It shouldn't come as a shock to learn that the top rated movie on Netflix at the moment is a holiday flick, but you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that the festive rom-com drawing the most eyeballs on the streamer right now, "Our Little Secret," features Lindsay Lohan. The "Mean Girls" star has been making a bit of a comeback of late via Netflix movies like "Falling for Christmas" and "Irish Wish," but she's earning particularly enthusiastic notices from critics for her portrayal of Avery, whose visit to her potential in-laws for Christmas gets complicated when she discovers her significant other's sister is dating her ex-boyfriend Logan (Ian Harding).
It's a recipe for yuletide disaster, and director Stephen Herek (the kids hockey classic "The Mighty Ducks") serves it up with all the hackneyed trimmings people seem to crave from holiday movies at this time of year. There's nothing wrong with that,...

‘Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi’ will begin filming soon. The upcoming ‘Dawn of the Jedi’, a prequel set earlier than any other movie in the series, will be directed by James Mangold. The script is co-written by Mangold and Beau Willimon (known for Andor and House of Cards).
Mangold has been nominated for two Oscars: one for writing the 2017 film ‘Logan’ and another as a producer on ‘Ford v. Ferrari’, which was up for Best Picture. Mangold has also directed ‘The Wolverine’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.’
According to Empire magazine (via World of Reel and ScreenRant), ‘Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi’ is set to start filming soon. In an interview promoting his new Bob Dylan biopic, ‘A Complete Unknown’, starring Timothée Chalamet, Mangold mentioned that after wrapping up work on that project, which is already getting Oscar attention, he will begin shooting the new Star Wars movie.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and 2023’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017), “Dunkirk” (2018) and, to some extent, “Oppenheimer” (2024) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity...

New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.
Here’s a look at the brand new trailer.
Wow – he sounds just like Dylan, especially with the singing.
James Mangold has directed two biopic movies. Walk The Link (2005), the story of Johnny Cash starring Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. The...

The 2007 Western film “3:10 to Yuma” will become available to stream on Netflix starting September 1st. Directed by James Mangold, the movie stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in a intense story of an outlaw being transported by train. Though it received praise from critics, “3:10 to Yuma” struggled at the box office. Now on Netflix, new audiences can discover this complex morality tale.
The movie is a remake of the 1957 film based on a short story. It follows rancher Dan Evans, played by Bale, who reluctantly agrees to help place the notorious criminal Ben Wade, played by Crowe, on a train to go to trial. However, Wade’s gang is chasing them in hopes of setting their leader free. Throughout the dangerous journey, Evans and Wade develop a complicated relationship as one guards the other.
Both Bale and Crowe delivered praised performances, with Crowe winning an Oscar previously for his role in “Gladiator.

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be arriving on Christmas Day in the US.
When it was revealed last month (alongside a trailer for the upcoming film) that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown would be arriving in cinemas in 2024, a few eyebrows went up. The project began filming back in March (according to IMDb) and wrapped near the end of June.
Still, Mangold can be a quick worker when it comes to the post-production stage of filmmaking, depending on the film of course. Whilst Le Mans ’66 took a year to make it through the editing room, his other musical biopic – 2005’s Walk The Line – released in cinemas six months after entering the post-production phase and it looks like the filmmaker will be doing the same again here.

Despite having been a part of some of the biggest franchises ever — “X-Men,” “Indiana Jones,” and soon, “Star Wars” — James Mangold is making his disdain for “multi-movie universe-building” known.
The “A Complete Unknown” writer/director told Rolling Stone that he doesn’t “do multiverses” when it comes to his own filmography. Mangold was asked if he considered re-casting Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash in Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” as Mangold directed Phoenix as the singer in 2005 Oscar-winning film “Walk the Line.”
“I don’t do multiverses,” Mangold said. “But beyond that Johnny Cash was like, 30 [during the ‘A Complete Unknown’ era]. I love Joaquin, but he’s not 30, or whatever Johnny was at this moment.”
Instead, Mangold reunites with his “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” actor Boyd Holbrook, who will portray Cash alongside Timothée Chalamet’s Dylan.

We just got our first look at Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in the new movie “A Complete Unknown“. The teaser trailer was just released and it gives us a sneak peek at Chalamet’s transformation into the young folk singer.
The trailer starts with some scenes of Chalamet walking around New York City in the 1960s. You see him pass by famous spots like the Chelsea Hotel. Then he starts performing one of Dylan’s most well-known songs, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. Even cooler, it seems like Chalamet is actually singing the song himself in the footage. That adds another level of realism to his portrayal of Dylan.
The movie is directed by James Mangold, who’s done other big films like “Logan” and “Ford v Ferrari”. It focuses on Dylan as a 19-year-old who moves from Minnesota to New York and skyrockets to fame in the folk music world.

There are no sure things in this world, but a Joseph Kosinski-directed, Jerry Bruckheimer-produced sports flick set in the breakneck 200-mph world of Formula 1 racing sounds about as can't-miss as mega-budget studio movies get. Throw in Brad Pitt starring as a veteran driver seeking redemption and a supporting cast of Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem and the should-be-a-star-by-now Damson Idris (the breakout lead of John Singleton's FX series "Snowfall"), and Warner Bros. has to be expecting a global box-office windfall out of "F1" in 2025.
But aren't auto racing films a commercial crap shoot if the cars aren't animated or capable of gravity-defying maneuvers while their drivers prattle about the importance of family? Though "Ford v. Ferrari" was a hit for 20th Century Fox in 2019, moviegoers, particularly in the U.S., failed to turn out in droves for the likes of "Gran Turismo," "Logan Lucky," and "Rush." No...

Marvel’s next Captain America film is getting expensive, and it sounds as if sizeable reshoots are underway – costing up to $100m alone.
While studios tend to be reticent to publicise the actual production budget for their movies, some kind of alchemy still brings together at least a rough number. Take the original Iron Man movie for instance. That’s now believed to have cost in the region of $140m all in, with the price rumoured at the time of its release said to be closer to $100m.
What does seem very clear is that arguably 2025’s biggest Marvel film, Captain America: Brave New World, is going to be a lot, lot more than that. In fact, believe a fresh report that’s popped up over at World Of Reel, and the reshoot costs along for the film are really quite alarming.
None of this has been confirmed, and none of it is our money.

Christian Bale is known throughout the Hollywood industry for his adaptability to characters. As a method actor, he takes every role that comes his way and magnifies the significance of the character through his depiction. His skills as an actor have always been enough to mesmerize the audience regardless of the film’s success. Having done so many films, his range incorporates some of the most contrasting characters.

The Planet Of The Apes franchise has seen five feature films from the original movies, one from Tim Burton in 2001, a successful prequel series starring the amazing Andy Serkis, a live-action television series, an animated Saturday morning series, comic books, trading cards, action figures, you name it.
50 years ago in 1974 20th Century Fox came up with the clever idea to offer all five movies at once to select movie theaters, and program them together as a “Go Ape!” movie marathon.
Inventive marketing at the time, the films starred the incomparable Roddy McDowall, who played Cornelius and Caesar, in 4 out of the 5 movies. All the movies can now be found on streaming services.
In 2024, Pota fans were offered the chance to see the film on May 8th at the special Fan Event and “Go Ape” again!

The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.
The British actor is now 19 and I’m meeting him once again over Zoom — this time, he’s in his London-area home — for this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. He’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Franklin.” The limited series follows Benjamin Franklin,...

One of several "Star Wars" movies currently in development at Lucasfilm just took a major step forward. Writer Beau Willimon is now set to co-write director James Mangold's upcoming adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Willimon will pen the script alongside Mangold for what is tentatively titled "Dawn of the Jedi", which was first announced last year during Star Wars Celebration.
The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter. Willimon is perhaps best known for creating Netflix's "House of Cards." However, "Star Wars" fans will know him best as one of the writers of "Andor," the much-acclaimed Disney+ series about Cassian Andor. Most notably, he penned the episode "One Way Out," which is widely considered to be one of the best episodes of television in the history of the franchise. Willimon was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the episode. Now, he's getting the chance to tackle a movie.

Somewhere, at this very moment, someone's dad is probably watching one of the Jesse Stone movies on DVD, and that man is having a great afternoon. After this, he might pop in "Ford v. Ferrari" for the seventh time.
The character of Jesse Stone began his life in a series of airport novels written by the late Robert B. Parker. The first Jesse Stone novel, "Night Passage," was published in 1997 and it followed the titular former LAPD detective (and divorced recovering alcoholic) as he investigated money laundering and murder in Paradise, Massachusetts. Parker had a hit on his hands with "Night Passage," and proceeded to writer eight additional Jesse Stone novels from 1998 up until his death in 2010. Jesse Stone had become an institution at that point, and other authors began writing Stone novels in Parker's style. There have been 11 additional Jesse Stone novels written after Parker's death.

There may not be a more daunting artist from the twentieth century (and beyond) to grapple with in any form than Bob Dylan. The folk music legend is regarded by many as the most influential songwriter of the last 60-plus years, and, at the age of 82, is just as relevant today as he was in his rebellious young adulthood. He pricked the nation's conscience in the early 1960s with classic protest anthems like "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," inspiring many a teenager and twentysomething to pick up an acoustic guitar and sing their truth. Then, in what his folkie colleagues/admirers took as a betrayal, he went electric. This would be the first of many confounding transformations. In a way, he kept throwing fans off the scent of the big "Who is Bob Dylan?" question by, every few years, getting...

Timothée Chalamet is ready to be a part of the MCU — the “musical cinematic universe,” that is.
In a recent interview with NME while promoting “Dune: Part Two,” Chalamet said he wants Austin Butler’s Elvis Presley to appear in his and James Mangold’s upcoming Bob Dylan film, “A Complete Unknown.”
“I can’t wait for that film,” Butler said of the Dylan project. “I wish I could be on set every day to just watch the magic happen.”
“I wish you were in it!” Chalamet replied. “There’s an Elvis character in the Johnny Cash biopic [‘Walk the Line’]. It’s really brief, it’s very brief, but I was kind of wishing we could create a musical cinematic universe.”
Butler nabbed a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his performance as Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 film. He also received his first Academy Award nomination for his...

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Film Editing Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Anatomy of a Fall” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Holdovers” (9/2).
Having previously bagged trophies for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Aviator” (2005), and “The Departed” (2007), Thelma Schoonmaker could now become this category’s first quadruple champion by winning for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The 84-year-old is also the first cutter to reach a total of nine nominations, with all but her first for “Woodstock” (1971) having come for films directed by Martin Scorsese. The story of “Ford Vs. Ferrari” is so long and winding. At one point, Christian Bale was going to star in Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” movie with Adam Driver, but he eventually left to star in “Ford vs. Ferrari,” with Mann’s blessing, of course. The film was ultimately made by James Mangold and released in 2019. But there were versions of it before that.

All five of our predicted Oscar nominees for Best Sound number among the contenders for the Golden Reel Awards bestowed by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) announced on Jan. 16. Oscar frontrunner “Oppenheimer” reaped three bids across the six film categories. One of its closest Oscar rivals, “Maestro,” earned two nominations while the other three — “Ferrari,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest” — had to make do with one apiece.
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the new Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. There can be up to six nominees from a film: one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers.
Last year, “Top Gun: Maverick” won the prize for sound effects and foley here before prevailing at the Oscars. In 2022, “Dune” pulled off the same double act. And in 2021, “Sound of Metal” still...

Four of our five predicted Oscar nominees for Best Sound number among the contenders for the Cinema Audio Society Awards for sound mixing announced on Jan. 9. Throughout his 40-plus year career, filmmaker Michael Mann has accumulated and proliferated many colorful phrases and bite-sized poetic philosophy. One of his most favored is the phrase "time is luck." The sentiment refers to how every second one can breathe — to ambulate and interact with the world around them, to manipulate and change it and, in turn, be changed by it — is an opportunity and a blessing.
Mann's personal and professional philosophies were heavily influenced by his time researching and befriending men who operated on both sides of the law, and he found that law enforcement officers as well as lifelong criminals tend to have an innate sense of a ticking clock in their lives. While the bulk of Mann's filmography deals with cops, criminals, and crime, there are several notable outliers — "The Keep," "The Last of the Mohicans," "The Insider," and especially "Ali" — that point the way to his...

Premiering last summer, “The Bear” has become the most-watched comedy series in FX history. Season 1 amassed a total of 13 Emmy nominations, making it the third most-nominated comedy this year behind “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (14) and “Ted Lasso” (21). Included as part of their showcase is Jon Bernthal for Best Comedy Guest Actor for his performance as Michael “Mikey” Berzatto, his first Emmy bid after over 20 years working in the industry.
Like many actors, Bernthal’s first television appearance was in the “Law & Order” franchise on the spinoff “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in 2002. A fresh report suggests that the long-gestating buddy cop sequel Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year, with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair.
We know that a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon series has been in the works for a long time. The late, great Richard Donner – director of the first four films – was working on it before he passed away in 2021. Then, in the same year we heard that Mel Gibson, one half of the series’ leading duo was set to take over the directorial reins. Barry Keoghan landed his first Oscar nomination last year for his supporting turn in Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Co-star Brendan Gleeson was also nominated but they both lost to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” player Ke Huy Quan. However, the big takeaway was that Keoghan had officially arrived.
The Oscar nomination preceded key turns in Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk” and Chloé Zhao‘s MCU movie “Eternals,” while he also played the Joker in a deleted scene in Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman.” Keoghan has quickly risen through the ranks of Hollywood stars and now is one of the most interesting actors currently working.
His latest role comes in Emerald Fennell‘s sophomore outing as a director — her biting, satirical comedy-drama “Saltburn,” from Amazon MGM Studios/Warner Bros. Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a crime epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, has generated $21 million from 63 overseas markets. In terms of weekend ticket sales, it’s pacing ahead of Swift’s “The Eras Tour,” which added $10.5 million in its second weekend of release. The pop star’s concert extravaganza has earned a sizable $164.78 million worldwide to date.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” took second place behind “Eras Tour” at the domestic box office, bringing in $23 million and boosting its global tally to $44 million. Outside of North America, the U.K. has been the biggest market for “Flower Moon” with $3 million, followed by France ($2.6 million), Germany ($1.6 million), Australia ($1.4 million) and Spain ($1.3 million). Italians and fast cars simply go together like, well, Italians and pasta. Or like Italians and wine. Basically, Italians have cornered the market in all the world's coolest stuff, is what I'm saying. That certainly holds true for "Ferrari," director Michael Mann's production about the man responsible for building the most prolific and widely-admired car manufacturer ever based in that little boot-shaped country. Mann fans have been looking forward to the acclaimed filmmaker's take on the story of Enzo Ferrari for quite some time now, especially since the stylistic storyteller knows exactly how to make all the most dangerous pursuits look impossibly cool -- even as they function as cautionary tales, at the same time.
"Ferrari" sure seems to be of a piece with the rest of Mann's filmography to this point, boasting one heck of a talented actor in the lead role along with all the daring action...

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

The old DC Universe is dead, long live the DC Universe. As we get closer and closer to the rebirth of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC hierarchy of power, there is plenty to be excited about, from new takes on iconic characters and also fresh new faces making the leap to the big screen.
One of the most exciting aspects of the new universe is the opportunity to get deeply weird, and no project feels as full of potential for weirdness as "Swamp Thing." We don't know much about the movie just yet, but it is a sign of confidence, Swamp Thing was the first upcoming DC movie to get a director announcement (other than James Gunn tackling "Superman: Legacy"), so it is clear DC's resident green monster will be an important part of the new universe.

After two dismal weekends at the box office, any chance of things recovering for the last weekend of August doesn’t seem likely, although one daring movie (and this year’s “National Cinema Day“) will try to make an impact. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
On Sunday, August 27, many North American theaters will be offering $4 movie tickets in hopes of keeping the burst of movie attendance thanks to “Barbenheimer” going into September. It will be hard to tell what sort of effect it has this year, because studio estimates on Sunday might not be able to account for any bump from National Cinema Day.
With that in mind, Sony is releasing the racing movie “Gran Turismo,” which isn’t based on the Sony Playstation driving simulator as much as it tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, as played by Archie Madekwe (“Midsommar”), a gamer whose...
