Featured review
Coming-of-age comedy that follows June (Esther Povitsky) trying to solve the mystery of who is behind the robbery of the pharmacy she works at, while not capable of getting over her ex-boyfriend.
Directed by Nicholaus Goossen and written by Goossen and Esther Povitsky, Drugstore June is a movie that does not take itself very seriously, and considering this is a comedy, this might be an asset since it allows for an unabashed exploration of humor. From silly dialogues and unrealistic turns of events to fever dream sequences with gummy bears, the movie is really unbelievable. Defined by herself as a loser with no life, scared, obsessed with her ex-boyfriend (Haley Joel Osment), without aspirations, dreams, or hobbies, the greatest asset of Drugstore June is in its protagonist. A protagonist that, owing to her usual boredom when not streaming to her 'June Squad', finds herself on a crusade to discover who robbed the dispensary she works at as a cashier. By reason of her taking the matter in her own hands, an adventure takes place with her going to different places and talking with complete strangers where exchanges are in no short supply of eccentricities. Full of non-sequiturs, no understanding of boundaries, she is often trying advances with the men she comes across, and with her signature funny expressions, Esther Povitsky is great playing June; she gives her character the required persona that makes the movie watchable. She is mostly responsible for the humor in the movie, not only because of her main role but also because the rest of the cast is not too funny. This is the weakest aspect of the movie; it relies too heavily on Povitsky, and the rest of the characters are not only not humorous but also underdeveloped. On the other hand, the ending could have been better. Not only it felt rushed but also an unsatisfactory way of closure.
It could be said June, as a protagonist, is a very annoying one, but this is not the case since she is mostly misunderstood, and behind all that goofiness and idiosyncrasies there are profound elements to be discovered and brought to the surface. With all her flaws, June is someone who channels that stage in life between being a young adult and an adult and everything it means: fear, uncertainty about the future, and the desolation of finding your dreams are probably going to be broken. In any case, it is a light investment that manages to be entertaining and produce some laughs.
