With Chinese period epics still continuing to fill cinemas, it’s no surprise that old school Shaw Brothers favourites are increasingly being brought back to screens, 1975 classic “The Flying Guillotine” now reappearing as “The Guillotines”. The film was produced by Peter Chan, who recently updated the Shaws’ “Blood Brothers” as “The Warlords”, this time allowing Andrew Lau of “Infernal Affairs” fame to take the director’s seat and with a big name pan-Chinese language cast headlined by Huang Xiaoming (“Ip Man 2”), rising Taiwanese star Ethan Ruan (“Monga”), Shawn Yue (“Motorway”), pop singer Chris Li (“Bodyguards and Assassins”), Jing Boran (“The Bullet Vanishes”) and Wen Zhang (“Love is Not Blind”). The guillotines of the title are a secret brotherhood of assassins controlled by Emperor Qian Long (Wen Zhang) during the Qing Dynasty, their name also referring to the fearsome decapitation weapon they wield. Charged with bringing down rebel leader and apparent...

Berlin – Martin Scorsese and Andrew Lau will finally join forces on the New York-set gangster action-thriller Revenge of the Green Dragons, six years after the U.S. director won his first (and, as of yet, only) Oscar with The Departed, an adaptation of the Hong Kong filmmaker’s Infernal Affairs. Scorsese will serve as an executive producer for the project. It is understood that Lau visited the U.S. last month to confirm details of the production after spending the end of last year presiding over the release of his own directorial effort The Guillotines, which was repped

It has been a long and bumpy road for Peter Chan, getting his new production of The Guillotines to the big screen. First announced back in 2009 with Hong Kong's man-of-the-moment Dante Lam at the helm, Teddy Chen then took the reins when Emperor Motion Pictures gave The Viral Factor the green light, only for the production to grind to a halt just weeks before shooting was set to commence. Script issues were cited, but it emerged that Chan had again fallen out with Chen (as was the case of their previous collaboration, Bodyguards and Assassins). History repeated itself, and Chen was replaced by Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs), but things finally got underway. Originally thought to be a remake of the Jimmy Wang Yu classic,...

During the Manchurian-ruled Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yong Zheng established a secret assassination squad known as the Guillotines to eliminate all who opposed him. Once heavily favored by the Emperor, the Guillotines are deemed expendable once Emperor Qian Long ascends to the throne and adopts Western ideas and technology. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression.
Led by master fighter Leng, the top ranked guillotine squad consists of five young warriors: Mu, San, Tai, Hutu and Buka. Serving the Qing Court unquestioningly, they have never failed in 348 missions to eliminate their targets. But their success has made them arrogant and complacent.
Their next mission is to eliminate Wolf and his Shepherd gang. During the operation,...

After the crappy news that production of the remake of the 70s classic period martial arts actioner The Flying Guillotines (about a team of ruthless, crack assassins versed in the use of a weapon that can decapitate its victims instantly) had hit the buffers hard, our cup is once again half full, with word that the production is back on track - under new director Andrew Lau. What happened to the films original helmer Teddy Chan remains a bit of a mystery, but production is set to restart in August, so we can expect the movie to appear in early 2012! Crucify me if you must, but a remake of the 70′s kung fu classic “The Flying Guillotines” by “Bodyguards and Assassins” director Teddy Chen sounds like a good idea to me. The $15 million production is tentatively scheduled for release next year, and I’m already biting my tiny little fingernails in giddy cinematic anticipation. After all, what’s not to like about a martial arts flick that incorporates a device which decapitates its victims? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Below you’ll find some new artwork for the picture, which has now dropped “flying” from its moniker. “The Guillotines” sounds good to me. Prepare to be dazzled by this synopsis: rguably history’s first Swat team, this covert assassination squad of the emperor was composed of young street thugs who had been killing for food and survival since they were kids. It seems Teddy Chen’s (‘Bodyguards and Assassins’) big budget reboot of the classic 70s, Hong Kong martial arts movie The Flying Guillotines has had itself a name change, at least that’s what it looks like according to this freshly released teaser art. “Flying” has been dropped and now its just…‘The Guillotines.’ Whatever handle we’re calling it now, the prospect of a big budget period martial arts flick about a team of ruthless, crack assassins versed in the use of a weapon that can decapitate its victims, is more than enough reason for us to want them to just get on and make it already. Guillotines is due out early next year.
