The upcoming film stars Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd couple’s old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.

“Inside Out 2” has just made the top ten movie list. After hitting a $1.524 billion global box office total, the film is not in the tenth spot for the biggest films of all time.
The film’s box office is about $618.8 million domestically and $905.1 million globally. It just started in Japan today, so those numbers are going to go up.
The biggest international market so far has been Mexico, where the film is at $100 million.
We don’t know how much further up the top movie chart “Inside Out 2” will go. It could overtake “The Lion King” or “Jurassic World.” Time will tell.
Here are the top nine films according to Box Office Mojo. 1 Avatar $2,923,706,026 2009 2 Avengers: Endgame $2,799,439,100 2019 3 Avatar: The Way of Water $2,320,250,281 2022 4 Titanic $2,264,750,694 1997 5 Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens $2,071,310,218 2015 6 Avengers: Infinity War $2,052,415,039 2018 7 Spider-Man: No Way Home $1,922,598,800 2021 8 Jurassic World $1,671,537,444 2015 9 The Lion King $1,663,079,059 2019
Of course, this has not been adjusted for inflation.
The film’s box office is about $618.8 million domestically and $905.1 million globally. It just started in Japan today, so those numbers are going to go up.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘new original event film,’ set for release in May 2026, is called The Dish.
Steven Spielberg’s next film – his first since 2022’s The Fabelmans – is due out in May 2026, and it now looks as though it has a title. During a recent IMAX presentation for investors, a slide showed a string of upcoming releases from various Hollywood studios, and there, sandwiched between the next Avengers film and The Mandalorian And Grogu is a film called The Dish.
As first noted by World Of Reel, this is undoubtedly Spielberg’s previously untitled project, vaguely billed by Universal Pictures as a “new original event film.”
The Dish title also sounds of a piece with the report going around that Spielberg’s cooking up some sort of UFO-themed movie with screenwriter David Koepp. Certainly, the title brings to mind his friend Robert Zemeckis’ terrific 1997 sci-fi film Contact, in which Jodie Foster...

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...

The box office is getting a saving throw, primarily thanks to two animated films. “Despicable Me 4” and “Inside Out 2” are becoming massive juggernauts at the theater. This is giving Hollywood and the movie theater business a much-needed boost.
After this weekend, “Despicable Me 4” is heading towards $500 million globally. It made another $88 million and is now at $437.8 million worldwide.
This also makes the “Despicable Me” / “Minions” franchise the first animated franchise to hit $5 billion globally, so there are big wins there for Illumination.
Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” is still climbing, hitting $1.35 billion globally and making it the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide. It just beat “Frozen” for the spot and is quickly catching up to the “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which holds the number three spot at $1.36 billion.
The first two spots belong to “The Lion King” (2019) at $1.66 billion and “Frozen 2” at $1.45 billion.
