The Star Wars franchise has somewhat stagnated in recent years with some of its most high-profile projects failing critically and commercially. As a result, it is safe to say that the franchise needs an influx of new ideas, and exploring the tragic backstory of one important prequel trilogy character might be the way for the franchise to move forward.

While The Mandalorian and the shows adjacent to it have explored the era after Darth Vader’s return to the light side, the era before the prequel trilogy is ripe with storytelling opportunities. As a result, Kathleen Kennedy needs to develop a project focusing on the only character, who has a backstory as dark as Darth Vader that needs to be brought to life in the space opera franchise.

It's now been two years since Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi premiered Disney+ and Lucasfilm has finally named the mysterious Inquisitor who tracked down and attacked Ahsoka Tano in the series.
That story played out shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith, but contradicted E.K. Johnston's Ahsoka novel and seemed to suggest that Dave Filoni had no qualms about retconning or ignoring what happens in books or comics.
That was evident from how Tales of the Jedi changed everything from Ahsoka's first meeting with Bail Organa to how she got her "Fulcrum" codename.
Regardless, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, the new Star Wars Encyclopedia establishes that the mysterious villain is officially known as the "First Brother."
"One of Darth Vader's Force-attuned Jedi hunters," reads the official character description, "this Inquisitor is dispatched to follow a tip that a Jedi has appeared in a remote village.

The history of the Star Wars canon is quite lengthy and complicated. It all began with George Lucas’ films and expanded to include the Legends universe. However, when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, much of that was retconned and updated, with only the films and a few other works remaining part of the official Disney canon; everything else became non-canon.
While some elements from the old Legends universe have gradually been reintroduced into the current canon, Disney is focused on creating its own version of Star Wars. This means we can expect both new insights and some continuity challenges along the way. In this report, we’ll discuss a recent development that highlights both aspects.
Do you remember the mysterious Inquisitor Ahsoka Tano battled in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi? The latest Star Wars Encyclopedia has revealed more details about this Inquisitor, but it appears that this has led to some continuity problems!

The history of the Star Wars canon is a long and complex one, as you might imagine. It all started with Lucas’ films, then it evolved to include the Legends universe, but when Disney bought Lucasfilm, it was all retconned and revamped, with the cinematic works and only a few other ones remaining canon in the Disney era. Everything else became non-canon.
While some parts of the old Legends universe were slowly integrated into the current canon, Disney is building its own Star Wars canon, so it is only natural to expect both new revelations as well as some continuity issues from time to time. In this report, we are going to talk about a piece of news that is actually both.

This was a pleasant surprise that no one was expecting about Yoda when it came the the most recent Star Wars novel which is all about Mace Windu.
Via the YouTube channel Star Wars Explained, it's been revealed that Yoda's original Jedi master, N'Kata Del Gormo, from Star Wars Legends is canon again! This is thanks to an entry of the novel Star Wars Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss. There is a bit of a catch to this being "canon" though.
As Alex Damon describes in his video, even in the Extended Universe timeline, it was a legend that was told of Yoda's early days of training. Supposedly, he crashed landed on the planet in the Hysalria system which is where he met N'Kata Del Gormo. The Jedi Master took a young Yoda on as his padawan until Yoda would be rescued by the Republic later.

In 2022, Star Wars fans were met with the surprise hit animated series Tales of the Jedi in the style of its parent show, The Clone Wars. Veterans of the franchise might be familiar with the name of the newer series. However, some fans might not know this isn't the first time there has been a Tales series in a galaxy far, far away.
Let’s take a look at the original Tales of the Jedi.
Star Wars is a franchise with decades of stories across every medium imaginable. The saga is just three years away from celebrating half a century of storytelling. With an entire universe of works to read, it’s easy to gloss over the hidden gems from the past.
One of these tales comes in the form of a comic series from the 90s called Tales of the Jedi by the late great Tom Veitch and Kevin J. Anderson.

Ian McDiarmid's acting career stretches back to 1972 when he appeared in a production of "Hamlet" at the Open Space Theater in London. He continued a prolific stage career while simultaneously moving to film in 1976 with his cinematic debut "The Likely Lads," a bawdy comedy film. McDiarmid might first have been recognized by mainstream American audiences thanks to his appearance in Matthew Robbins' 1981 fantasy film "Dragonslayer," although he assured a permanent spot in the pop culture canon in 1983 when he appeared as the evil Emperor in Richard Marquand's "Return of the Jedi."
Because that film was part of the "Star Wars" series, McDiarmid might have been at peace with the fact that he'd likely appear in future sequels. It would take another 16 years, but McDiarmid returned as a young version of the Emperor in George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace." That film was a prequel...

The Star Wars franchise started its Hollywood journey back in 1977 with the George Lucas-helmed movie. Since then, it has produced many more projects, including live-action and animation, for both TV and movie. Its latest presentation is The Acolyte, a Disney+ series set at the end of the High Republic era. It happens all before the main story of the saga starts with the prequel series, and then the Skywalker series.

The Acolyte has been getting a lot of criticism since it premiered. For its story, characters, and a lot of other parts of the show that fans have been less than impressed with. “Size matters not,” Yoda once told us. And so, while Tales Of The Empire — the second anthology of canonical Star Wars animated shorts, following the 2022 collection Tales Of The Jedi — consists of just six bite-sized instalments, running between 10 and 15 minutes each, it’s not to be overlooked. This is short, powerful, punchy storytelling in the Star Wars galaxy, hooking onto under-explored characters and offering narrative morsels that thread together decades of disparate threads.
Last time, the focus was on the fall of Count Dooku and pivotal moments in the life of Ahsoka Tano. Here, the first three episodes are devoted to Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) — the Beskar-spear-swinging Magistrate first introduced in The Mandalorian Season 2, later revealed as a former Dathomir witch intent on heralding the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in Ahsoka – as she loses everything, and finds new purpose in the embrace of the Empire.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire releases on May 4, 2024.
The Lucasfilm dive into Dave Filoni‘s most cherished characters has frustrated some fans. Many loved Ahsoka and the relaunch of Clone Wars adjacent shows. However, others have grown weary of over-using these characters, specifically if they do not have prior knowledge. In many ways, Tales of Empire exists because of the hardcore fans who love Clone Wars and Rebels-era characters. However, the expanding universe has paid dividends already, with greenlit shows and movies based on characters Filoni created from scratch, or co-created.
Yet the question about including more Filoni characters has become a hot-button issue in the fandom. Unlike Tales of the Jedi, this series focuses on more obscure figures within the larger Star Wars canon. Without having seen Ahsoka or deep into Clone Wars, you might never have seen these figures. The results have been inconsistent – providing a backstory...

One of the best and most devastating moments in "Star Wars" is Order 66 in "Revenge of the Sith." To close out the Clone Wars, the clone troopers that have fought beside the Jedi turn and shoot their commanders in the back, on orders from Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious.
The most memorable death is Jedi Aayla Secura on the jungle planet Felucia, shot in the back by Clone Commander Bly and his brothers-in-arms. In one draft of the script (but not the finished film), Aayla is scouting for enemy droids and asking Bly for his input before he shoots, emphasizing her being taken by surprise. The Felucia scene would also feature Bly and the clones fragging Jedi Barriss Offee, but this was deleted, so the "Clone Wars" and "Tales of the Jedi" cartoons took that character in another direction.
That wasn't the only change to the scene. You see, in "Revenge of the Sith,...

A second season of Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi was first announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, and fans have since been eager to see which characters this season’s installments would be about. Would we see more stories from Ahsoka and Count Dooku, or different characters entirely? Nearly a year after it was first announced, we have a first look at the new season, now named Tales of the Empire.
Tales of the Empire will focus on the stories of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka’s Lady Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and, to the delight of many, former Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger), who was last seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The first trailer for Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Tales of the Empire has dropped. The new animated series for Disney+ teases many characters, including the return of a fan favorite.
Star Wars is returning to when the Empire ruled the galaxy with an iron fist. What few Jedi are left are hunted or converted by the Grand Inquisitor. Elsewhere, new villains are forged by the fires ignited by the Separatists during the Clone Wars.
Ok, I’m somewhat interested. Barriss Offee’s storyline is finally being expanded. The last we saw of the former Jedi was when she was being dragged off to prison for her crimes and betrayal of the Order.
However, the biggest thing that caught my attention was the return of General Grievous. The character’s strongest appearance in Star Wars media was always in projects outside of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

As Yoda himself once said, "Always two there are, no more, no less… A master and an apprentice." That might now apply to animated anthologies that tie into other in-universe Star Wars stories, because following 2022's Tales Of The Jedi, we now have its dark twin, Tales Of The Empire. Check out the trailer for the new series:
Created and written once again by Dave Filoni (who also serves as supervising director), this, as the title might lead you to believe, features stories from the point of view of the Galactic Empire. We follow two warriors on divergent paths in different eras. One, Morgan Elsbeth channels the loss of everything and everyone she loves into a seething anger that offers the Imperial forces (especially Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn) something they can exploit.
There is also former Jedi Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger) who is forced to do whatever it takes to survive a rapidly changing galaxy.

There are two sides to every story, but nothing is ever really black and white, good versus evil, or even Jedi versus Empire.

Lucasfilm has revealed the first teaser trailer for "Star Wars: Tales of the Empire." Though not exactly a season 2, per se, this serves as a follow-up to 2022's acclaimed "Tales of the Jedi." That show was a series of animated shorts that focused on two interwoven tales of Jedi at crucial times in their development, namely Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku before he fell to the dark side. Similarly, this new series will be focusing on two different figures within the Empire: Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee. Check it out for yourself above.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 47 years since we first witnessed the adventures of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but across the nine-movie Skywalker saga, two standalone movies, a multitude of TV series, and one questionable Holiday Special, we’ve learned it’s a big ol’ galaxy out there. With enough characters to fill a Death Star, it’s inevitable that not every player in this grand space opera would get the same attention as Luke, Han, and Leia.
In fact, the franchise has allowed a few characters to slip to the sidelines. From major players who were discarded into the trash compactor to those who didn’t resonate with fans and were quietly pushed to the side, here are 12 Star Wars characters who deserved better.

Despite our best predictions with our 2024 TV preview, perhaps a little on the early side, when Disney finally revealed its 2024 Disney+ slate, in spite of four Lucasfilm projects on the docket for this year, Tony Gilroy’s “Andor” starring Diego Luna wasn’t one of them. Instead, Disney promised Leslye Headland’s “The Acolyte,” seemingly scheduled for June of this year, Jon Watts’ “Skeleton Crew,” plus “The Bad Batch,” which just finished up season three, and “Tales Of The Jedi” season two.

"Star Wars" has one of the vastest universes in fiction -- one that is ever expanding, incredibly detailed, and fleshed-out, in addition to feeling lived-in. The thing that makes this franchise and fictional universe unique is that unlike Tolkien's Legendarium, or, say, the "One Piece" world, "Star Wars" is far from the work of a single person, or even a single team.
The "Star Wars" universe has grown and expanded piece by piece over nearly 50 years, with new artists coming in and building on the surprising success of George Lucas' original 1977 film. The original trilogy introduced a fleshed-out world with a long history that was barely hinted at, with places, people, and concepts that other writers in what was known as the Expanded Universe (now Legends) could expand on and explain. Of course, we've seen many elements from the Expanded Universe become part of the post-Disney canon in recent years,...

"Star Wars," much like the superhero genre, thrives in animation. It is in this medium that the potential for storytelling of the galaxy far, far away truly becomes apparent. Whether it is the larger-than-life feats of power of Genndy Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" micro-series, the expansive worldbuilding and cinematic visuals of "The Clone Wars," or the explosion of varied visuals and stories bringing different cultures to the franchise in "Star Wars: Visions," animation can bring out the best in "Star Wars."
After helping create "The Clone Wars," "Rebels," and "Tales of the Jedi," Dave Filoni helped give us the first "Star Wars" series centered squarely on the faceless guys that fought alongside the Jedi (and eventually betrayed them) with the war thriller "The Bad Batch." After three seasons of exploring how the clone army of the Republic became the poor-sighted stormtroopers, as well as planting the seeds for Palpatine's obsession with cloning,...

The state of the Star Wars franchise in cinemas remains a bit unclear. Earlier this month, Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, a movie to be directed by Jon Favreau based on the popular Disney+ series and that will set our lovable father and son duo on a brand-new adventure. It’s being fast-tracked into production this year, which suggests it’ll be the first new Star Wars movie to come out since The Rise of Skywalker bowed in Dec. 2019.
Interestingly, before that surprise announcement last week, it really seemed like the first movie on Lucasfilm’s docket was the untitled Rey movie, which is set to pick up 15 years after the events of the Sequel Trilogy. It’ll bring back Daisy Ridley to the galaxy far, far away to “build the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her,” as...
