The unscripted market might be beginning to settle after a chaotic few years, but the over-reliance on recommissions needs to end, says Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction boss Eli Holzman.

“We as an industry neglect new ideas at our peril,” said Spt Nonfiction’s President speaking at Content London in the UK. “Every big hit we love today was once a risk for someone. It was a gamble and you have to do that.”

Holzman said the Spt’s biggest hits such as Shark Tank and 90 Day Fiancé were being renewed “at a clip,” but that the same appetite didn’t exist for new shows. He broke down how the trend could impact Sony’s unscripted business model, using an example of when Spt was a “100-series” business (it’s slightly less these days).

“If you looked at those 100 series, 50 were season ones and we didn’t expect most of those to come back.

Fox has changed up its post-Super Bowl plans.

The network will the season three premiere of its game show The Floor after Super Bowl Lix on Feb. 9, giving the Rob Lowe-hosted series the biggest possible U.S. audience to kick off its next installment. The Floor replaces first-year drama Rescue: Hi-Surf, which Fox announced would have the post-Super Bowl showcase when the network unveiled its 2024-25 slate in May.

Rescue: Hi-Surf will likely still get heavy promotion during the Super Bowl (as it did during the World Series), and what the network is billing as “a special episode” of the series is set to run the day after the NFL title game, Feb. 10.

Fox has also set the rest of its midseason debuts. The third season of Animal Control will premiere Jan. 2, pairing with the Denis Leary-led comedy Going Dutch on Thursday nights. Medical drama Doc is set to premiere Jan.

Last week on “Top Chef” in “Goodbye, Wisconsin,” the cheftestants had a tough, open-ended challenge: to create a dish that reflected how they had grown as chefs over the course of the competition. That led to the elimination of Manny Barella, whose dish didn’t really reflect his time on “Top Chef” and whose fish was uncooked. That leaves four competitors vying to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller and Laura Ozyilmaz. With just two episodes left of “Top Chef” season 21, the competition is down to its final four, with one more chef set to be eliminated tonight in “Set Sail” before next week’s grand finale. Miller has been on a roll for the last two weeks of the competition. She won the Quickfire Challenge in episode 11, “Lay It All on the Table,” and episode 12, “Goodbye, Wisconsin.” And she also won the Elimination Challenge in “Wisconsin.

Food Network has renewed “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing” for Season 2 ahead of the new primetime competition’s first season finale.

Hosted by Esther Choi and Michael Symon, “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing” follows 24 talented and fearless chefs who take on 24 food challenges in 24 consecutive, non-stop hours, per Food Network’s description for the series. The winner will be revealed on Sunday’s Season 1 finale episode, when, at the end of the 24 hours, the final competitor remaining is named the last chef standing.

Since “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing” debuted on April 14, Food Network says the show has reached an audience of more than 10 million across the linear cable channel and viewership on Max and Discovery+, both streaming platforms owned by Food Network parent Warner Bros. Discovery.

In this week’s episode of the cooking competition, titled “Sausage Race,” French cheftestant Kevin D’Andrea undertook the rice dish that has crushed the hopes of competitors in the past. So what happened in episode seven, “Sausage Race”?

“It feels weird not having Rasika here,” says Danny, who has found a new running buddy in Savannah. Rasika was sent home last week in a result that was pretty shocking because she and fellow bottom chef Michelle have been two of the strongest, most consistent chefs of the entire competition thus far. “I felt like I was going home,” Michelle admits. Being in the bottom is “a kick in the ass.

“Chaos cooking is a thing that I think I’m still wrapping my brain around,” says Kristen Kish to “Top Chef” All-Star Marcel Vigneron in the latest episode of her after show “The Dish with Kish.” Vigneron defines it as “a blatant disregard for all the rules, and it’s specifically up to the chef to do whatever they want. There were two challenges in this week’s “Chaos Cuisine” episode of “Top Chef,” but in both cases cakes were among the best dishes. Michelle Wallace won the Quickfire Challenge, which was to make a dessert highlighting dairy; her dish was a corn cake with mascarpone cheese, lemon zest and basil cream. Then Dan Jacobs was one of the top four chefs in the chaos cuisine Elimination Challenge with his seafood-topped funnel cake.

Charly Pierre was eliminated from “Top Chef” last week in “Supper Club,” leaving nine cheftestants on the main show competing for a chance to win a feature in Food and Wine magazine; an appearance at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colorado; and $250,000 in prize money: Manny Barella, Kevin D’Andrea, Danny Garcia, Dan Jacobs, Savannah Miller, Laura Ozyilmaz, Amanda Turner, Rasika Venkatesa and Michelle Wallace. Except no, there weren’t just nine chefs left in the competition. This week not one, but two entered the show from “Last Chance Kitchen.”

So what happened in “Top Chef” season 21, episode six, “Chaos Cuisine,” when the size of the cast actually grew?

The episode begins with some “power bottom training” in the gym with Manny and Kevin, who have become close over the course of the season, bonded over exercise much like Danny and Rasika, but also bonded over their struggles in the competition.

Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse has some new investors.

The company, which includes production companies including Campfire and Spoke Studios as well as partnerships with Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot and David Chang’s Majordomo Media, has secured investment from Alignment Growth, the investment vehicle from Jeff Bewkes and Kevin Tsujihara.

Alignment Growth, which raised $360M to put into media and entertainment companies last year, has taken a minority stake in Wheelhouse.

The investment will allow Wheelhouse to make acquisitions and attract talent. It marks Wheelhouse’s first outside capital raise since Mongtomery, who sold 80% of Pawn Stars producer Leftfield Entertainment to ITV for $360M in 2014, founded in 2018.

Bewkes, who was formerly CEO and Chairman of the Board at Time Warner, will join Wheelhouse’s Board of Directors.
