There are sports dramas, and then there’s Friday Night Lights.

While All American and other series have explored the heightened drama that unfolds on the gridiron and in the locker room, no show in modern history has consistently done so with as much heart as Fnl.

ESPN columnist Bill Simmons once hailed it as “the greatest sports-related show ever made.” Many critics would add that the contest is not a particularly close one.

Last month, Variety reported that Universal was developing a reboot of the beloved series, which ran from 2006-2011.

Now, the news has been confirmed, and the spinoff has been picked up by Peacock.

Surely some fans are excited about the prospect of returning to the world of Texas high school football.

But the prevailing mood at the moment is one of utter confusion.

And the question on the minds of many Fnl devotees is simply: Why?...

Last season, NBC aired 15 scripted series and, for one reason or another, only nine of them are expected to return this season -- and five of them are produced by Dick Wolf. How many NBC shows will be cancelled or renewed by the end of the 2024-25 TV season? Stay tuned.

The second season of Accused was quite the experience.

The anticipated series returned with a studded and shortened season. While it made do with its eight episodes and strong cast, the overall conclusion is that the sophomore season was underwhelming and inconsistent.

It didn’t meet the same standards as the first season. But let’s get into all of that with our Accused Season 2 Report Card.

Jacob had a patient who he was quickly trying to discharge due to a bet with Van. However, he soon realized that there was something odd going on. His patient’s voice kept changing, and this patient said that it would happen if he talked a lot.

When the patient’s eye drooped, Jacob realized that he needed to diagnose this patient. That diagnosis was myasthenia gravis. Is it a real condition, though? Just like others you haven’t heard of, you can betcha that this is a real condition!

The episode itself was nicely split across three storylines. We got to see the interns at work as they decided to race each other to discharging their patients, and we got to see Wolf and Nichols figure out how to deal with their relationship when their medical opinions differ. Most importantly, we got some closure for Pierce’s storyline.

It’s going to be a long, anxiety-filled Brilliant Minds hiatus for Drs. Jacob Nash and Van Markus, along with all other fans of Dr. Ericka Kinney.

In the final moments of the NBC medical drama’s fall finale Monday, Ericka got stuck in an elevator at her apartment building. Unlike the older man and other woman in the car, she didn’t panic when the elevator stopped working — but her expression quickly turned to one of worry as the premises started to shake.

The medical cases and relationships on Brilliant Minds tied up loose ends as the first season comes closer to its end.

Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 11 seemed to tie up Carol’s connection to Alison and her marital issues with Morris. Dr. Wolf and Dr. Nichols disagreed about whether an old patient of Wolf’s should have brain surgery to remove his Tourette’s tics.

Also, Van and Jacob’s competition over Ericka intensified, and she hated feeling like a pawn in a chess game.

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode 10 ended with Dr. Carol Pierce (Tamberla Perry) discovering Alison unconscious in her apartment. Episode 11, “The Other Woman,” opens with Alison rushed to the hospital, still unconscious and vomiting. Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) glances knowingly at Carol, realizing the gravity of the situation.

Privately, Carol can’t believe Alison might be her one patient to die by suicide. She was only treating her to get more details on Morris’ infidelity and confesses she both envied and hated her. Oliver insists Carol isn’t at fault; Alison is a sick woman. Carol knows this is a huge ethical lapse, but Oliver thinks they should concentrate on keeping Alison alive for now.

There are still episodes of our favorite TV shows on tonight, Monday, Dec. 9. However, many networks are opting for seasonal content now that shows are off the air.

The 911: Lone Star midseason finale aired last Monday. That means we’re into the winter break, and Fox and The CW have some specials airing tonight. One show is going to be good fun, especially if you want to see the likes of Anthony Anderson and Taye Diggs on your screen.

Meanwhile, some networks still have new episodes of top shows. There’s also some sports to check out.

A group of the industry’s top executives and creatives gathered at NeueHouse Hollywood for the Hollywood Chamber’s 2024 Entertainment Industry Breakfast on Dec. 5, presented by Variety, to look at “Driving a Path Forward” in the anxious aftermath of recent strikes and historically low records of production in Los Angeles.

Paul Audley, president of the nonprofit group FilmLA, presented research about disruptive trends in the industry and the opportunity for California to provide more tax credit incentives to boost local production. From a 2023 scripted content study, he cited that while industry output is declining all around the world, it is declining at even faster rates in L.A.

“We were honored to be present when Governor Newsom proposed expanding the tax credit here to $750 million a year,” Audley remarked. “[But] there’s a lot of work ahead to see that proposal become reality … There are already grassroots and professional efforts forming to have much needed conversations.

Let’s keep it as real as these characters we’re about to break down: flawed characters are fun.

A series isn’t much fun if it doesn’t have a flawed character who somehow resonates with the audience, whether they lean more dark or are a burst of light. Characters who recognize and embrace their flaws are some of the most compelling to watch.

And we couldn’t resist breaking down some of the characters who fit the bill.

We’ve all struggled with physical or emotional pain, and Brilliant Minds excels at choosing cases we relate to.

Brilliant Minds Season 1 Episode 10 introduces us to two patients on the opposite end of the pain spectrum. Finn Kemp was a 10-year-old autistic boy who didn’t feel pain, while Katie, a paramedic, felt too much pain.

Two action-packed cases would have been typically enough, but viewers barely had time to breathe in this episode. It also included many examples of emotional pain and relationship drama.

Besides the case, the biggest draw was watching how Dr. Wolf and Carol have always been there for each other. We even saw flashbacks of them in college.

Both cases affected the interns and their relationships, too, so let’s begin.

Adrenaline surges have to end sometime, so it’s fortuitous that an ailing Emt’s coping mechanisms grind to a halt just as the ambulance she works on rolls up to Bronx General in this week’s Brilliant Minds.

Katie, the first responder in question, is played by Mishel Prada (Riverdale, Vida). After she collapses in the ambulance bay, Dr. Wolf and his team struggle to figure out why the otherwise healthy young med tech is suddenly so catastrophically ill. The pieces are quickly clicking into place as 9-1-1: Lone Star comes closer to its swan song.

This wasn’t just any patient. Gabriel is an amazing artist, and without being able to see color, he can’t paint. Yet, he has an art exhibition coming up.

I hate to say this, but Law & Order: Svu is falling far short this season.

This has been my favorite show for decades. It’s the show that inspired me to write my own stories for and about survivors.

But this season, something is missing from Law & Order: Svu despite the fuller cast and some episodes that are worth a second look.

Contrary to showrunner David Graziano’s promise, Law & Order: Svu has not gone back to basics, and that’s what’s most disappointing about it.

If he hadn’t made that promise, maybe I’d be more positive about this season. The stories aren’t bad, for the most part, and the new character is enjoyable — when she’s actually featured.
