IFC Films and AMC Networks’ streamer Shudder have acquired “Dangerous Animals,” Sean Byrne (“The Devil’s Candy”)’s buzzy movie from Ld Entertainment, for the U.S.
Pairing the serial killer genre with sharksploitation, “Dangerous Animals” was penned by Nick Lepard and stars Jai Courtney (“Suicide Squad”) Hassie Harrison (“Yellowstone”) and Josh Heuston (“Dune: Prophecy”). The movie will get a wide release, exclusively in theaters, on June 6.
“Dangerous Animals” follows Zephyr (Harrison), a rebellious surfer who is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer (Courtney). “Held captive on his boat – she must escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below,” the synopsis reads.
Shudder’s SVP of acquisitions and productions, Emily Gotto, said “Sean Byrne is one of the most visceral filmmakers in the current genre space and we are thrilled to join forces with him again on ‘Dangerous Animals.'”

Two decades ago, stop-motion animator Adam Elliot burst onto the scene with his wonderful short Harvie Krumpet. Following a man cursed with lifelong bad luck, it earned him an Oscar and introduced the world at large to Elliot’s wicked sense of humor, massive heart, and singular animation style. A little ugly, a little beautiful, wholly of itself, Elliot’s stop-motion work set itself apart from the worlds of Henry Selick and Nick Park. His clay creations––misshapen, lovingly rendered people––live lives that are equally comedic and tragic. His work always veers into the existential, mirroring his own life experiences.
Calling his work “Clayography,” Elliot likes to think of it as animation for adults. With death, disease, and calamity, the films run the gamut of human existence. While he doesn’t soften the realities of things like obesity or addiction or death itself, there’s a warmth, a hilarity...

Alcoholism. Fetishism. Death. Aardman this certainly ain’t, but Adam Elliot’s film-festival-storming stop-motion animation proves more than capable of summoning big emotions through its clay creations. The characters of Memoir Of A Snail are more scuffed and visibly weighed down by the world, but the earnestness and vulnerability they carry throughout this sombre and occasionally darkly funny saga implores you to stick with them through the pain of it all.
Grace (Sarah Snook) — a collector of snails and owner of a cosy snail hat — is both the protagonist and narrator of the film, which, in biopic fashion, begins at the graveside of a beloved friend, before leaping right back to her birth in the ’70s. It’s an adroit vocal performance from Snook, who plays Grace with empathy that never crosses into over-sentimentality throughout a life marred by loss and loneliness. Grace’s mother dies while delivering her and...

A snail-obsessed introvert struggles with loneliness, hoarding and personal tragedy in Adam Elliot’s bleak stop-motion epic. Here’s our Memoir Of A Snail review.
Grace Pudel (Sarah Snook) is not one of life’s winners. Born with a cleft lip and the playground bullying that often comes with it, she spends a lonely, but contented childhood with her twin brother, Gilbert (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and paraplegic, alcoholic father, Percy (Dominique Pinon). When circumstances find her separated from both and sent to live with a pair of swingers in Canberra, she copes about as well as you’d expect.
Australian stop-motion whizz Adam Elliot’s sophomore feature is an Aardman tale with the edges left rough. The Claymation style is thick, dirty and often borderline disturbing – more in line with the genre’s uncanny origins than the higher framerate aesthetic coming out of the medium’s biggest players. There are some...

In a category that is often filled with animated films geared toward children and families, “Memoir of a Snail” and its themes of depression and conversion therapy immediately stand out in this year’s Best Animated Feature category. But this isn’t the first time that director Adam Elliot has found himself at the Academy Awards, with his short “Harvie Krumpet” winning 21 years ago.
Elliot notes how the success of “Harvie Krumpet” helped get “Mary & Max” off the ground, which released to critical acclaim after its 2009 Sundance premiere. On the campaign trail for “Memoir of a Snail,” Elliot finds himself back in the artistic hub of Los Angeles after 15 years, meeting agents and representatives from major studios like Netflix and Sony. “They’re all very lovely and nice but they all want me to direct one of their films,” he explains. “So far, it’s always been something for...

Has Hollywood reached peak AI paranoia? This awards season, before Karla Sofía Gascón’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) about George Floyd and Islam became the focus of consternation, the Oscar uproar was centered on the use of artificial intelligence in the tweaking of voice performances in Emilia Pérez — for Gascón’s singing — and in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, to improve the pronunciation of Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones’ Hungarian-language dialog.
The virulence of the backlash against such minor and technical applications of AI — used, in both cases, with the full participation and approval of the artists involved — illustrates the widespread perception, inside the film industry and among the general public, that AI is a threat to jobs and to artistic integrity. An AI zero-tolerance policy has become fashionable for celebrities, with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Glenn Close and Hank Azaria raising the alarm. Distributors have taken...

IndieWire invited the directors of the five Oscar-nominated Best Animated Features to pick and analyze a pivotal scene that best represents their films: Chris Sanders (“The Wild Robot”), Gints Zilbalodis (“Flow”), Kelsey Mann (“Inside Out 2”), Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham (“Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”), and Adam Elliot (“Memoir of a Snail”).
“The Wild Robot,” the Best Feature Annie winner, is the crowning achievement for writer-director Sanders. The dramatically compelling and visually arresting sci-fi adventure (adapted from Peter Brown’s illustrated book) finds robot Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) washed ashore on an uninhabited island, where she must adapt and survive among the animals. DreamWorks’ innovative handmade stylization takes Sanders back to his 2D roots with its tactile nature and watercolor backgrounds. The more time Roz spends in the wild, the more her surface changes with dents, scratches, mildew, and mold. She quickly becomes a hand-painted surface, blending in with the animals and the wilderness.

Drawing on his own life experiences and inspired by friends and acquaintances he’s met along the way, filmmaker Adam Elliot has landed himself an Academy Award nomination for his decidedly not kid-friendly stopmotion film Memoir of a Snail.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature, the pic explores the life of Australian girl Grace Pudel from childhood, where she is befriended by her eccentric neighbor Pinky, through her adult years. Grace fills her lonely life by hoarding all the snail-themed products and collectibles she can find.
“Grace is sort of an amalgamation of a lot of people and also myself,” Elliot said. “Primarily, she’s based on a very good friend of mine who was born with a cleft palate. As a little girl, she had a lot of operations on her mouth and was quite disfigured and, unfortunately, at school was bullied and teased. So she had a very, traumatic childhood.

The board of Asifa-Hollywood, the organization behind the 52nd annual Annie Awards, pondered, like many other organizers behind events on the awards season calendar, whether the show should be postponed or scaled back because of the devastating fires that ravaged Los Angeles in early January. Many members of the animation community are among those who’ve been severely impacted.
“We represent the animation community and it’s really important to us, especially at this time, that we support them a thousand percent,” says Asifa-Hollywood executive director Aubry Mintz. And after much discussion, the board decided that the show will go on, albeit with a somewhat more somber tone and featuring the announcement of efforts to consolidate resources and support for those in the community dealing with various (and in many cases multiple) losses.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains details of the film Memoir of a Snail.
Adam Elliot never shies away from an opportunity to turn societal misfits into people worthy of love and acceptance on screen. Though his signature style places his characters through a series of unfortunate events, there is often a bit of levity and strength that his leads hold while they become self-sustaining. “I’m telling stories about perceived imperfections and the flaws we all think we have and how many of us try to fix our flaws,” Elliot says. “But really what we should be doing is embracing them and also other people. Empathy is a real key ingredient with my characters.”
In his latest tragicomedy, Memoir of a Snail, set against the backdrop of 1970s Australia, the director centers his film around Grace Pudel (Sarah Snook), a melancholic recluse who finds comfort in the hoarding of snails...

Charades, the thriving sales company behind the Oscar-nominated “Flow” and “Memoir of a Snail,” has boarded “A New Dawn,” the promising feature debut of Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, the anime artist of Japanese box office smash hit “Your Name.”
Inspired by the changing Japanese landscape after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, “A New Dawn” unwinds inside an inactive fireworks factory that is about to go into administrative action. For the past four years, young Keitaro has lived inside the derelict structure, chasing the illusion of a father who vanished years before. The location used to be nestled in a lush forest, but the surrounding area has recently been redeveloped by the city, which covered the land with solar panels. Only a scant bit of greenery around the factory remains amongst the sea of panels.

Brady Corbet’s epic American immigrant saga “The Brutalist” has been given the top prize by the U.K.’s leading film writers and broadcasters.
At the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday night, the feature was named film of the year in a ceremony that saw the honors widely shared across a number of titles, although notably both “The Substance” and “A Complete Unknown” came away empty-handed.
Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” took two awards, including British/Irish film of the year and actor of the year for Ralph Fiennes, while RaMell Ross’s radical Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” was recognised with director of the year and the technical achievement award for Jomo Fray’s first-person cinematography.
Elsewhere on the night, Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy “A Real Pain” was another multiple prizewinner, awarded screenwriter of the year for the actor-filmmaker, and supporting actor of the year for co-star Kieran Culkin.

With its shocking story and lively animation, Look Back became a fan-favorite anime film in 2024. Ahead of the 97th Academy Awards, fans were excited to see Look Back making it to the nominations list. To their dismay, Look Back couldn’t make it to the list. This has sparked a conversation about the Oscars’ reservations against anime as a medium.

Such a discussion is important considering all that the anime film offers in a short span of time. For the same reason, the fan reactions are understandable. However, the worst aspect of this entire ordeal is Tatsuki Fujimoto not receiving his due.
Look Back is sad, beautiful, and truly riveting in many ways
Look Back hit the theatres in June 2024, and quickly garnered massive attention from fans. It follows the story of Fujino, a young artist, and her relationship with her craft.

The Best Animated Feature nominees are “Flow,” “Inside Out 2,” “Memoir of a Snail,” “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” and “The Wild Robot.”
“The Wild Robot” is the slight favorite after grabbing two additional Oscar nominations for score (Kris Bowers) and sound. This is a first for DreamWorks Animation. However, the sci-fi adventure from director Chris Sanders (who is very well liked and due for a win) is in a tight race with indie sensation “Flow,” which also secured a Best International Feature nomination for Latvia. When it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, the love was spread across the distributor scoreboard, from legacy Hollywood studios and their specialty divisions, to streamers and maverick indie distributors.
Netflix walked away with the most of any individual distributor on Tuesday with a total of 16 nods after Emilia Pérez landed a spot in 13 categories, the most of any film this year and setting a new record for a non-English-language film. And it’s just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Next up on the Academy’s scorecard of top-nominated individual distributors was powerhouse A24 with 14, including 10 for The Brutalist. The movie, which swept the Golden Globes, will use its front-runner status as it continues to expand in theaters, where it has earned a promising $5.9 million despite only playing in several hundred cinemas to date.

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”

The Oscars (and awards ceremonies in general) have a big animation problem. For much of Oscars history animated films have been shut out of nominations, with only animated short films having their own category. Then, once the Best Animated Feature category was created in 2001, it quickly came to be dominated by Disney films' and kids films in general. The Academy didn't take long to essentially consider the entire medium to be nothing more than a yearly celebration of Disney's marketing prowess, and the butt of endless dumb jokes about how tiring it is to watch a cartoon with your kids.
Granted, there have been surprises, like "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" going home with the win back in 2022, or when Hayao Miyazaki's "The Boy and the Heron" won last year. Still, the award has historically been rather predictable: a simple battle between the big American studios, and an award...

The Wild Robot made history for DreamWorks Animation on Thursday when it received three Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature (Chris Sanders and Jeff Hermann), Best Score (Kris Bowers), and Best Sound. That’s the most bids ever for a single film in the studio’s 30-year history.

“So many people work on these for such a long time, and this sort of recognition is just so wonderful.”

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here! The full list of noms for the 97th Academy Awards have been revealed, and “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” indeed performed well, given how they cleaned up at the Golden Globes (with four wins for the Jacques Audiard film and three for Brady Corbet’s). And so did that absolute blockbuster juggernaut “Wicked.”
“Emilia Pérez” scored 13 nods, tied with multiple other films such as “Gone with the Wind,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Oppenheimer” for the second-most of all time. This is the most noms a non-English language feature has ever received.
“The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each scored 10 nominations, showing the extraordinary momentum they’ve built across awards season — “Wicked” has now grossed almost $466 million domestically. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations.

Kieran Culkin, Conclave, Ariana Grande and more have been nominated for golden men. Here’s the list of Oscars 2025 nominations:
We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.
Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)
Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

French production and sales company Charades started getting involved in animation several years ago, working with films like Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai” (2018) and Jérémy Clapin’s “I Lost My Body” (2019), both of which received Oscar nominations. But with Gints Zilbalodis’ Golden Globe best animated feature winner “Flow” and Adam Elliot’s Annecy Cristal winner “Memoir of a Snail,” 2024 stands out as the company’s most successful year yet when it comes to releasing award-winning and profitable animated features.
Both “Flow” and “Memoir” have been omnipresent during this year’s awards season and look like favorites to score Oscar nominations. That would be impressive in any year, but even more so in one in which Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks all released box office hits that have already won the hearts of audiences around the world.

Content warning: the following discusses the death of a pet, so please proceed with caution.
At the time of writing, it's only been a few days since my family and I bid farewell to one of our dear beloved cats (who had been diagnosed with cancer a couple of months earlier). A grey and white sweetheart, he was a part of our lives for nearly 13 years. I've never met anyone, animal or human, who loved to be petted by and snuggle other cats and people as much as him (nor a cat who purred quite so loudly when he was happy). He was also a charming rascal and lovable weirdo who left us with countless anecdotes to regale ourselves with. To say my family and I are heartbroken would be putting it mildly.
In my sorrow, as I've always done whenever I lose someone dear to me, I've found myself...

Stop-motion films are by their nature some of the most delicate, analog creations that exist in a sharp-edged entertainment universe grappling with the impending impact of AI. This year two of these movies — “Memoir of a Snail” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” — are among the frontrunners in a group of films vying for top honors in the animated film category during awards season.
Both films are the result of painstaking work by leading filmmakers, but their journeys have been different. One is the part of a long tradition by a beloved British filmmaking team (Aardman) and the other is an indie film by a lauded auteur (Adam Elliot) from Australia.
Each film and the filmmakers behind them have already made a mark. “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” has earned seven Annie Awards noms including best feature. “Memoir of a Snail” has also been lauded, winning the Annecy Crystal Award,...
