An Australian film with a twist

I saw this film recently as part of it's Australian tour, in Adelaide. I must say, I was absolutely blown away. It was a beautiful story, that had my husband and I talking for the next few days after the screening. It deals with some controversial themes that reminds me more of a European art-house film than something you would expect to see in Australian cinema, yet at the same time it has a really earthy Australian quality. My parents saw it on the second screening in Adelaide, based on my recommendation, and they loved Henri Szeps (who has been in plenty of Australian films and shows, including Mother & Son) and Maria Venuti (who is unrecognisable!) A pleasant surprise.

    Surprise

Purchase a copy of the movie at the Dungog Film Festival today, without high expectations. Sort of reminded me of Eye of the Storm, only different. Shot in the Hunter Valley which makes it more interesting for me, everything about the finished product is excellent. All of the things that matter, storyline, cinematography, direction, editing and acting are first rate. All believable, and no plot holes to be seen. The story is basically about two men from different generations that connect, because of circumstances that they have to deal with, and have no control over. I am sorry that I missed a screening at my local cinema. Fingers crossed that it gets a theatre release in Australia.

    Unique and Powerful

A tremendously thought provoking and engaging film, from start to end. Fluent story line, beautiful cinematography, wonderful soundtrack and a spectacular cast. We bought a copy at the premiere, to ensure we had our own little piece of Australian movie history - and have watched it twice more since.

The themes that course through this film are edgy and at times disturbing and uncomfortable. At other times, they are 'burst at the seams' delightful, mesmerising and with great sentiment.

Maria Venuti, Henry Szeps and Shaun Goss play their remarkable characters with absolute grace and commitment. They embody the trials, history, pain and joy of their characters without faltering. Truly staggering performances by all.

A must watch for anyone who enjoys cinema with heart.

Very shocking twist with great acting....

Got this movie free on YT and decided to check it out. Had no idea what it was about. I am 60 now, so it's easier to relate to older folks struggling with health issues. The young actor who plays Steve knocked it out of the park, plus he was easy on the eyes. The shocking scene that unfolded in the kitchen was totally unexpected....and I must admit....not very believable. But this movie is a little gem that deals with topics generally not seen in films. Wish the older chap had been a tad better in shape and better looking even if older. As he was, he was too clownish to be the subject of any type of romantic encounter. But he played his part well.

    Unusual and touching

I just watched this on Bigpond movies not really expecting anything as I had never heard of it before, and it was thought provoking and touching. Not sure why such an average low rating on this site - although perhaps some people don't like some of the themes. Despite its dark nature at times, I found it surprisingly upbeat. Great cast too, especially the young lead who plays Steve. It also had a great soundtrack which helped set the tone of the film. It is a bit of a slow burner - I thought from the opening scenes it might be the usual Underbelly rip-off type Australian drama, but that's a bit of a trick as the film soon moves in a different direction. It's definitely a hard film to summarise - its quite a little story in some ways, but it really resonated.
