Filmed in late 2014. It was going to be released by independent distributor Alchemy in early 2016, but the company filed for bankruptcy shortly after. In April of 2019, it was announced that myCinema would finally release the film in September.
During the jungle movie shoot, there is a clear mirroring of a scene from Apocalypse Now (1979), but due to copyright they cannot mention it directly.
The film has indirect appearances by the likeness of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and more directors in the beach house scene.
Tenth and final collaboration between James Franco and Seth Rogen, after Freaks and Geeks (1999), Knocked Up (2007), Pineapple Express (2008), The Green Hornet (2011), This Is the End (2013), The Sound and the Fury (2014), The Interview (2014), Sausage Party (2016), and The Disaster Artist (2017). In 2021, Rogen said he would no longer work with Franco in light of the sexual misconduct allegations against him.
