When A.A. Milne's 1926 children's novel "Winnie-the-Pooh" finally entered the public domain in 2022, filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield was waiting in the wings. For many decades, Winnie-the-Pooh was owned by Disney, and the corporate megalith had always been protective about its property. Pooh was a gentle and whimsical extension of the Disney brand. When Disney lost exclusive rights, Frake-Waterfield elected to shove his thumb in Disney's eye and make "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey," an incredibly cheap and horrendously bad slasher movie wherein everyone's favorite silly-old-bear was reimagined as an eight-foot murdering lummox.
Although "Blood and Honey" is a terrible movie, curious audiences attended out of morbid curiosity, and the film ended up grossing $7.7 million on a paltry $100,000 budget. Its success inspired Frake-Waterfields to not only make "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2," but also to announce a whole spate of other public domain childhood classics reinterpreted as cheap slasher movies. If all goes to plan,...

Popeye The Slayer Man, is all set to get you screaming(Photo Credit – YouTube)
Popeye the Sailor Man is a cartoon icon known for his charm, spinach-fueled strength, and heroics. He has been a cultural legend since his comic strip debut in 1929. Created by Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye became a symbol of determination, often saving the day with his mighty forearms and trademark charm while providing the viewers with their daily dose of laughter.
This beloved character is taking an unexpected, spine-chilling turn in Popeye the Slayer Man. This upcoming horror film reimagines him as a vengeful slasher stalking his prey in an abandoned spinach factory. This aligns with a recent trend in horror cinema, where nostalgic childhood characters are being reinterpreted in terrifying new ways. From the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey slasher adaptation to this, filmmakers are mining familiar childhood figures and turning them into nightmare fuel.

Then, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios officially announced that this cinematic universe, which is being referred to as The Twisted Childhood Universe, is building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, which will be released in 2025. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey horror crossover Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble is bringing together characters like Pooh, Bambi, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan from the Twisted Childhood Universe. The movie is set to begin filming in March.
While details about the story are still a secret, the slasher film will show the monsters teaming up to face survivors from previous movies.
The franchise’s first installment, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, was met with a negative critical reception and a more mixed fan reception, though it turned a profit at the box office.
The movie’s quality was called into question, with criticisms directed at the script, acting, cinematography, and lack of humor; it also received five Golden Raspberry Awards. In response to this, Frake-Waterfield stated that he is determined to raise the standard with the future films in the franchise.

It’s trendy these days to take a character from popular children’s stories and given them a horror twist. Lately we’ve been hearing about horror movies based on the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Bambi, Pinocchio, Three Blind Mice, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears – and when one set of filmmakers decides to make a horror film featuring a beloved kids’ story character, there are sometimes multiple other sets of filmmakers working on horror films that center on the same character, as evident from the fact that there are actually several Mickey Mouse horror films making their way out into the world. Another example is Popeye. Earlier this month, it was announced that Alpeke Entertainment is working on a slasher horror comedy called Shiver Me Timbers, which puts a horror twist on Popeye the Sailor. Since then, our friends at Bloody Disgusting...

Update: So, we appear to have mixed up two Popeye horror flicks! We assumed Shiver Me Timbers was the ITN Studios project we told you about last week, but apparently it's a completely separate movie.
Following a recent first look via some promo stills, the first trailer for ITN Studios' Popeye horror parody - which is officially titled Shiver Me Timbers - has been released online, and it looks... about how you'd expect!
The success of the recent low-budget Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey has led to a number of classic animated tales being given a horror makeover, and the spinach-chomping sailor is the latest beloved character to be turned into a bloodthirsty killer for an upcoming indie project.
Described as a "raunchy and gory slasher," it's worth clarifying that ITN’s movie is not connected to the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse."
Stephen Murphy is set to play the title character.

2024 is nearly over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. The Copyright Gods didn’t quite know what was coming when their laws returned beloved childhood characters into the public domain. How could they have guessed, for example, that when the first Winnie the Pooh book entered the public domain in 2022, enterprising filmmakers would warp the property into Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey?
Turns out the denizens of 100-Acre Wood weren’t so thrilled to be abandoned by Christopher Robin, with ravenous versions of Pooh and Piglet taking it out on the young man’s college pals. As one might imagine, the reviews weren’t great (3 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but the money was, inspiring a Blood and Honey 2 that made even more cash.
Those successes inspired the same filmmakers to create horror films based on available Disney favorites like Bambi and Peter Pan. And why stop there — enterprising Canadians went after the Mouse himself, creating a horror-comedy version...

Pinocchio: Unstrung First Look Spotlights Impressive Animatronic Puppet As Robert Englund Joins Cast
The original Pinocchio story is a lot darker than you might think if you've only seen the classic Disney animated movie, but the next instalment in the Twisted Childhood Universe (Aka the "Poohniverse") will take things to a whole new level.
A first official look at Pinocchio: Unstrung has been revealed via some promo stills and a behind-the-scenes video showcasing an impressive practical Pinocchio puppet, which was created by Todd Masters, the Emmy-winning VFX artist known for Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight and Child’s Play.
Helmed by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and produced by Scott Jeffrey under their Jagged Edge Productions banner, Pinocchio: Unstrung follows "young James as he learns of his grandfather Geppetto’s deadly secret: Pinocchio."
Variety reports that the project has added a true horror icon, with Freddy Krueger himself, A Nightmare on Elm Street's Robert Englund, set to star in an undisclosed role.

The 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie officially became public domain earlier this year many have decided to take advantage of the situation by doing their own interpretations. One of the more popular paths recently is using a public domain property for the horror genre. We all remember the amount of publicity Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey got when it was first announced.
While multiple horror-themed movies, both released and announced, have featured the classic mouse, from Mickey’s Mouse Trap to Steamboat Willie to The Return of Steamboat Willie, there have also been instances of him appearing in horror games such as Infestation Origins (formerly titled Infestation 88). Now, another game seems to be taking a darker take on the iconic mouse.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023, so not only did the sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 have a substantially higher budget, that success opened the door to an entire cinematic universe that will consist of at least one more Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio: Unstrung. Now, Variety reports that a pair of genre icons have just joined the cast of Pinocchio: Unstrung, as the film is set to star A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Robert Englund and Rob Zombie regular Richard Brake! Freddy Krueger has joined the cast of the next IP-smashing slasher from the makers of microbudget hit “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.”
Well, almost. Robert Englund, who famously played the murderous horror icon across the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films, will star in “Pinocchio: Unstrung,” the latest standalone feature to join the so-called low-budget Twisted Childhood Universe. Richard Brake, a regular collaborator with Rob Zombie and whose horror credits also include the likes of “Barbarian” and “Mandy,” has also joined the film in the key role of Geppetto.
Meanwhile, Variety is able to reveal a first-look of the actual — and fully practical — Pinocchio doll, created by Todd Masters, the Emmy-winning special effects artist known for “Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight” and “Child’s Play” (he also worked on “Dune: Part Two”).

Filmmaker Scott Jeffrey has confirmed that the upcoming horror movie based on J.M. Barrie’s classic story Peter Pan will hit theaters in the first few months of 2025. Titled “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare,” the film is the third installment in the Twisted Childhood Universe franchise.

In the beginning there was Winnie The Pooh: Blood & Honey. Then, there was Winnie the Pooh_: Blood & Honey 2_. And now, as Rhys Frake-Waterfield — the Kevin Feige of effed-up fairytale films — envisioned back in early 2023, the Twisted Childhood Universe of public domain based horrors is set to expand with Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare. Written and directed by Scott Jeffrey (not to be confused with Muppet Babies helmsman Jeffrey Scott), the Tcu's latest childhood crusher is set to see Martin Portlock bring to our screens a slightly more murderous version of the boy who never grew up than Disney's take on the J.M. Barrie fairytale. Check out the bloody first trailer below;
Welp — we don't know about his shadow, but it sure does look like our pal Peter has found his dark side here! Whilst theorists have long contested a dark truth at the heart of Barrie's book (that...

Steamboat Willie might not be as impressive as Disney‘s feature films, but it paved the way for so much that came afterward. It also paved the way for a new pair of horror films about Mickey Mouse, including Screamboat, a film that features a Steamboat Willie-style Mickey as a cold-blooded killer. Screamboat is part of one of the oddest horror trends to come down the pipeline in some time.
‘Steamboat Willie’ era Mickey Mouse joins Winnie-the Pooh in a horror trend
Mickey is one of the most famous characters to originate in film, so Disney had every reason to keep him under copyright for as long as possible. Now, the cartoon Steamboat Willie has fallen into the public domain, meaning that anyone can use Mickey’s original design for anything. Multiple filmmakers have decided that the beloved rodent needs a horror makeover, so we’re getting two slasher...

The Poohniverse has struck again, and this time, the situation seems to be more grave than ever before. After the slasher-horror pieces from the Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu) that started with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and followed by its sequel, this next film seems to hold an equally carnage vision as it strikes yet another fan-favorite character: Peter Pan.

This is because this very beloved character, who pretty much shaped a lot of kids’ childhood, has been transformed into a much grittier and gorier version in the upcoming Neverland Nightmare. And, as things get out of hand for this alternate crossover universe that reimagines beloved fairy-tale characters as horror movie villains, fans can’t help but express severe disapproval.

While most of us grew up watching Disney’s interpretation of classic children’s folktales, since the original stories have hit the public domain, it’s now fair game for anyone to use these characters. This eventually contributed to the creation of the critically panned Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, but thanks to the internet discourse surrounding it, the movie became a financial hit.

With its sequel also becoming a financial success, which was a slight improvement over the first one, the creators are now setting their eyes on Peter Pan.

With the original iterations of several Disney characters now in the public domain, the door has been opened to parodies featuring twisted new versions of them.
One of the most attention-grabbing parodies is the upcoming horror movie Screamboat which, in case it wasn't obvious, is based on the iconic Mickey Mouse predecessor, Steamboat Willie.
Directed by Steven Lamorte, who previously helmed 2022's The Mean One, a horror based on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the teaser trailer suggests the project will make slasher fans happy.
According to the synopsis, "[Screamboat] follows a group of New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare."
You can watch the newly released trailer below (via FearHQ.com) ahead of the movie's planned 2025 release.

Production on “Screamboat” is chugging right along.

“Our movie, while it is bloody and gory and raunchy, it really is a love letter to this character,” said Lamorte, who co-wrote the script with Matthew Garcia-Dunn. “As 2024 got closer and closer, it seemed like the copyright was really going to lapse. Frake-Waterfield tells Bd, “The film will embrace practical effects at every opportunity, ranging from the doll itself to the title card of the film. We’ve had Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey as well as its sequel, and a horror movie centred around Bambi is on the way. But the film that must really piss Disney off is The Mouse Trap. Filmed as Mickey’s Mouse Trap, which was probably a bit too much for the lawyers to allow, it turns their iconic rodent, or someone dressed him, into a psychotic killer.
A film like The Mouse Trap is only possible because the original Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie, finally slipped out from under copyright protection and into the public domain. So now Mickey, or the version of him in that cartoon, is fair game for other filmmakers. Something that a Star Wars-style open text crawl reminds the viewer of.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 3's release and cast remain a mystery, but here's what we know.
The first two Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey movies began after the 1926 book based on the character entered the public domain in the United States in January 2022. This gave Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios free reign to develop the character however they pleased as they went the horror route.
After abandoning anthropomorphic versions of Winnie the Pooh and his friends years earlier for a normal life, Christopher Robin discovers they've become feral.

‘The Mouse Trap’ Trailer: Mickey Mouse Is a Serial Killer in an Inevitable Public Domain Horror Film
Well, we all knew this was coming: Disney has gone dark thanks to “Steamboat Willie” now being in the public domain.
The earliest version of the conglomerate’s iconic Mickey Mouse character is now up for grabs — and the team behind the upcoming horror film “The Mouse Trap” wasted no time reimagining Mickey as a murderer.
Jamie Bailey directs the twisted take on the mouse with Simon Phillips playing the serial killer version of Mickey. The teaser trailer was released January 1 to announce the project just as the character entered the public domain and legally could be incorporated in Disney-less films.
The official synopsis reads: “It’s Alex’s 21st Birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.

Anyone who enjoys having their childhood memories warped will be glad to hear that "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2" is now available to watch at home. When the original "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" debuted in 2023, there was significant buzz around the film. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield had taken advantage of A.A. Milne's beloved bear transitioning into the public domain, and promptly set about trying to ruin everyone's childhood with a twisted take on the material that saw Pooh reimagined as a slasher killer. That all amounted to a film with a 3% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Indeed, we at /Film dubbed "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" a humorless bloodbath. But Frake-Waterfield didn't let the bad reviews stop him and a sequel was quickly churned out. "Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2" arrived in 2024 and saw Pooh joined by more of his bloodthirsty chums, including Owl and Tigger.

As one of the most well-known, evergreen classic stories, the tale of Cinderella has gone through numerous retellings, which has added to its universal appeal. However, Director Louisa Warren’s brutal, dark, straight-up body horror-themed reimagining of the story Cinderella’s Curse is something we could never have come up with in our wildest dreams. While the core essence of the story remains largely unchanged throughout the majority of the movie, the few alterations establish it as more of an adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie in the medieval fantasy setting of Cinderella.
If you are among the extreme minority of viewers who actually liked the twisted vision behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, then Cinderella’s Curse is right up your alley; only this one has much better treatment in terms of the narrative than that of Winnie the abomination. But if you aren’t a fan of the idea...

It’s an interesting time to be a horror fan. From artsy genre mashups to the modern slasher renaissance, it appears that there’s a scary movie for nearly every kind of viewer these days. Personally, I think one of the most fascinating genre trends in recent years has to be the rise of horror flicks inspired by childhood stories that only just entered the public domain – a movement that was kick-started by Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023.

The filmmakers behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are expanding their public domain horror universe with a handful of upcoming “Poohniverse” movies, including Bambi: The Reckoning, Pinocchio: Unstrung, and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare. Bloody Disgusting has exclusively scored the poster art for Neverland Nightmare today.
Scott Jeffrey directs Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, now in post-production. Find the poster below and read on for everything you need to know about the Peter Pan horror movie.
The Jagged Edge Productions film — being sold by ITN Studios — follows Wendy Darling as she strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from “the clutches of the evil Peter Pan.” Along the way she meets Tinkerbell, who in this twisted version of the story will be seen taking heroine, convinced that it’s pixie dust.
Jeffrey tells us, “This is tonally an extremely darker film to Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey. When dealing with children being abducted,...

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023… and sure, the movie racked up the Razzies, but it’s money that matters, and that’s why Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was made and given a theatrical release earlier this year. We know the Australia-based company Umbrella Entertainment will be giving the film a special edition Blu-ray release next month, and now it has been announced (via Collider) that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on June 26th!
