Chris Hemsworth is most popularly known for playing Thor in the MCU. The actor has played the character in multiple MCU films and the role has elevated him to an A-list movie star. However, he has also done some brilliant character-driven dramas where he got to flex his acting chops. One of them was the critically acclaimed 2013 sports drama Rush.
Chris Hemsworth & Daniel Brühl in Rush | Universal Pictures
Hemsworth played the real-life Formula 1 racer James Hunt who won the 1976 Formula One World Championship. The actor was praised by critics and audiences for his uncanny resemblance and nuanced performance of the late racer. However, Hunt’s son Freddie was not as impressed with Hemsworth’s performance and deemed that the film did him dirty.

While Chris Hemsworth and Thor are a match made in heaven, his association with Marvel and the MCU isn’t his only claim to fame. The Australian star recently impressed audiences by tapping into a dark and maniacal side to his personality with his presence in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

A decade earlier, Hemsworth took up another challenging role in Ron Howard’s sports biopic Rush which documented the rivalry between Formula 1 legends Niki Lauda and James Hunt. While the Avengers actor, who portrayed Hunt in the film, believed that this was one of his most fulfilling roles, the sportsman’s son Freddie Hunt was extremely critical of his performance, and openly slammed the actor and Howard for not doing justice to his father’s legacy.

In his review of the new horror film Immaculate (you can read it Here), JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said the movie – which reunites Sydney Sweeney with Michael Mohan, who directed her in the erotic thriller The Voyeurs and the Netflix series Everything Sucks! – is “a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies.” During a recent post-screening Q&a at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Boston Seaport, Mohan also revealed that one particular scene in the movie was inspired by the work one of my favorite grindhouse era filmmakers, Jack Hill – and that same scene also had to be salvaged with the help of Saw X director Kevin Greutert!
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared the information from the Q&A, reporting that Mohan said, “The biggest scene that did not work and I’m still not happy with is the scene when Isabelle tries to drown Cecilia. I studied a...

Following Friday’s seventh episode, musician and one-time judge of the show Orville Peck makes his “Pit Stop” debut. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Orville tells Trixie that he’s watched the show since season one and she shares that he acts like a drag queen when they spend time together in their personal life. Orville calls season 5 his favorite of all time because of how classic their “Untucked” episodes were. The two share commentary on large makeup like Dawn‘s considering former contestants like Trixie, Mimi Imfurst and Bianca Del Rio had to explain their “club kid makeup” back then, but now queens like Dawn and the Methyd family just get to exist.

Tonight on “The Amazing Race,” the final three teams travel to Seattle, where they must complete three challenges in a scramble leg, a first in “Amazing Race” history. This finale episode titled “A Sunset, Seattle Scramble” airs Wednesday, December 13 on CBS. Phil Keoghan hosts.

Following Friday’s seventh episode, season 14 alum Deja Skye makes her “Pit Stop” debut to chat about “Forensic Queens.” Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.
In their recap of the episode, Deja tells Bianca that she thinks Kahanna Montrese has been “killing it” on the runway and that Jessica Wild is the one keeping her entertained. Still, Bianca found time to point out how big of a fan Deja is of Bianca and then continued to make Deja fall out of her chair laughing throughout the episode. In their calmer moments, Deja was able to explain to Bianca that like Peppermint last week, the game should not be based on track record and each queen should play for themselves.

As a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Michelle Visage is a stoic presence with expert critiques on the challenges. But once she meets the queens again on Whatcha Packin’, Visage is finally able to connect with them on a deeper level. RuPaul’s Drag Race is a reality competition series where a group of drag queens compete in a variety of fashion challenges to become America’s Next Drag Superstar. Eliminated queens then join Visage for Whatcha Packin’, an after show where they are able to show off the outfits they didn’t get a chance to wear and talk about themselves. As she is unable to really speak with the queens during the competition, Visage says that finally speaking with them is a very special experience.

Jack Hill gives us the lowdown on one of his most belatedly popular movies, which took several years to make it to the drive-ins, largely because it was shot in black-and-white. Filmed under the title The Winner, it’s a gritty, no-frills drag racing saga set around the dangerous Figure Eight Races, which seem designed to promote crowd-pleasing car crashes. Veteran character actor Brian Donlevy’s final film and Ellen Burstyn’s first (under the name Ellen McRea).

The latest in our series of writers highlighting underseen film is a recommendation for an unsettling thriller about online identity
When I stumbled across 2018 psychological thriller Cam on Netflix this year, I braced myself for a tacky technological horror film on the perils of the internet, in the same vein as 2014’s Unfriended. What I got instead was arguably one of the most underrated offerings on the platform. The lack of hype surrounding this expertly told tale of identity theft in its most extreme form can only be put down to a lack of awareness.

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

Given the massive success of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” over the last decade, it’s no surprise that the show has almost unilaterally defined the mainstream understanding of drag artistry. And can “Drag Race” continue to thrive now that everyone wants a piece of that success?

The Great McGinty
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1940/ 1:33:1 / 82 min.
Starring Brian Donlevy, Akim Tamiroff
Cinematography by William C. Mellor
Written and Directed by Preston Sturges
If the story of a unscrupulous crook who rises to great political power hits a little too close to home these days, consider that in 1940’s The Great McGinty the mobster in question is a fundamentally decent gent who sacrifices his career to do the right thing. When the jig is up he high-tails it to the border, penniless but with a clean conscience. Current events require that Preston Sturges’ bittersweet political satire be filed under Fairy Tales.
The movie opens in a rowdy little dive in South America where the once and future lowlife Dan McGinty has made his new home, lording over the bar while dispensing equal amounts booze and wisdom. One poor fellow wanders in who could use a little of both.

All-American race car mania is alive and well in this excellent Jeff Bridges movie, a true biographical story researched by Tom Wolfe. Junior Johnson needs a future beyond running moonshine for his father, and finds it climbing the rungs of success in the stock car racing game. This may be the most satisfying saga of its kind, and it helped prove that Bridges was a star.

Yen Tan Has Been Making Movies For Over 15 Years, But Says ‘Being a Queer Asian’ Has Hurt His Career
While working on his latest drama, “1985,” writer-director Yen Tan was approached by the agent for one of the movie’s stars. The agent noticed that Tan, who has been making movies around Texas for over 15 years and received an Independent Spirit Award for his Sundance-acclaimed 2013 feature “Pit Stop,” had no representation. In Tan’s recollection, the agent told him, “I don’t want to be blunt, but I think you being Asian has a lot to do with it.”
Tan, who was raised in Malaysia but immigrated to Dallas when he was 19, said he wasn’t surprised by the admission. “I’m really glad he said that,” Tan said in an interview, “and that it was a white person saying that to me, because I always felt that. A lot of people like me sort of internalize that, and wonder if it’s that or something else. I’m glad...

Prepare to break out the handkerchiefs several times during writer-director Yen Tan’s “1985,” a deeply emotional tearjerker and family story set in a year when an HIV diagnosis was effectively a death sentence. This is a realistic, discreet, yet exploratory film that earns its tears honestly and scrupulously.
Gay, closeted, and HIV-positive Adrian comes home to Texas for Christmas for what he knows will probably be the last time. Tan’s camera keeps a polite and empathetic distance from Adrian and his parents Dale (Michael Chiklis) and Eileen (Virginia Madsen), both of whom are very religious, and his little brother Andrew.
The set-up of this story admittedly doesn’t sound too promising, and the very grainy black-and-white cinematography might be a problem for some viewers, but “1985” is a film that is full of virtues, not least the acting talent of its cast, who are all expert at conveying a lot...

Gay fests are currently showing a restoration of the late Arthur J. Bressan Jr.’s “Buddies,” a microbudgeted drama that arrived in 1985 as the first-ever narrative feature about the AIDS crisis, one resolutely from the viewpoint of the already hard-hit gay community. A few months later network TV waded in with the acclaimed “An Early Frost,” which like most early mainstream treatments of the subject took a perspective designed to soften up AIDS-phobic Middle America — that of “respectable” parents coming to terms with their sons’ homosexuality as well as probably terminal illnesses.
Bridging the two 30-odd years later is Yen Tan’s fine “1985,” which expands on ideas first explored in his short of the same name two years ago. This excellent drama presents an ’80s flashback perhaps even more uncomfortably familiar to many gay men who survived that era than the stricken Manhattan of “Buddies” or the upscale suburbia of “Frost.

If the Oscars’ shut-out of the French film “Bpm (Beats Per Minute)” is any indication, Hollywood is still put off by AIDS films, no matter how brilliant. “1985” is arresting in the same way as Robin Campillo’s epic portrait of Act Up Paris, though its story is much quieter. Set in Texas, “1985” follows a young man named Adrian (Cory Michael Smith), who returns to his small Texas hometown to visit his family for Christmas. It’s clear in the weighted silences and stilted small talk that Adrian hasn’t kept in close touch with his religious family.
He stands tall over his brusque father (Michael Chiklis) at baggage claim, as they try to remember the last time he was home. His mother (Virginia Madsen) greets him warmly, though her pleading to call up his estranged childhood friend Carly (Jamie Chung) clearly bothers him. Last year we debuted the poster for Yen Tan's 1985, a short film that evoked potent memories in just eight minutes. It won a Special Jury Prize at SXSW. Now a feature film version is on its way. The cast is impressive: Cory Michael Smith (TV's Gotham), Virginia Madsen, Michael Chiklis, Noah Schnapp (Stranger Things) and Jamie Chung. Here's the synopsis, per Deadline: Terminally-ill Adrian (Smith) flies home from New York to visit his estranged family in Texas. His attempt at revealing his circumstances to his conservative parents (Madsen, Chiklis) are challenged when he reconnects with his preteen brother (Schnapp) and his old flame (Chung). Yen Tan (Pit Stop) wrote the screenplay and will direct. He's a long-time acquaintance, talented filmmaker and an all-around good...

Square Enix has just rolled out its latest series of patches for Final Fantasy Xv, one of which brings with it the long-awaited changes to the RPG’s oft-criticized Chapter 13. Available now on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Chapter 13, Verse 2, as it’s so-called, sees players take control of Noctis’ bodyguard Gladiolus as he attempts to navigate his way through Zegnautus Keep. Judging by the trailer released alongside the update, it seems as if the musclebound warrior will also team up with Ignis during the events of Verse 2 and, if nothing else, the adjustments should help to serve as a primer for tomorrow’s Episode Gladiolus Dlc.
Besides the above, Patch 1.06 also includes various bug fixes, gameplay enhancements and new music tracks for the Regalia, as well as new and improved versions of Noctis’ Arcana spells, Alterna, Holy and Death. You can see them all demoed in the video above and,...

Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Pastoral (Ewan McGregor)
If my limited experience with Philip Roth adaptations is any indication, his novels deal in emotion. There are existential crises concerning identity involved, each a character study about life’s impact beyond the surface experiences propelling them forward. This isn’t something easily translated from page to screen when so much consists of internalized motivation. You must really look into the text, ignoring plot to...

It’s time to make a hilarious “pit” stop during yet another Monday back at work.
This delightful moment comes from Our Pit Stop, an Instagram account belonging to a family that fosters pit bull dogs looking for forever homes.
The family’s current furry tenant is Opal, a beautiful girl who came to them seven months ago from Fern Dog Rescue. When Opal the “silliest little hippo” was found, she had very little fur due to a skin infection and was also plagued with a myriad of other health issues.

Nine years before he completed production on the multi-million dollar Disney remake of “Pete’s Dragon,” David Lowery was living out of the back of his car, editing corporate videos. The Dallas native directed his first feature, the little-seen “Lullaby,” at age 19. The ensuing years found him collaborating with a close-knit group of local film-savvy friends, but little in the way of upward mobility. “I never put a premium on making a living,” he told me in a recent phone conversation. “It was never one of those things that was important to me.”
Lowery’s work at the time suggests as much — it’s anything but commercial — and yet it provided him with an ideal platform for a massive career move as one of Disney’s newest secret weapons. “Pete’s Dragon,” a $60 million re-imagining of the 1977 live-action-animated musical film, has all the hallmarks of Lowery’s earlier work: a serene,...

Whether you loved them or hated them, the social media stars are going to be gone from your TV screens and will head back to the distant back-lit glow of you laptop, phone or any mobile device of your choosing.
We're one episode away from the finale and one more Pit Stop from the final finish line. This means, unless The Amazing Race pulls another Final 4 situation, one more team is going to be out of the running out of time right before the last leg, so who is it going to be?...

If an Express Pass were to show up this late in the game and a team were to use it on this ninth leg, it could really shake things up. And shaking things up seems like exactly what the powers that...

The Amazing Race had one of the most boring and embarrassing ends to a leg of the race in week 4. The difference between first and last place was not determined by the team's skill, luck or speed. It was merely determined by train schedule as 8 of the teams ended up on one train together to the Pit Stop. The last place team was all on their own and was eliminated from the race.
For Leg 5, The Amazing Race had to make this competition seem like an actual competition and hopefully separate the teams again. There were efforts made, but all in all, they failed. While not quite as bad as the finish to leg 4 was, week 5 of The Amazing Race was pretty disappointing, especially in its final moments. Not even the majestic beauty of the French mountains could save it from being a complete snooze fest.

We're gearing up to cover SXSW 2016, which begins next week in Austin, Texas, and to kick things off, we're happy to premiere the poster for Yen Tan's short film 1985. Mr. Tan wrote and directed the film, which stars Robert Sella and Lindsay Pulsipher. Mr. Tan is a personal acquaintance of long standing, so, frankly, I'm not entirely objective, but he made the wonderfully on-point drama Pit Stop a couple years back, as well as a flock of good short films over the years. He's also a very good poster artist, and we've premiered his work in the past. 1985 will enjoy its world premiere on Friday, March 11, at 10:15 p.m. at the Vimeo Theater, as part of the Texas Shorts Competition, and...

Like most fashion trends over the years, the Mohawk hairstyle has seen dramatic spikes in popularity and steep declines into virtual obscurity. In a lot of ways it rides the same rollercoaster as the WWE: you’re never quite sure when the next boom period will come but there’s a distinct suggestion that it’s probably just around the corner.
But one thing we all know is that Vince McMahon loves to be part of the “in crowd.” He loves his WWE empire to feel socially relevant, and he will pounce on something that swells in popularity like a cheetah on a galloping gazelle. So it was no surprise to see wrestlers suddenly sporting Mohawks whenever they crept back into the limelight during the 1980’s and late 1990’s – and again today.
Not that this is a bad thing of course. Mohawks look cool and more importantly...
