Director Phil Hawkins and producer Alexandra Bentley talk to us about their Ukti Talent Goes To Hollywood win and the experiences of the subsequent trip to Los Angeles to meet key figures to pitch their film Baptism – an adaptation of the Max Kinnings novel of the same name.
An armed group take control of a rush hour underground tube train. They blow a hole through the tunnel to release the water from an underground river they believe is blessed and will baptise the passengers of their sins. Ed Mallory, a blind hostage negotiator, has a race against time to try and talk down the hostage takers and save the lives of everyone onboard.
The interview was also an opportunity to discuss the wider role of Ukti and British filmmakers developing their products overseas. Here’s the teaser trailer they made that turned heads both in the UK and USA www.

FrightFest 2014 had relocated to the larger venue of Vue West End for its 15th annual outing, and was as full of original horror as always: everything from living room furnishings to sex aids used to scare viewers. "The Last Showing", shot in only three weeks' worth of nightshoots in a Manchester cinema, features horror-legend Robert Englund as Stuart, a staff member fired earlier in the day from his longterm job as a projectionist, and put in charge of customers' snacks instead. Humiliated by a prospective career of shovelling popcorn and pouring fizzy drinks, he starts to plan revenge after all, he's seen enough gory deaths on the job, hasn't he? So there's an unexpected night planned for both the brash young manager who demoted him and the loved-up young couple who come up for a midnight screening of classic "The Hills Have Eyes II"....

Having returned from the Moorish and Amazonian horrors to enter the multiplex – the home of the celluloid dream that has dispatched many a willing viewer to their homes to be terrified by creaking floorboards, so this week we find ourselves returning home.
In part two of our FrightFest special feature ‘Unwanted Guests’, HeyUGuys rendezvoused with director Simeon Halligan on the English-Scottish border to discuss his ‘Scottish referendum home invasion horror’, after which we stopped off to view a house just over the border.

How did you come to contribute your version of the home invasion film to the repertoire?
Ian Fenton wrote the script quite a long time ago. This was a good couple of years ago now, when there were not as many home invasion films around. So when we first started looking at the piece it was...

“The truth is I’m just an old veteran character actor” says Robert Englund as we sit down to discuss The Last Showing, his latest foray into genre cinema. To find one standing opposite the genial and softly-spoken man who devoured so many hours of sleep by searing to the mind the menacing image of claws piercing first the mattress and then the torso, can only be described as ‘surreal.’ As these words flow onto the page there is a realisation that the reason horror cinema earns our affection was so eloquently phrased by Emily Berrington when she said, “There is a desire to feel that tiny part of your mind that otherwise doesn’t get tapped into.” By touching our sensibilities in a way that we crave, these terrifying encounters remain some of the most evocative and defining moments of the human experience, and therein cinema is our fix.

Following in the footsteps of Peter Bogdanovich’s Stalker and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Dead End Drive-In, Phil Hawkins’ The Last Showing returns us from our adventures on the moors and in the claustrophobic confines of the jungle to turn the place where we appreciate the filmic dreams conjured up by filmmakers into a nightmarish and hellish place.
If back in the 1980’s Robert Englund rolled over sweet dreams like black storm clouds, then three decades later his eye has turned to the multiplex where we dare to dream and lose ourselves in worlds removed from our reality.
In a special four part feature, writer-director Phil Hawkins, producer Alexandra Baranska and lead actors Finn Jones and Emily Berrington offer a series of youthful perspectives from behind and in front of the camera, before Robert Englund takes the stage to present the cineaste behind the icon.

Sitting with Robert Englund deep in the bowels of a gilded London hotel, it becomes obvious just what a great storyteller he is. As he reminisces about his early acting career in such films as Five Easy Pieces or Hustle, or goes even further back to his childhood brushes with the horror genre, he talks in a soothing, sonorous voice that is a million miles away from his signature role of Freddy Krueger.

Shot right here in good old Blighty, The Last Showing is the latest in a relatively small line of horror movies set in the cinema, films such as Popcorn, Midnight Movie and Demons, films that I consider (especially in the case of Popcorn) some of my personal favourites. So how would Robert Englund’s latest foray into the horror genre fare?
The Last Showing tells the story of ageing projectionist Stuart Lloyd (Englund) who, feeling sidelined by the advances in technology and by the growing apathy he sees towards cinema at the multiplex he works at, seeks revenge on a generation that no longer requires his skills. In the Red Room with a Vue, the chorus of delighted FrightFester’s are set to join together in joyous song for the chorus of their clawed and shrivelled icon…
“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you.
Three, four, Better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix.
Seven, eight, Gonna stay up late.
Nine, ten, He’s back again.”
If life can be described as a disappointment, of a vortex of uncertainty, then the one constant is FILM4 FrightFest, which, like a beacon of light, guides us to safely towards a guaranteed trip of unadulterated pleasure into the Dark Heart of Cinema every August Bank Holiday.
So what news has fallen upon our ears to add a little more detail to what the landscape of FrightFest 15 looks like?

There have been relatively few horrors set in the cinema, unless you count that fourth-wall-breaking scene in Gremlins 2. But The Last Showing seeks to change all that, with Robert Englund playing the demented puppet master who turns a locked cinema into an impromptu horror movie set for two unfortunate punters. Have a look at the trailer here. brightcove.createExperiences();Englund plays a cinema projectionist who is laid off by the multiplex where he has worked for years. Furious and out for revenge, he traps a young couple in the cinema after hours and sets in motion a plot to make them the stars of a horror movie, with the CCTV cameras rolling and the stage set for a bloody finale. It may not involve Freddy Krueger, but we suspect there will be blood.Finn Jones and Emily Berrington play the couple, and director Phil Hawkins is calling the shots.

The first footage from The Last Showing comes by way of a teaser trailer, which you can now watch here. This is the film that stars Robert Englund has a mad, voyeuristic projectionist. The film was picked up for U.S. distro by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. We're still awaiting a release date, but I suspect we'll be hearing about one for a release this fall. Writer-director Phil Hawkins tells the story of a young couple, Martin (Finn Jones) and Allie (Emily Berrington), who have a night out at their local cinema. They become unwitting stars of their own horror story at the hands of Stuart (Englund), a disturbed projectionist.

Set to visit 16 cities in 2014, Wizard World’s plethora of comic book booths, clothing vendors, and impressive line-up of celebrities are always enough to sate the appetite of any pop culture enthusiast, but prior to their visit to Minneapolis May 2nd–4th, I was wondering how much horror would be had in the aisles within the Convention Center’s cavernous confines.
As it turns out, Wizard World had more than enough entertainment for horror fans to dig into, and they picked the perfect horror headliner for Wizard World Minneapolis: Robert Englund, best known as Freddy Krueger, the living legend of our nightmares and realities.
One of my first destinations upon entering Wizard World Minneapolis was Robert Englund’s booth. I weaved my way through a crowd of eye-grabbing cosplayers—Hellboy, Darth Maul, and a perfectly matched Spider-Man and Black Cat couple were of particular notice—before stepping in line to...

Cameras are everywhere. Privacy as we once knew it is a thing of the past, and at any moment you could end up being the star of your own viral clip or... or well... horror movie. That being said, a new horror film that exploits these ideas is on its way in The Last Showing.
Screen Daily reports that the Philm Company has raised the funds for its next feature, The Last Showing. Producers Phil Hawkins and Alexandra Baranska are currently in discussions with sales agents in the UK and Us and plan to take the film to Cannes. Baranska recently joined the company after working as a theatrical sales executive at 20th Century Fox UK.
The Last Showing was written by Hawkins, who will also direct, and centers on a recently demoted projectionist who traps a young couple inside a cinema with plans to use the CCTV cameras to create his own horror film.
