Lost Soulz poetically and originally captures today's young people in one of the most sensitive and authentic ways I've seen in cinema. The film follows the character Sol, acted by a true discovery Sauve Sidle, as he confronts his dreams head on and finds joy and pain in equal measure. The film truthfully conveys the feeling of being youthful and excited for novel experiences while also showing the alienation and loneliness that comes from having a difficult home situation and an unstable life. Sol navigates going on tour with a sensitive group of talented musicians as he discovers he's maybe exactly who he thought he could be. Life has a way of gnawing at the soul when one gets too ahead of oneself. Sol realizes that the infectious nature of novelty is fleeting when faced with unresolved guilt he has over leaving behind his friend and surrogate family back home.
The film uses cell phone video, super 8, and mixed media in a way that feels scrapbookish and tactile. Rather than feel scrappy, the film feels incredibly heartfelt and made with a unique physical touch and texture that's sorely lacking in films today. This is a filmmaker to watch with a cast of musicians that are making better music than what's heard on the radio and billboard today. It gives me hope for the future.
