Anora

Sean Baker's Anora is a bold, unfiltered look at a young woman navigating a world that only values her for what she can offer, never for who she truly is. Mikey Madison gives a powerhouse performance, embodying a character so desperate for love that she mistakes physical intimacy for emotional connection. It's raw, painful, and at times, difficult to watch.

That being said, nearly 70% of the film feels like a slow burn that doesn't entirely justify its length. The story meanders, often testing the viewer's patience. However, the last 30 minutes are where Anora finds its purpose. The final five minutes, in particular, are devastatingly brilliant showing that Anora is a broken girl who has never truly understood how to give, receive, or even recognize real love. It's a masterstroke of storytelling that makes the entire journey worth it.

One of the most poignant aspects of the film is Yura Borisov's portrayal of Igor. With barely any words, he becomes the film's quiet savior, the one element that gives the story weight and meaning. His performance is subtle but deeply impactful, and it's so amazing that he is being recognized with an academy award nomination.

While Anora could have trimmed its runtime and tightened its focus, its ending cements it as a powerful and haunting experience. It may take time to get there, but when it does, it leaves an unforgettable mark.
