It took one day at a time, but Norman Lear’s long-gestating comedy project “Guess Who Died” finally has a home: NBC.
The Peacock network has given a pilot production commitment to the single-camera comedy, which Lear recently re-developed with Peter Tolan.
Set in a retirement village, “Guess Who Died” has been in the works for at least seven years. Lear had pitched the show around town several times, and expressed dismay that the show wouldn’t get made because of its focus on older characters.

But “Guess Who Died” gained momentum after Lear, at age 95, earned raves for the recent successful remake of his 1970s comedy “One Day at a Time,” executive produced by Gloria Calderon Kellett and and Mike Royce. That show comes from Sony Pictures TV, as does “Guess Who Died.

Norman Lear is moving one step closer to making his long-gestating comedy “Guess Who Died” a reality.
Emmy-winning writer Peter Tolan (“The Larry Sanders Show,” “Rescue Me”) has joined the project as co-writer with Lear on the show, which is set in a retirement village. Lear has been working on the show for at least seven years, and frequently brings the project up in interviews. But until recently, he expressed dismay that it might never get made.
But now the legendary TV producer, at age 94, is on another hot streak. Following the recent successful remake of Lear’s 1970s sitcom “One Day at a Time,” now reimagined at Netflix with stars Justina Machado and Rita Moreno, Sony Pictures TV is developing “Guess Who Died” as a spec comedy script.
That means it’s still in very early stages of development, but the addition of Tolan gives it more momentum. Tolan...

Sam Raimi of Oz The Great and Powerful has come attached to the untitled Bermuda Triangle movie at Skydance, which is one of three competing projects currently simmering in development.
The other two, according to The Hollywood Reporter, have set up shop across Universal and Warner Bros., though with Raimi now in talks to helm the mystery thriller, it seems Skydance’s movie is the furthest along even at this early stage in development.
Centering on the infamous stretch of sea between Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda, the Bermuda Triangle (Aka the Devil’s Triangle) has a long history of aircraft and ships venturing into its waters, only to disappear without a trace. Estimations are all over the place, and ever since the phrase Bermuda Triangle was first coined in 1964, that relatively small channel in the North Atlantic has become something of a worldwide phenomenon among conspiracy theorists, with potential...

Preacher is one of my favorite series currently running on TV and it's going to be released on Blu-ray and DVD October 4.
The first season takes a while to get going, mostly because of character development but it really gets going. Lots of gore and is damned hilarious in spots. Very interesting characters as well. Can't wait for season 2. Read more about the upcoming release below.

While Sam Raimi has been keeping his skills sharp lately on television, helming episodes of "Rake" and "Ash vs Evil Dead," it doesn't mean the director is shying away from the big screen. Three years on from "Oz The Great And Powerful," Raimi is putting together a slate of projects that are certainly eyebrow raising. Last month, we learned he'll tackle a remake of Jacques Audiard's "A Prophet," and now he's got another ambitious effort in the works. Read More: Sam Raimi To Direct Remake Of Jacques Audiard's 'A Prophet' Over at Warner Bros., Raimi is now attached to helm "World War 3," and you can probably guess what it's about. AMC's Charle Collier released this statement (which Collider shared)...

AMC on Sunday released the first trailer for Preacher, its adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s 1990s comic.
Preacher centers on Rev. Jesse Custer (played by Agent Carter‘s Dominic Cooper), a conflicted Texas minister who merges with a spiritual force called Genesis — making him more mighty than the Almighty.
Joined by his gun-toting girlfriend Tulip (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Ruth Negga) and the hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy (Misfits‘ Joseph Gilgun), Custer begins a violent journey across the country in search of answers from a disenfranchised God.

I had the pleasure of speaking with writer and director Rosemary Rodriguez in midtown Manhattan two days before her film "Silver Skies" will have its United States premiere at the Woodstock Film Festival on Saturday October 3.
Rosemary Rodriguez wrote and directed the feature, "Acts of Worship, "which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, including the John Cassavetes Award for Best Feature. Her episodic TV work includes "Empire," "The Good Wife," (where she is a regular director), "Manhattan," "Rake," "Elementary" and "Vegas." She is currently directing the new Marvel series on Netflix, "Jessica Jones."
"Silver Skies," Rosemary’s second feature, chronicles a group of seniors whose lives turn upside down when their Los Angeles apartment complex threatens to be sold out from under them.
We began our conversation talking about the evolution of "Silver Skies."
Rodriguez : It took about ten years. I ended up going to the MacDowell Colony with an outline for "Silver Skies" and wrote the script while I was there. Then, when I directed a "Law and Order" episode, I hit it off with (star) Dennis Farina and he loved the script. He helped to get the movie made. Fast forward almost two years later I called Dennis and told him we got the money. We picked the start date, and then he passed away two weeks later. I was devastated when he passed away. But then things fell in place. Fred Roos and Arthur Sarkissian came to the reading of the script, and they said, ‘let’s do this movie.’ The movie is dedicated to Dennis. He was my guardian angel.
Kouguell: In "Silver Skies," the theme of ageism is tackled straight on. The characters in this ensemble piece are threatened with the possible loss of their homes and livelihood. You describe "Silver Skies" as very personal and inspired by your parents’ aging. The characters of Nick and Phil are inspired by your father, who was a bookie in Boston, and the character, Eve, by your mother.
Rodriguez : Valerie Perrine’s character always has flowers; that was my mother. I watched my parents get old when I was still young. I saw how their relationships changed. You think logic would say life would get easier when you get older, but the emotional truth is that life still happens on its own terms. I think seniors don’t have a voice in this world. These are people who want to have sex. They want to work. They want to spend money. Make money. Have money.
Kouguell: You don’t shy away from thought-provoking issues, facing this generation, including the sexual assault of one female character and another main character’s choice she made of personal survival that causes the death of her spouse.
Rodriguez : My role model for directors is Robert Altman. His movies were a slice of life. The ironic thing about being a human being on this planet is that you have no idea what is going to happen next. The movie is real life. You’re going on a roller coaster ride; there are parts you’re laughing because life is like that, and then the rug gets pulled right out from under you.
The issues women go through, and with this female character with her husband abusing her, and feeling guilty over surviving, doing whatever she had to survive, whatever way she needed to behave was maybe ‘not as a good girl’ would, and coming to terms with that. Sexual abuse to elders is real. Elder abuse is real. I wanted to bring that issue in, as well as bring in that feminist message in there.
Kouguell: In "Silver Skies," the trepidation and excitement of newfound love is complicated by raw emotion as seen in one character’s personal and financial insecurities with a recent widow.
Rodriguez : Love doesn’t stop people at a certain age, it doesn’t stop their desires. It doesn’t matter what age we are. To work with these wonderful actors and Alex Rocco in particular -- he was just like a teenage boy when doing his scenes with Valerie Perrine, saying: “I’m used to playing killers, I’m not used to playing lovers.”
(Alex Rocco passed away July 18 of this year.)
Rodriguez : The recent memorial for Alex was on the racetrack: “Friends of Rocco” – it was the seventh race, it was dedicated to him. I loved him dearly. I miss him dearly. It was intended as a celebration of this wonderful man. His character reminds me of my dad. As I told my dad when it became clear he had to retire, I told him, “You always wanted to go out a winner.”
Kouguell: The film stars Barbara Bain, George Hamilton, Jack McGee, Valerie Perrine, Mariette Hartley, Howard Hesseman, Jack Betts, and Alex Rocco. Did they have any input into the script?
Rodriguez : They definitely did. They stuck to the script a lot. I’m a big collaborator; I want to hear what people have to say. In the film George Hamilton’s character is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Jack McGee’s brother, George Hamilton’s mother, and my dad, all had Alzehimer’s and we shared our respective experiences to further develop George’s character. In a way it was a tribute for George to his mother, for Jack to his brother, and mine to my father.
Kouguell: You’ve earned great success as a director on "The Good Wife." How has directing television influenced your work as a director on "Silver Skies"?
Rodriguez : I can work efficiently and quickly, and in television that’s some of the skill set that gets developed. My instincts are very sharp. The idea out there is that we’re less creative working in television, but the real truth is we’re under such pressure that we can make decisions quickly, and also go with your heart and instincts. It’s very quick and very satisfying, and of course millions of people see your work in a shorter window of time and that is opposite of a movie.
Kouguell: Currently, you are the 4th Vice President of the Directors Guild of America. Although there is more media attention on the low percentage of women directors getting work in the industry, the numbers are still not rising fast enough.
Rodriguez : The DGA works very hard and we all work hard to address the issue of diversity. It’s been a problem for many years. My involvement in the DGA is reflective of how much the DGA cares about women directors and minority directors, and wants to get us out there. It’s a benefit to the Guild. There’s a lot of content there now and opportunity for diversity. I want to be meeting with you in a few years when this isn’t an issue any more; where there are not “female directors” – that there are just great storytellers and that we don’t have to separate each other.
Kouguell: Some final words about "Silver Skies"?
Rodriguez: The way these actors enriched my life was unexpected and so profound. These are people with 50 and 60-year careers in a tough industry. These actors showed up and put their hearts in these characters. They’re artists. They were there for the love for what they do. They just loved the characters. They had beautiful chemistry together. We are part of each other’s lives. I never could give back to them what they gave to me.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's comic book adaptation Preacher has been picked up for a full series at AMC...
For months, we were given sporadic images and updates regarding the shooting of the Preacher pilot. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin seemed keen to build hype for their potential show by sharing as much as possible via social media.
If this was a tactical ploy to show off the potential popularity of a Preacher series to AMC - it definitely worked. The network has picked up the comic book adaptation for a full series.
Seth Rogen broke the news on Twitter, saying "Preacher is coming to AMC! @evandgoldberg @SamCatlin123! The beginning is nigh!!!"

THR adds that AMC is picking up ten episodes of the Garth Ennis– and Steve Dillon–inspired material, the first installment of which is set to debut in mid-2016. Agent Carter's Dominic Cooper will star in Preacher as the Rev. Jesse Custer, the titular disillusioned and supernaturally powered preacher who embarks on a quest to confront God alongside a friend (Joseph Gilgun) and an ex (Ruth Negga). Others in the cast reportedly include Rake's Ian Colletti, This Is England's Joseph Gilgun, and True Blood's Lucy Griffiths. Catlin will act as showrunner and one of many EPs, with Rogen and Goldberg set to direct. "We started reading the comic when it...

Lucy Griffiths will be given another chance at a Vertigo adaptation, appearing in Preacher after being dropped by Constantine…
Here’s an interesting one – it looks like Lucy Griffiths, who was ditched from Constantine after just one episode (despite being the co-lead), will be getting another bite of the Vertigo Comics adaptation cherry.
She will appear in the Preacher pilot episode, joining a cast that already includes Misfits’ Joseph Gilgun, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Ruth Negga, and Ian Colletti of comedy series Rake. Griffiths will play Emily Woodrow, a new character invented for the telly show.
Here’s what we’ve been told about her character: "Emily Woodrow, a no-nonsense single mother of three. Emily's a waitress, the church organist, bookkeeper and Jesse's loyal right hand. Stoic and strong, wise beyond her years, she can’t help but have a little thing for Preacher Jesse."

Following a ruling last month that the Television Academy would only consider half hour shows eligible for the comedy category at the Emmys, a panel of nine analysts have now begun handing down the rulings for exemptions in the selection process. The panel, which was set up to determine the category assignment of hour-long shows that appealed their placement in drama, has now ruled, as per Variety, that the Fox show Glee, the Showtime series Shameless, and the CW series Jane The Virgin can compete as comedies at the upcoming primetime Emmys. The decision will apply to all categories, from Acting to Directing, and so on.
One show that notably wasn’t granted a waiver, however, is the Netflix serial Orange Is The New Black. The series, which revolves around the inhabitants of a women’s prison, was categorised as a comedy at last year’s Primetime Emmys, where it picked up three wins.

While we still don’t have a confirmed Jesse Custer to lead AMC’s Preacher, the show has secured another supporting character to back up the troubled man of the cloth. Ian Colletti, who recently took to the small screen in Fox’s drama Rake, has now stepped up to play the unfortunately-named Arseface.
Presumably, Colletti will commit to lengthy stints in the makeup chair to fulfil his duties. As another struggling soul plucked from the pages of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic, Arseface is saddled with the nickname after a botched suicide attempt. The son of Sheriff Hugo Root, he self-administers a shotgun to the face upon hearing of his idol Kurt Cobain’s death. Unfortunately, he fails and is left with a face that resembles what once character refers to as an arse.

We still don't have a Jesse Custer, but following yesterday's announcements of Ruth Negga as Tulip, the Preacher TV series has now also found its Arseface. Ian Colletti, most recently seen as Finn in Fox's legal drama Rake, will be taking on the legendary mantle and wearing what's presumably going to be quite an extensive facial prosthetic.Yes, Arseface: perhaps a reassurance to anyone who was concerned that the TV series would water down the books. He's the son of sheriff Hugo Root, who attempted and failed a copycat suicide with his father's shotgun after the death of Kurt Cobain. In the TV series he's called Eugene, but we're not sure we ever actually learn that name in the comics. When Sheriff Root commits suicide after a particularly nasty encounter with Custer and his cohorts, Arseface swears revenge, but eventually comes round to the Custer cause: Custer and Irish vampire Cassidy get him laid,...

Ian Colletti ("Rake") has scored the role of Eugene Root, a.k.a. Arseface, in AMC's upcoming TV series adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's "Preacher" comics.
The series revolves around Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher who merges with a creature that gives him the ability to bend people's will. After learning that God has abandoned his post in heaven, he goes on a journey with his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a female vampire named Cassidy to find God.
In the comics, Eugene has a disfigured face and speech impediment dismissed by the world. Yet he's an incredibly nice kid who looks up to Jesse, although he's haunted by his past.
The casting follows that of Negga earlier this week, while Dominic Cooper is reportedly in contention to play Jesse. Sam Catlin wrote the pilot script and will executive produce alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with...

Another cast member has been added to AMC's small screen take on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's insanely brilliant comic series, Preacher. Taking on the role of "Arseface" (aka Eugene Root) will be young Ian Colletti, who played the title role in the 2013 film Jimmy, and was a regular on Fox's Rake last year. This is a unique character to say the least, and his depiction on screen will almost certainly be met with some controversy. He's nicknamed Arseface because after a failed suicide attempt... well, his face resembles an arse! Here's how Deadline describe his Tv incarnation: "Even with his horribly disfigured face and severe speech impediment, Eugene's still the nicest kid you'll ever meet who really looks up to Jesse. Stomach-churningly difficult to look at, Eugene's the town’s reviled Frankenstein’s monster but that won't change his earnest, sweet and pure outlook on life.

We finally had our first network cancellation of the fall season last week, when ABC dropped the ax on "Manhattan Love Story." Had the Alphabet waited one more week, we'd have made it through the first season in a while where all the new fall shows got to debut before one was canceled. But that was not to be, and instead we have our final new network fall show (with plenty more on the bench for midseason, or whatever the broadcast nets are willing to call it these days) coming up this week, along with a new cable comedy. Both, oddly, feature Jack McGee in a supporting role (the result of cable and network shows often filming on different schedules), and that — along with the fact that I don't feel strongly about either one at this stage — is enough excuse to put them together in the same post for a...
