Jacob ‘Jake’ Byrd’s visually stirring horror Adalynn is out now on digital platforms from Summer Hill Films, LLC.

Byrd’s debut, Adalynn follows a mother fighting postpartum depression and slipping over the edge. It becomes hard to distinguish where depression ends, and her nightmares turn real, as she and her newborn are haunted by a stalker unlike any other. ‘Adalynn’ trades in a space between horror, fantasy, ghosts, demons, the Satanic occult and dreams. The film stars Sydney Carvill known for ‘Keep in the Dark’ (2022) and ‘Moon Students’ (2022), with Wade Baker of ‘Division 19’ (2017) and ‘Airliner Sky Battle’ (2020) and Janet Carter from ‘Revenge for My Mother’ (2022) and ‘Swim Instructor Nightmare’ (2022). July 9th is bringing all kinds of horror-rific awesomeness our way with this week’s genre-related Blu-ray and DVD releases. Easily one of my most anticipated discs of this year, the new Silent Hill Collector’s Edition from Scream Factory heads home on Tuesday as well as Mill Creek’s stunning Steelbook for Mothra, which looks to be a must-have for any movie monster aficionados out there. In terms of recent films, both Pet Sematary (2019) and Claire Denis’ High Life are hitting various formats this week, and for you Andy Sidaris fans out there, Savage Beach is hitting Blu-ray as well.

Set 20 or so years in the future, this low-budget, colour-drained sci-fi thriller is a curate’s egg – one that’s been overboiled and well past its sell-by date. It was finished back in 2017 and is only now dripping into cinemas, where it’s sure to last mere minutes before being swept up into some streaming platform’s slipstream.

Nothing ages as poorly as a dystopia. Division 19 proves the point by relitigating the anxieties of 2016, positing a surveillance state where an all-powerful TV company called Panopticon (groan) broadcasts 24/7 coverage from prisons to a supposedly enthralled population, although the budget seemingly didn’t stretch far enough for many shots of rapt extras soaking up the show.

The film premiered at the Fantasporto Film Festival in 2017, where it won the Critics' Award, and also played at the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival last year, where it won Best Director. Set in 2039, Division 19 takes place in a future where jails have been turned into online portals where the public gets to choose what prisoners eat, wear, watch and who they fight. Outside of the Scream franchise and The Craft Neve Campbell doesnt typically dabble in the genre all too much. Thats unfortunate given the fact that she makes for an amazing Scream Queen. However Neve is indeed making a return to the genre... kind of. Division 19 is categorized as a thriller but it sounds remarkably dark. Dark enough to be deemed horror for sure.

The movie was started as a Kickstarter last month, and is far from reaching its goal, but it looks like they found funding from an outside source and started production in Detroit this week. Michael Bay is busy shooting Transformers 4 in Detroit, where Ryan Gosling has also just finished shooting his feature directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster.
