The ten-episode series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (read our review Here) was such a huge success for the Netflix streaming service back in 2022 that Netflix ordered two more seasons of the show from its creators, Ian Brennan and American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was recently released, and has had quite an impact on the real lives of the title characters… and right before that season premiered in September, it was announced that Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam had signed on to play murderer and graverobber Ed Gein in Monster season 3. As it turns out, Monster season 3 (which is apparently called The Original Monster) is expected to reach Netflix by the end of 2025 – and industry scooper The InSneider reports that singer / TikTok celebrity Addison Rae (Thanksgiving) and Suzanna Son are the latest additions to the cast. Although the genre has been booming within the past decade, “elevated horror” has failed to craft any memorable slasher icons that could feasibly stand alongside Michael Myers of “Halloween,” Freddie Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” or Leatherface of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” That’s not to say that there have not been successful horror franchises, as sagas like “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” have been successful in retaining their quality. It’s perhaps the drive for more seriously minded horror films in the vein of “Get Out” or “Hereditary” that has made the slasher subgenre feel less relevant; there’s only so much social satire that can be pulled off in a story about a masked serial killer mowing down innocent people.

When renewing Monster for a third season last October, Netflix’s official release did not include any mention of when the next season would arrive which made many fans think there could again be a two-year gap between seasons; however, it seems that will not be the case.
In a letter to its shareholders released on Jan. 21, Netflix included many forward-looking statements including a look at the year ahead in which they promised to deliver an amazing slate for members. The letter not only touted many previously confirmed titles coming this year including new seasons of Wednesday, Stranger Things, Squid Game, and You, but also confirmed the next installment of Ryan Murphy’s Monster is also among the shows set to be released in 2025.
That’s right, Monster season 3 is slated to be released in 2025!

The Soul Eater
What at first seems like a routine investigation into a brutal killing spirals into something much darker in French thriller The Soul Eater, the seventh film made by the directing team of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. It’s a film which premièred at Fantasia 2024 and which opens in US cinemas this week. The directors and I previously spoke back in 2017 when they made Leatherface, and their work has evolved a good deal since then, so it was nice to catch up and discuss their process this time around.
“For us it was really like trying a new subgenre that we never tried before,” says Julien. “It's a dark thriller, and it's the first time that we told that kind of story. In the beginning it was a French novel, and so it was also the first time for us that we adapted a pre-existing...

Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) was more than just a horror film; it was a cinematic primal scream that reverberated across post-Vietnam America’s culture. Hooper’s film, released amid a decade when mid-century America’s glossy optimism had given way to disillusionment, depicted a world that felt literally slaughtered.
A new kind of horror was born due to the movie’s dirty atmosphere and unrelenting tension; it didn’t rely on supernatural specters or gothic castles but rather on the terrifyingly banal. Its villains were not Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster, but rather a family of blue-collar sadists who lived in the decaying carcass of the American Dream. Fifty years later, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is still a genre-defining classic and a frightening reminder of the cultural decay it depicts.
It’s appropriate, then, that Alexandre O. Philippe’s Chain Reactions (2024) isn’t concerned with...

"If you hear the whispers in his forest, he's come to eat your soul." Dark Sky Films has revealed an official trailer for The Soul Eater, a new horror thriller film from the acclaimed French horror filmmakers Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo. This first premiered at the 2024 Rotterdam Film Festival earlier this year, with stops at other genre film festivals throughout 2024. From the two creators of Inside (2007), The Deep House, and Leatherface. When violent and gruesome deaths starts plaguing a small mountain village, an old legend about a malevolent creature resurfaces. Based on the French novel of the same name (Le Mangeur d’âmes) written by Alexis Laipsker. Who is "The Soul Eater" coming for next? The French horror film stars Emmanuel Lanzi, Malik Zidi, Paul Hamy, Sandrine Bonnaire, and Virginie Ledoyen. This trailer is for the English dubbed version - which will be added to its release in the US this fall.

One of the things I’m most proud of doing here in the horror world is co-creating the “Horror Buddies” with Horror Decor, inspired by the WWF “Wrestling Buddies” of my youth. Along with artist Matt Ryan, we launched the popular line way back in 2013 with icons including Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, but all good things inevitably come to an end.
Eleven years after we originally launched the line, Horror Decor has announced this month that they’re officially discontinuing the “Horror Buddies” line at the end of this year.
The company explains, “We have always tried to come up with something new and exciting that no one else was making. Unfortunately, there are now a lot of other companies doing something similar. Horror Buddies are expensive and time consuming for us to produce as we make them all by hand. While it’s been a good run, the...

The severe violent nature of professional wrestling has always mesmerized audiences worldwide. There are not many differences between those who lust horror and those who desire wrestling. It’s our primal urges that make us want to watch the forbidden. Now, most of us would never want to watch a murder or a real life tragedy, but if we know in the back of our heads that it’s not real, it makes it acceptable.
When horror fans watched Leatherface terrorize teenagers in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Michael Myers stalk babysitters in Halloween, they suspended disbelief for two hours to satisfy that need to see gore and violence. When the movie is over, most people go home and live a somewhat normal life. The same can be said about the professional wrestling fan.
When you go to a professional wrestling event, you know the athletes are not really trying to hurt each other.

The latest film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise – a movie simply titled Texas Chainsaw Massacre – was released through the Netflix streaming service back in February of 2022, and it appeared to do well at the time. It was the second most viewed movie on the service during the February 14 to February 20 time period – which only covered its first three days of release. In those three days, Netflix subscribers streamed the film for a total of 29.18 million hours. Texas Chainsaw Massacre also ranked in the top 10 in 94 countries, reaching #1 on the daily lists in the United States, Bolivia, Brazil, Honduras, Oman, Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. We’re still waiting to hear how and when the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is going to follow up that success – but while we wait to hear what Leatherface is going to do next, the film’s director David Blue Garcia has signed on to direct...

In an epic horror franchise comic book crossover, the father of Jason Voorhees managed to make his Friday the 13th debut without anyone noticing. One longstanding question on every Friday the 13th fan's mind has been this: what happened to Jason's father? Jason's mother, Pamela, has a domineering presence throughout the franchise, even after she dies, yet his father barely gets mentioned.
Jason vs. Leatherface #2 written by Nancy Collins, with art by David Imhoff finally provided an answer, as Elias, the father of Jason Voorhees, makes his debut. While the exact place in continuity of this crossover is questionable especially when it misnames Jason's mother as "Doris" it's the closest fans get to canonizing Elias Voorhees.
At the very least, the character's role in the crossover provides some additional context for how he might appear in future Friday the 13th film installments.

We have been getting a lot of prequels in recent years. Some have turned out well, like Furiosa, Orphan: First Kill, Prey, and Pearl. Sometimes they don’t turn out very well, like Leatherface, and sometimes they can be quite divisive, like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Good or bad, prequels are here to stay, so we have put together a list of Horror Prequels We Want to See.

Jason Voorhees' most epic battle in Friday the 13th history saw him fighting himself, and I loved every minute of it. There have been a surprising number of crossovers featuring the iconic hockey mask killer over the years. From The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Leatherface or A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger, Jason has made his mark in horror history as one of the deadliest brutes in the genre. However, the battle that I never expected to see features Jason fighting himself, and it's now one of my favorite Friday the 13th stories.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies have been a cornerstone of horror cinema since Tobe Hooper's groundbreaking original in 1974. Over the decades, the series has evolved, but one constant has remained: the brutal, often shocking kills that have become somewhat of a trademark, fitting as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was inspired by a true story. From the iconic Leatherface to the various incarnations of his twisted family, the franchise has continually pushed the boundaries of violence in horror.
Since its inception, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise spawned numerous sequels, remakes, and reboots, each adding a different flavor to the established formula. The series has explored themes of family, cannibalism, and the dark underbelly of rural America, all while maintaining its reputation for intense visceral horror. Despite changes in style and tone, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains synonymous with extreme cinema, influencing countless horror films, filmmakers, and is still the ultimate summer horror movie.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride — the sprawling attraction that packs a spooky patch of Griffith Park with ghouls, goblins and eerie attractions — has never closed for a private party. Not for the Obamas, the Beckhams, Christina Aguilera or any of the VIPs that have flocked to the pop-up during the Halloween season in its 16 years of existence. That changed on Oct. 10, when the public exited the area known as Midnight Falls to make way for host Janelle Monáe and nearly 100 of her nearest and dearest.

From Terrifier 3 to Dawn of the Dead to John Carpenters The Thing, some of the scariest horror movies ever made end on a hauntingly ambiguous note. A cliffhanger ending can serve a few dramatic purposes. In the horror genre, the most common function of a cliffhanger is to leave the audience appropriately unsettled as they exit the theater. After finding out that Sarah is still trapped in the cave at the end of The Descent or David has switched places with Walter at the end of Alien: Covenant, the audience is left deeply disturbed.
Theres a sense of comfort and closure in a definitive ending like Sally escaping from Leatherface at the end of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or Chris being saved by his best friend at the end of Get Out. Its much more discomforting to get no closure whatsoever in an ambiguous ending like The Shining or The Birds.

"I remember the screams in the theater. People walked out. But the audience that stayed was hooked." Those are the words of Gunnar Hansen, the man behind Leatherface, writing in his book "Chain Saw Confidential" about how audiences reacted to director Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" in 1974. Hooper, for his part, had become bored with the horror genre and " set out as a fan of the genre to do something that gave you [...] your money's worth," as he put it in an interview with NPR in 2017. Safe to say, mission accomplished.

Last year, it was announced that the second season would be titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and we’re now just a couple of days away from the premiere date! Monsters is set to start streaming on September 19th… and in the build-up to the season’s premiere, Murphy has gone ahead and revealed that season 3 is going to star Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam as murderer and graverobber Ed Gein.
Variety reports that Murphy made this announcement onstage during a Monsters promotional event in Los Angeles.

In 1974, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre laid the groundwork for the slasher genre as we know it today. This subset of horror films introduced the world to fledgling actors who would grow into well-known talents, like Jamie Lee Curtis and Jennifer Aniston. Over the years, many incarnations of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre have done the same: We’ve seen Viggo Mortensen, Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey square off against several variations of Leatherface. This year, the TCM franchise is once again taking on a new form — and it’s filled with fresh faces that will likely haunt a whole new generation of viewers. Here’s exactly who Leatherface will be hunting down in the 2022 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Director Fede Alvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), is currently in theatres – and this isn’t the first time he has added to a popular genre franchise. Not only did he make his feature directorial debut with the 2013 version of Evil Dead, but two years ago he teamed with Legendary Pictures and the Netflix streaming service to bring us a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, which he produced and crafted the story for alongside his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. Now Legendary is working with the Six Flags theme park company to bring an experience inspired by that Texas Chainsaw Massacre film to Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags Over Texas – and we’ve gotten our hands on a batch of images that offer a preview of the experience! The Texas Chain Saw Massacre inspired countless rip-offs that shaped the horror genre for years to come. Some films, like The Butcher, failed to capture the essence of the original, lacking in quality and innovation. Standout movies like House of the Devil and Wrong Turn successfully paid homage to the iconic Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was among the most influential horror movies ever made, and in the years since its release, there have been countless imitators and copycat movies. Director Tobe Hooper created a new type of horror as he depicted the unstoppable serial killer Leatherface, which would signal the dawn of a new era of over-the-top violence and the use of power tools as a murder weapon. While some rip-offs of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were blatant cash grabs, others truly added to its concept and led to movies that could be enjoyed on their own merits.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights is about to get groovy.
The Weeknd (nee Abel Tesfaye) returns to Halloween Horror Nights this year with a brand-new experience The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy. This marks the musician’s return to Universal’s spooky season offering, after 2022’s After Hours Nightmare, which used the mythology surrounding his 2020 album “After Hours” as a jumping off point. By now, you’ve likely heard that Trap, the latest movie from M. Night Shyamalan that opened this weekend, revolves around two central plot points: A super-dorky dad played by Josh Hartnett has taken his teen daughter to see her favorite singer at a concert that doubles as a trap (see title) for a serial killer terrorizing Philadelphia; and this father-of-the-year contender is, in fact, the killer. Both of these elements are revealed in the trailer that dropped this past April, so we’re not exactly spoiling anything major… yet.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s seminal horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it’s the perfect time to delve into the chilling true story that inspired its infamous villain, Leatherface. This feature explores the gruesome crimes of Ed Gein, the real-life monster whose heinous acts in the 1950s shocked the world and laid the groundwork for one of horror’s most enduring icons.
A pillar of horror cinema
When The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released in 1974, it didn’t just premiere in theatres; it tore through the cultural landscape like Leatherface’s chainsaw through flesh. Made on a shoestring budget, the film’s gritty realism and unrelenting tension set it apart from the more polished horror movies of the time. Audiences were unprepared for the visceral experience that Hooper delivered—a film that felt disturbingly real, as if it could be happening just down the road.

French filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, the duo behind Inside, Leatherface, and The Deep House, step outside of horror ever so slightly for their latest, The Soul Eater. The adaptation of Alexis Laipsker‘s novel, penned by Annelyse Batrel and Ludovic Lefebvre, dabbles in the supernatural to lend atmosphere and intrigue to a standard investigative thriller. While its procedural elements may feel more rote, at least in an era inundated by crime thrillers, Maury and Bustillo pull from their horror toolkit and plunge into dark subject matter with aplomb.

Leatherface: TCM III is a hidden gem in horror sequels, with star Viggo Mortensen shining as the villainous Tex. The movie smartly ignores previous sequels to focus on suspense and character development, creating an underrated entry. TCM III combines the best elements of the original films, with a bigger, more stylish approach and a darker portrayal of Leatherface.
Despite being overlooked in its own franchise even though it stars a three-time Oscar nominee, the 1990 sequel Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is a gem that deserves more love. 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, based on a horrifying true story, is one of the all-time classic horror movies, and nothing in the franchise has topped it since. Of course, few horror movie sequels ever live up to the shocking originals, especially of the big and beloved horror franchises.
Still, that doesn't mean all sequels should be written off as subpar. More than any other genre,...

Unfortunately, it’s been a few years since Bryniarski has had a prominent acting role and he has fallen on some hard times – so he’s seeking help from his fans through a GoFundMe campaign.
Bryniarski explains the situation he’s currently in: “Recently, wildfires forced me to evacuate my home in California, leaving me displaced and uncertain about the future.

Just when you think that horror — currently in a major gold rush — is all out of fresh ideas, along comes In A Violent Nature. This is a film that takes the familiar gore of the slasher movie and gives it a fresh, gently experimental sheen. It’s not always an experiment that works, but it’s a very good sign that it exists.
Filmed by writer-director Chris Nash on a presumably minimal budget in the wilds of Ontario, Canada, the conceit here is: what if there were a slasher film told from the perspective of the guy doing the slashing? In this case, said slasher in question is Johnny, played by Ry Barrett: a mysterious brute figure who is seemingly awakened from a slumber when something very precious is taken from him, and who quickly sets out on a deadly warpath to get it back.
He is a fearsomely effective boogeyman.
