In a story about transformation, the engineers of change can be many. Take “Emilia Pérez,” the award-winning musical film about a Mexican drug lord, Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, who hires a lawyer to help facilitate not just a disappearance but also gender-affirming surgery that will transform the brutish cartel leader into an elegant socialite, Emilia Pérez.

The transformation from Manitas to Emilia is the dramatic center of the film and the product of a collaboration that included Boris Razon, writer of the 2018 novel “Écoute,” on which the film is loosely based; screenwriter and director Jacques Audiard; actress Karla Sofía Gascón; and the below-the-line talent responsible for the look of both Manitas and Emilia, particularly costume designer Virginie Montel and makeup department head Julia Floch-Carbonel.

“They allowed me to go deeper into the character and make it feel real,” Gascón said of Montel and Floch-Carbonel.

How does such a genre-defying film like Jacques Audiard’s transgender Mexican cartel musical Emilia Pérez come into being? In this case, it went through a uniquely adventurous development process.

The acclaimed Netflix film, which was loosely inspired by a chapter in Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute, originally began as two distinct projects, both written by Audiard and titled Emilia Pérez: an opera libretto to be performed for the stage and a gritty crime movie the director envisioned shooting on location in Mexico.

The EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival has unveiled the first batch of movies selected for its 2024 main competition — a trio of aesthetically adventurous stories about women.

The selection includes Jacques Audiard’s Cannes jury prize winner Emilia Pérez, Magnus von Horn’s arthouse drama The Girl with the Needle, and Rachel Morrison’s boxing biopic The Fire Inside. Camerimage organizers will unveil the rest of this year’s competition selection — which usually totals around a dozen movies — in the days ahead.

As previously announced, this year’s Camerimage competition will be assessed by a panel led by jury president and two-time Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.

There were few films out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival that generated as much buzz (and sparked as much discussion) as Jacques Audiard’s musical drama. The film ultimately won the Jury Prize, with its female ensemble collectively awarded the Best Actress prize. And now, as the film approaches its Netflix premiere on Nov. 13, you can watch the brand-new trailer below.

The film, which is France’s entry for the Best International Feature Film Oscar, is described officially as “an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations” (you definitely get that from the trailer). In the movie a “fearsome cartel leader Emilia (K Gascón) enlists Rita (Saldaña), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.” In addition to the aforementioned performers, the movie also stars Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez.

“Emilia Perez” will screen at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, ending a whirlwind festival run that started way back in the spring when the ambitious project premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. To unofficially celebrate the milestone, Netflix debuted the full final trailer for the Jacques Audiard film, one that most awards experts expect to receive several top nominations, including Best Picture.

Awards season is closer than you think, and Netflix is kicking off the fall corridor with a first look at the streamer’s major contender “Emilia Pérez.” The “musical epic” film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this May and took home the Cannes Jury Prize as well as a historic Best Actress prize that was shared between the film’s three leading ladies: Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldańa and Karla Sofía Gascón.

European pay-tv operator Canal+ has launched a branded streaming service in Hungary, the latest in a series of international launches that also includes Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and most recently the Netherlands.

The Hungarian launch is in partnership with local pay TV operator 4iG Group.

Jacques du Puy, CEO Canal+ International, said: “I am very pleased with the launch of our services in Hungary, which illustrates our strategy to digitalize our offerings, further strengthening our position in Europe. Hungary is a dynamic market for SVOD services, and Canal+ is willing to take a significant place on that market. 4iG is the relevant partner to support this launch.”

Canal+ content has been available in Hungary since 2021 through platform Direct One, which was previously branded as Upc Direct.

As part of the Canal+ agreement, 4iG will add Direct One’s 155,000 subscribers to its Digi service next year.

The Oscar-winning actress will star as Celine Dumont, a savvy operator from a storied European family, in the fourth installment of the Apple TV+ drama series. Cotillard joins returning cast members Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Jon Hamm and Nicole Beharie.

Season 4 will pick up in the aftermath of the Season 3 finale, which saw Alex (Aniston) attempt to halt the acquisition — and impending dissolution — of Uba by suggesting a merger between Uba and Nbn.

The Spanish-language musical crime comedy, starring Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Édgar Ramirez, has been one of the buzziest projects to come to market in Cannes this year, with multiple U.S. distributors offering on the film since it premiered at the weekend. Netflix has swooped in for North American and UK rights to the original title in a deal that we’re hearing is in the high seven figures. The pact is in its closing stages.

You know a movie has left a big impression at Cannes when the applause explodes in the press room as the cast files in. Such was the case Sunday morning for Emila Pérez.

Jacques Audiard’s latest movie follows Rita (Zoe Saldaña), an overqualified and undervalued lawyer who goes from repping guilty criminals to a cartel leader Manitas (Karla Sofía Gascón) who hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being.

Gascón, who is trans, today spoke about the prejudice she has faced in the Latin America and Hispanic communities.

“People who are trans are subjected to insults or death threats because they exist. In Mexico, there are harsh phrases when addressing trans people. It can be gross,” the actress explained.

“I think we should be taken for what we are.

Jacques Audiard returned to Cannes on Saturday night to introduce the world to Emilia Perez, which received a rapturous response from the audience, who gave it a nine-minute standing ovation. After Audiard took the mic to speak in French, the standing ovation resumed for another minute or so.

The 10th film from the French auteur — his sixth film in the main competition — stars Zoe Saldaña as a frustrated lawyer, Selena Gomez as a drug lord’s wife, Édgar Ramírez as a dangerous love interest and Karla Sofía Gascón as the cartel kingpin who longs to escape a life of crime and become the woman he’s always dreamed of becoming. And surprise — it’s a musical.

As the credits roled, there were whoops and hollers and shouts of “Bravo,” even before the lights came up. Saldaña and Gascón were in tears, while Gomez was visibly moved, covering her face.
