There was an understandable fear that 2024 would be a grim year for the movies, but it turned out that 2024 was really just a grim year for everything else. Phew!
Of course, some concerns about the state of the film industry did come to fruition. The strikes threatened to significantly reduce the number of movies that Hollywood was able to release in theaters, and there were indeed several weeks in which consumers were left with little to choose from at their local multiplex. That crisis was inexplicably exacerbated by audiences and studios alike; it was bad enough that nobody showed up for the greatest blockbuster since “Top Gun: Maverick” (“Furiosa“), and even worse that Warner Bros. didn’t give people the chance to show up for the greatest Clint Eastwood drama since “The Mule” (“Juror #2“).
At the same time, however, we’ve known since Sundance that rumors of 2024’s awfulness — which...

The blockbuster triumvirate of Disney’s “Moana 2,” Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II” have given the theatrical market the biggest Thanksgiving in industry history with an estimated $426 million grossed between Wednesday and Sunday. That’s more than $100 million greater than the previous record for the November holiday period set in 2018 at $315 million.
And when combined with the overall grosses dating back to the release of “Wicked” and “Gladiator II,” the domestic box office has gained more than $680 million over the past 10 days. At the end of October, the year-to-date total was 12% behind last year’s pace. Now it is roughly 7% behind.
It’s an astonishing turn of events from six months ago, when movie theaters were facing the worst start to the summer box office in decades.

Director Doug Liman says he’s making Deeper, a ‘scary’ undersea supernatural thriller, with Tom Cruise as its star.
Director Doug Liman and Tom Cruise have long planned to work together again after collaborating on Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made. And according to a new report, that is still set to happen – just not in the guise we expected. When thinking about a Liman/Cruise collaboration at Warner Bros, a sequel to 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow might spring to mind – but no, it seems like the duo could be cooking up something different.
Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman (via World of Reel) quotes Doug Liman as saying that his next film will be Deeper, starring Tom Cruise. It’s a project that Warner Bros has reportedly been trying to get off the ground for a decade under the stewardship of several different filmmakers.

Up on Variety about a year ago, there was an interesting interview with the German distributor of the Expendables and John Wick movies. Fred Kogel, who runs Leonine Studios, noted that all the top action heroes now, Keanu Reeves, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, and Harrison Ford, are the same ones we had in the eighties and nineties. But with Stallone and Ford in their late seventies, who will be the new action stars when the icons are done with the genre? Liam Neeson’s action career can’t go on forever, and Bruce Willis has, sadly, had to retire. For his part, Kogel doesn’t believe distributors and studios have done enough to build up a new crop of action heroes, noting that for the older stars, there was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor so that you could relate to that.

Why Did Tom Cruise Insist On Bringing Back Val Kilmer For Top Gun: Maverick (Photo Credit – Instagram)
When Top Gun: Maverick was set to take off, Tom Cruise made one thing crystal clear: no Val Kilmer, no movie. Per producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Cruise was adamant about bringing back his Top Gun co-star. “He said, ‘We have to have Val. We have to have him back. We have to have him in the film,’” Bruckheimer shared. The mission was simple—Cruise wouldn’t revisit Maverick without his iconic rival-turned-wingman, Iceman.
Cruise wasn’t just chasing nostalgia—he was honoring a bond that defined Top Gun. Val Kilmer’s cool, calculated Iceman was pivotal to the original’s charm, and Cruise was adamant about his return. Ironically, Kilmer initially didn’t even want the role, calling the story uninteresting in his memoir. But his iconic portrayal turned indifference into legacy, making Iceman...

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for both "Gladiator II" and "Moana 2."
Two major blockbuster sequels are barreling into theaters this Thanksgiving weekend that, to most normal people, might not seem to have much in common. Sure, both "Gladiator II" and "Moana 2" (with more than a little help from "Wicked") are about to super-charge the box office in a late-year push that theaters sorely need. But beyond the fact that both are bringing in boatloads of fans and both happen to feature curly-haired, shirtless warriors who return years after their first appearance in defiance of gods and men -- okay, yeah, even typing that out makes the latter feel like a serious stretch -- there's not much else to link them together. One is a swords-and-sandals drama set amid the dust of the Colosseum, and the other's an animated Disney movie about a Polynesian-influenced wayfinder who's most at home on water.

Before Glen Powell was buzzing around in Top Gun: Maverick or melting hearts in rom-coms, he made a sneaky pit stop in the NCIS universe. Yep, long before soaring to A-list heights, Powell popped up in not one but two criminally underrated episodes of the hit procedural. And no, it wasn’t as some blink-and-you’ll-miss-him extra; he had a solid role that left fans double-checking IMDb years later.

Tom Cruise, the Hollywood megastar, has always heeded his own counsel, and for better or for worse, the choices he made throughout his career paid off. Now, at the pinnacle of the industry, Cruise can boldly claim that he is the last true Hollywood icon left standing. And such a label comes with its own set of responsibilities.

Cruise is not the first actor to say no to sequels. The trend was only popular with sci-fi or action-adventure films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. For artists looking for something more creatively grounded, sequels were never an option.
It didn’t come as a surprise then that an actor like Cruise refused to entertain the idea of a sequel well until the 2000s when he left behind his Oscar-baiting career to pursue something more theatrically motivated aka the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Since Mission: Impossible‘s inception, the iconic action franchise has continued to influence the genre, even to this day. Josh Margolin’s recent action flick, Thelma, starring June Squibb, also takes heavy inspiration from the Tom Cruise-led IP, which not only is the 93-year-old’s first leading role but also serves as her foray into the realm of action.

This weekend, a lot more people were thinking about the Roman Empire than usual thanks to the release of "Gladiator II" (read our review). Ridley Scott's return to the glory of Rome sees Paul Mescal take on the role of Lucius, the newest contender in the Colosseum after the late, great Maximus (Russell Crowe), who haunts the "Gladiator" sequel throughout. There was a time, though, when other stars were being considered to enter into the arena as its new hero, and their involvement could've made for a very different movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Timothée Chalamet and Miles Teller were both eyed to play Lucius before Mescal came aboard. The "Dune" and "Top Gun: Maverick" actors (respectively) were apparently the frontrunners for the role, too, at least until Scott decided to indulge in some late-night television binging. After hammering through hours of Mescal's hit series "Normal People," steps...

Do you look like Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell? Are your parents aspiring actors? Well, you could kill two birds with one stone by winning Austin’s Glen Powell lookalike contest, where the actor says whoever takes home the prize could see their parents or a family member cameo in one of his movies. I’m just learning this, but Powell’s parents “frequently show up” in his films, and he wants someone else to have the same experience. I’m not kidding.
Glen Powell couldn’t attend a Glen Powell lookalike contest in Austin, Texas, because he was busy filming Edgar Wright’s version of Stephen King’s The Running Man. Still, his mother and aunt helped judge the competition. How adorable is that? According to Fox 7 Austin, a physician’s assistant, Maxwell Braunstein, won the top prize. Want to know what he won? I hope you’re sitting down.

Glen Powell called into his own lookalike contest in Austin, Texas on Sunday to give the winner a very special prize: a cameo in his next film.
But no, not for the winner himself — since Powell’s parents frequently show up in his films, the “Twisters” and “Top Gun: Maverick” actor offered the opportunity to the lookalike’s “parents or any family member of their choice.”

Braunstein received $5, a cowboy hat, free queso from Torchy’s Tacos for a year and a special message from Powell himself, who was on FaceTime with his mom during the event.

Superhero movies and action thrillers are famous for being box office magnates, drawing audiences to the theatres in multitude. Although Barbie was an unexpected (and worthy) hit, films like The Avengers and Top Gun 2 have long dominated the business.

However, their dominance might be challenged, and that too by a musical despite the underwhelming performance of Joker 2. Against all odds, Ariana Grande-starrer Wicked seems to be emerging as the next big thing at the box office.

You don’t need to be a Bob Dylan aficionado to appreciate Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into the iconic folk singer. Even if your knowledge of Dylan’s career is limited to a few famous tracks or a vague recollection of his controversial shift to electric guitar, Chalamet’s performance in “A Complete Unknown” is undeniably a career best. He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.
On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Searchlight Pictures hosted two packed screenings of “A Complete Unknown” at the Fox Lot, followed by Q&a sessions featuring director and co-writer James Mangold, actors Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy. Chalamet, currently filming Josh Safdie’s new period project “Marty Supreme,” was notably absent, but his presence wasn’t needed to dominate the conversation.

Will the Oscars reflect who won the presidency?
As the country recovers from the emotional rollercoaster of the 2024 presidential election, Hollywood will be coping with this charged political atmosphere at events throughout awards season. And that could determine the movies that Oscar voters choose to elevate. After all, the Academy Awards have a long history of reflecting or commenting on the nation’s political zeitgeist, sometimes defiant, other times conciliatory.
In 2016, the Academy’s selection of “Moonlight” over the presumed frontrunner, “La La Land,” was widely seen as a symbolic rejection of the divisive rhetoric that defined Donald Trump’s win. “Moonlight,” a poignant exploration of a young Black man’s sexuality, stood in stark contrast to Trump’s controversial policies. His Muslim ban would be rebutted by two other honors bestowed in that year’s ceremony: Mahershala Ali’s historic win as the first Muslim to take home a supporting actor Oscar,...

While “Wicked” looks to earn one of the best opening weekends of the year, Paramount is hoping to entertain the masses in its own way with “Gladiator II,” Ridley Scott’s legacyquel to his 2000 Best Picture winner. It marks the return of a type of film once thought to be extinct: the sword-and-sandal epic.
The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as a Roman general reduced to life as a gladiator as he seeks to avenge his wife and child who were slain at the hands of a corrupt emperor. It was part of a history of ancient civilization films that peaked in the 50s with films like “The Ten Commandments” and “Ben-Hur” but persisted into the 2000s with films like “Alexander,” “Troy,” and “300” before ceding the cultural spotlight to comic books and sci-fi franchises.
Nearly a quarter-century later, the return of “Gladiator” marks the return of sword-and-sandals for the first time in a generation.

“Glen Powell delivers one hell of a performance.”
That is the headline of Connor Jameson’s (The First Picture House) review for Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the critically acclaimed comedy directed by Richard Linklater. In the film, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a professor moonlighting as a hit man for his city police department, descending into dangerous, dubious territory. Gary adopts numerous personas throughout the film, and that is what provides Powell with the opportunity to shine. The actor not only rises to the occasion as a leading man, but makes the movie work with his “entrancing” performance.
With raves like that (and the movie’s 95% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s no wonder that Powell is leading Gold Derby’s odds to take home the Golden Globe for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor.

There’s a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise heading our way, with Jurassic World Rebirth set to reach theatres on July 2, 2025 – and during an interview with Empire, director Gareth Edwards said that the new movie goes back to what he loved about the original Jurassic Park.
News of the new Jurassic World movie first hit back in January, when it was revealed that the screenplay – by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, returning to the franchise for the first time since The Lost World: Jurassic Park – had already been written. The project was assembled in a mad scramble after that, with Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards ending up at the helm. This new Jurassic World movie won’t be featuring any returning lead characters from the previous Jurassic Park / Jurassic World movies, so describing it as a “Rebirth” could be accurate.

Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold will receive the Visionary Tribute for their film “A Complete Unknown” at this year’s Gotham Awards, it was announced today. The upcoming Bob Dylan biopic from Searchlight Pictures will be honored at the 34th edition of The Gothams, taking place on Monday, Dec. 2 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The Gotham Visionary Tribute recognizes groundbreaking collaborations that push the boundaries of storytelling in film.
“In ‘A Complete Unknown,’ Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold have beautifully captured Dylan’s emergence in 1960s New York not just as an artistic evolution, but as a meditation on the necessity of change,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham. “Through Chalamet’s breathtakingly authentic performance and Mangold’s masterful direction, we witness Dylan’s transformation from folk prophet to electric rebel, showing how growth often requires letting go of the very relationships and identities that shaped us.

Amazon Prime Video's latest hit series, "Cross" is very much in the lineage of shows like "Reacher" and "Jack Ryan. "Reacher" broke records when it hit Prime Video, immediately proving popular with its pulpy action driven by a true mountain of a man in Alan Ritchson, who finally gave fans a book-accurate Jack Reacher. Those novels, written by British author Lee Child, are immensely popular in their own right, which all but guaranteed that the streaming adaptation would — much like "Yellowstone" — become a hit with dads across the world.
There's not much to the "Reacher" formula beyond "Big man who's good at punching people goes around punching people." Of course, there are a few dad-centric accoutrements, such as Reacher being a former military policeman and a sort of tacit conservatism that undergirds the whole thing. But essentially, "Reacher" is like John Wick with a big boy in the lead. Similarly,...

For many aspiring actors, Hollywood can feel like a game of chance—years of auditions, rejections, and small roles, all in hopes of landing that big break. Everyone dreams of landing that big break, but for Glen Powell, the road to stardom wasn’t exactly a red carpet.
While today Glen Powell is the heartthrob we swoon over in Anyone But You and Top Gun: Maverick, there was a time when his career felt like it was idling in neutral, no matter how hard he tried to accelerate. The hustle was real, and so was the pressure—just ask his bank account!

So, how did Powell go from a struggling actor to Hollywood’s next big thing? Well, it wasn’t a blockbuster film, an Oscar nomination or even a viral meme. No. It was two episodes of NCIS.

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation. Wright’s take on The Running Man is now in production and Powell has been spotted on the set – and yes, he was running. You can check out some of the images right here:

When it comes to being dubbed the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’, it’s not just about muscles, a charming smile, or a handsome face; it’s about timing, choices, and, quite often, saying ‘no’ when the world is telling you to say ‘yes’. And that’s exactly what happened to Glen Powell and Pedro Pascal, who, for reasons of their own, reportedly turned down the coveted title before John Krasinski, 45, finally accepted it.

Despite Cruise’s plans to stay in the character for several more years, it appears that Ethan Hunt will either retire or die at the end of this film. "Hit Man" and "Twisters" star Glen Powell has been pretty clear about wanting to model his career after Tom Cruise, his co-star in the mega-hit "Top Gun: Maverick." Cruise became a mentor figure to Powell, and if a new rumor is to be believed, he could be poised to make his career trajectory look even more like Cruise's. On the heels of the first trailer for "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning," which strongly implies that the movie will be the end of the line for Cruise's Ethan Hunt and this era of the whole franchise, newsletter writer Jeff Sneider claims Cruise has already hand-picked Powell to take over the "Mission" movies going forward.
During an episode of The Pat McAfee Show, McAfee called Powell during a live broadcast to congratulate him about the "news." Powell's reaction over the phone was swift (and pretty funny): "My mom would never let me do that.

After a rumor swirled online about Tom Cruise wanting Glen Powell to replace him in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, ESPN commentator Pat McAfee called up Powell himself to ask if it was true.
On his Nov. 12 broadcast of “The Pat McAfee Show,” the host FaceTimed Powell and read him the rumor, saying, “We just want to call and say congratulations, brother.”
Powell seemed to playfully deny the rumor, responding, “My mom would never let me do that.” Powell added that the stunt-filled “Mission: Impossible” franchise is the “worst gig in town, everybody knows that.”
“That’s a death trap,” Powell added, of course nodding to the fact that Cruise performs his own stunts for the action series, including hanging off the side of a moving airplane, scaling the tallest building in the world and driving a motorcycle off of a cliff before parachuting down.
