Justice League: Warworld’s Butch Lukic Discussed Why The Animated Film Became Rated-r

During an interview with Screen Rant, executive producer Butch Lukic talked about Justice League: Warworld and how its rating came to be.

“It’s mostly rated R because of the violence. There’s a lot of bloodletting, sword-fighting, and gunfights. The violence, and then the R rating’s coming from that.

One of DC’s most popular and successful animated series was Justice League: The Animated Series that aired on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2004. Based on the Justice League of America comics, the show which was a sequel to the Batman and Superman animated series, reached out to a wide audience who turned into hardcore buffs on the franchise.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of the animated series was the various interesting trivia and facts that it carried with regard to DC storylines and its tributes to actors who played cult DC characters. Though they've made a fraction of the box office of even the worst DC live-action movie, creatively the crown jewel of DC Comics adaptations lies in their animated movies. It's through animation that the potential of comic book adaptations really shines. Ever since "Superman: Doomsday" was released in 2007, we've had movies that faithfully adapt popular comics storylines (rather than just borrow the name for brand recognition and throw the rest away), original films with wild concepts, and even movies that build on continuity like the biggest cinematic universes.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One is, the first part of a trilogy adapting one of the major milestones in the history of DC Comics and ending the “Tomorrowverse” series of movies. For those unfamiliar with it, Crisis on Infinite Earths was a comic book crossover original published from 1985 to 1986 as a 12-issue limited series, with events spilling over into other comics. It was written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Pérez, to whom this adaptation is dedicated. It has since been reprinted in other formats including a graphic novel and as part of TV’s “Arrowverse” in 2019.

Touted to run for an impressive 93 minutes, it becomes the longest film in the Tomorrowverse series. That means it’s offering fans 1 hour and 33 minutes of captivating content, a record for DC’s Tomorrowverse movies.

Starting with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2020, the Tomorrowverse has given us many memorable titles. The San Diego Comic Con has become a hotbed for reveals of many panels such as ‘The Continental’, ‘Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match’ and most recently, a new ‘Watchmen’ animated movie which was announced by DC and is slated for a 2024 release.

The reveal was made after a screening of ‘Justice League: Warworld’ where DC went on to reveal that next year will see the release of a new ‘Watchmen’ adaptation along with ‘Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths’.

Director Zack Snyder back in 2009 had done an adaptation of the graphic novel in a live action movie which was followed by a 2019 sequel series.

An animated ‘Watchmen’ movie was announced in 2017 and now DC has revealed the new logo for the upcoming film.

Discovery Home Entertainment is bringing four animated films to the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, with world premieres set for The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, Justice League: Warworld, and Babylon 5: The Road Home. Wbdhe will also present a panel for Metalocalypse: Army of the Doomstar complete with clips and special guests.

Comic-Con takes place at the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding Gaslamp District. This year’s Con kicks off on preview night, July 19, and runs through July 23.
