The first trailer for Joe Lynch's (Chillerama, 2011) Mayhem has been released. It shows a group of office workers turning on each other, after infectious material is introduced into the building. One part Dawn of the Dead (1978) and one part Office Space (1999), the film stars: Steven Yeun ("The Walking Dead"), Samara Weaving ("Ash vs Evil Dead") and several others. The film's first trailer is reminiscent of still another film, The Belko Experiment (2016). And, that clip can be found here. Yeun plays Derek. He has just lost his job. But, the tables turn on his managers, when a virus is let loose. Now, Derek is looking for revenge, after this slight. Everyone is in the crosshairs as chaos ensues. Mayhem has a wide release set for November. In October, the film will have a Los Angeles premiere. The wide release is set for November 10th, through Video-on-demand. The film will see...

Throughout his career, filmmaker Joe Lynch has given us fantastic movies that have spanned both the horror and action genres, including Wrong Turn 2, the "Zom-b-Movie" segment of Chillerama, Knights of Badassdom, Everly, and his latest movie, Mayhem, which recently enjoyed its world premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival.
Written by Matias Caruso, Mayhem follows a corporate attorney named Derek (Steven Yeun), who's trapped inside his office building with hundreds of fellow employees during a viral outbreak that causes the infected to be unable to control their primal urges. Chaos ensues as the co-workers begin to wage war against each other the longer the virus rages on.
Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Lynch after the first SXSW screening of Mayhem in Austin, and he chatted about the trepidation he felt going into the film’s world premiere, the journey to getting Mayhem made, working with Yeun, and more.

Her delectable desserts have honored Hellraiser’s Cenobites and paid tribute to Elm Street's dream stalker, and artist Janine Lister's latest creepy creation celebrates another formidable force in the horror genre: filmmaker Adam Green.
Featuring characters and settings from the worlds of one of her favorite filmmakers, this incredible Adam Green cake was conceived when Janine wanted to design a dessert that would encompass multiple horror projects that were all created by the same person.
Being a passionate fan of Kane Hodder, Janine watched the horror icon play Victor Crowley in Green's Hatchet movies, which led her to seek out more of the director's projects, including Frozen, Digging Up the Marrow, the horror anthology Chillerama, and the Holliston series, all of which are represented on her cake:

With the impossibly fun Tales of Halloween now in wide release, it seems like as good a time as any to dig deep into one of my favorite subgenres of horror: the anthology film. From Tales from the Crypt to Tales from the Darkside to Tales from the Hood, the horror anthology offers something for everyone. And apparently that something is “tales.”
In speaking with most of the directors from Tales of Halloween, there was consensus in their feelings about what makes for a great anthology film: singularity of vision and consistency of quality. Both can be difficult to achieve, as the format practically dictates that some segments be stronger than others or express a different voice. But when an anthology can achieve even one of those things, there’s the potential for real horror movie magic.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions, and more.
The only directing duo contributing to Tales of Halloween, John Skipp (writer of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5) and Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy) have a lot to say about making a movie with their friends and the current state of horror. Their segment, “This Means War,” about a pair of neighbors feuding over Halloween decorations, deals with this very subject.
One of the things I love about Tales of Halloween is that so many of the segments deal with different aspects of the holiday. Yours tackles Halloween decorations... sort of. Where did the inspiration for your short, "This Means War", come from?
Andrew Kasch: Halloween haunts are my jam! Each year, I hit...

Since bursting on the scene with the throwback slasher Hatchet in 2006, writer/director Adam Green has built a career on doing this his own way. He has written and directed multiple features, produced films for up-and-coming filmmakers, created, written and starred on two seasons of his own sitcom Holliston, co-hosted The Movie Crypt, his own successful weekly filmmaking podcast and much, much more.
Digging Up the Marrow, Green's latest feature, is something totally different: a blend of documentary and narrative that defies any easy categorization. In the film, Green plays himself, a horror movie director with his own independent production company (ArieScope) who is contacted by a man named Decker (Ray Wise, the best he's ever been) claiming that monsters are real and that he knows exactly where to find them -- at an entrance to an underground world he calls "the Marrow."

Joe Lynch has directed a number of films over the past eight years, including Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, Knights of Badassdom, and the “Zom-b-Movie” segment of 2011’s Chillerama anthology, but I’ve never felt like we’ve seen a film that was truly 100% his voice. That all changes, though, with Everly, his gut-punch love letter to the modern action film, a raucous and wickedly fun time that manages to be way more heartfelt and emotionally-charged than its over-the-top brutality and balls-out gunplay might otherwise suggest. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a truly badass female hero get her cinematic due, but everything about Lynch’s latest gets it just right.
In Everly, we meet the titular prostitute (Salma Hayek) on Christmas Eve right after she’s been subjected to a brutal gang-rape orchestrated by a Yakuza mob boss who isn’t thrilled with her recent betrayal of him and his organization.

I was about 8 years old the first time I saw the inside of a nursing home. This wasn't a senior apartment complex or an assisted living facility. It was a depressing place with fluorescently lit rooms for sleeping and a television room for visiting. And it was full of people that time forgot and especially people who forgot time.
My step-grandfather had Alzheimer's and for some reason my parents thought bringing a strange little girl to visit him would lift his spirits as if he wasn't confused enough.
I'll never forget the moment when I walked through the doors into the waiting room. An elderly woman who I had never seen before in my life bent down until she met me at eye level, smiled, and said, "I remember you when you were just a baby."

In life there are ‘certainties’ and then there are ‘near certainties.’ Whilst the former might be represented by the rising and setting of the sun, the latter is most fittingly represented by Adam Green’s on and off the screen FrightFest attendance record. With a slight sense of amazement he reflected, “Every movie I have ever made has played here… every single one… its crazy.” In 2014 the trend is set to continue as the lights fade in the Discovery Screen 1 on Saturday evening for Digging up the Marrow!
So as Green prepares for his eighth FrightFest in nine years [abstaining from FrightFest 2012 not by free will and with an amusing story to the value of $75,000 to follow] he took us behind the story of one filmmaker and one festival.
There’s no better place to start than at the beginning, so how did your FrightFest journey begin?
Hatchet had world premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and whilst it did great, Tribeca is not a genre festival.

Dost thou have the insatiable appetite for LARPing role-players, mystical creatures, and foul spells of horror that would make even the bravest of knights rust their armor? Ah, yes, it’s with great sorrow that Joe Lynch’s Knights of Badassdom Director’s Cut was snatched from our possession by feudal kings drunk on power, but the cut we’re left with still sweetly smells of Lynch’s love for invigorated genre work. Whist commoners pretend to know the valor and bravery of knighthood, Lynch gives untested souls the chance to fight real monsters and cast true spells of wizardry – what one can only presume is a LARPer’s dream. Brandish some cold hard steel and vanquish your enemy for good, what sounds better than such a quest?! Oh, right, not having your face torn off by a succubus – but that’s what makes this geeky horror comedy so damn endearing.

The big names in horror are often recognized by both the genre community and mainstream entertainment culture, showered with accolades by horror fans and film critics alike. Directors like John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Wes Craven have secured their place in film history, but many more talented directors go largely unsung for their hard work and noteworthy contributions to the genre. To remedy that, we recently kicked off a recurring segment that gives much-needed credit to those groundbreaking horror filmmakers who aren’t always given the praise they deserve. A lot has changed since Alan Jones from Total Film coined the term Splat Pack referring to a group of gory movie makers who sought to stretch the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable in an R rated film. The sea of blood and guts that rolled across the cinema screen starting in 2002 gradually pulled back to low tide. PG-13 became the new R rating once again and the MPAA decided to pull itself up by its bootstraps to enforce its code. For the Splat Pack, originally consisting of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth (the Frank Sinatra of the Pack according to Quentin Tarantino), James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriquez (added later by association), Greg McLean, Neil Marshall, Alexadre Aja and Darren Lynn Bousman, filmmaking has gone as usual, and each has made a substantial contribution to the horror genre in a positive way, testing the limits of our stomach...

Celebrating it's 2nd decade as Chicago's largest and longest running Horror Convention, the Flashback Weekend returns to the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois on August 9th-11th. And FEARnet will be there as a sponsor providing some cool goodies and swags to attendees (while supplies last). On top of the usual plethora of dealers booths, special events and screenings and more, a slew of genre celebrities will be on hand for autographs including legendary director George A. Romero, actor Danny Glover, reunion casts for 'Pet Semetary,' 'The Lords Of Salem,' and 'Dawn Of The Dead.' There will also be a slew of cool screenings at the Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18 located right next door to the Crowne Plaze which include 'You're Next,' 'Hatchet III,' the never-before-seen lost 'Trancers' sequel 'Trancers 1.5: City Of Angels.' Sounds like an awesome time!

When Joe Lynch is involved in a project, you can be pretty damn certain that it's going to entertain. Lynch first came onto my radar in 2007, when he brilliantly infused Henry Rollins into the Wrong Turn universe and directed Wrong Turn 2, a sequel that far surpassed the original on the entertainment scale. After watching it, I learned that Lynch had previously directed a handful of music videos, and was in fact one of the creators of the show Uranium, on Fuse TV. And he of course won me over even further when FEARnet's own Holliston came around, Joe finding himself in front of the camera, and playing a whacked out version of himself.
Point being, Lynch always delivers the entertainment, and has continually surprised and impressed with his ability to be more than just "one of those horror guys." In fact, he's currently getting set to direct an action film called Everly,...

Trevor Wright photographed by Clinton Gaughran for AfterElton
At 30 years old, Trevor Wright can claim his ride in the entertainment industry has been both varied and very long. He began as a Gap spokeskid who landed a role in Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" video alongside Elijah Wood, and he grew up landing roles on The George Lopez Show, NYPD Blue, Scrubs, and Boston Public. Then came the role for which AfterElton.com readers tend to be most appreciative: Zack in Shelter, the 2007 independent gay romance written by the film's director Jonah Markowitz. Wright's innocence and sensitivity in the role helped seal its position in our poll of the 100 greatest gay films ever -- it came in at #1. Yes, ahead of Brokeback Mountain. Anne Hathaway's resentment is palpable.

Before directing Detroit Rock City and unleashing a giant sperm on New York City in the “Wadzilla” segment of Chillerama, Adam Rifkin introduced the world to a horny, psychopathic phantom known as The Invisible Maniac. Not enough movie maniacs have their own personal theme songs, if you ask me.
Working under the alias “Rif Coogan”, Rifkin helmed this 1990 T&A slasher comedy about a sexually repressed nerd named Kevin Dornwinkle, who grows up to invent invisibility only to be mocked by his colleagues. The stinging mockery drives him over the edge so he murders them. He escapes from an insane asylum and goes incognito as a summer school teacher, where he continues to perfect his invisibility formula while taking an unhealthy interest in student bodies, particularly those of scream queens Melissa Moore, Debra Lamb, and the late porn star Savannah.

I have a confession. Despite living in Texas, I've never been a big fan of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. I actually didn't see the original film until I was 25 years old, which shocked most of my friends considering what a horror buff I am. But it just wasn't a staple in my household. (My mom and I were both Jason fans to the core.)
I'm also not as venomously anti-remake as most of my friends. Do I wish Hollywood would get new material and invest even a fraction of those monumental budgets into indie films and original ideas? Absolutely. But from a marketing perspective, it's easy to see why they don't; these franchises are guaranteed cash in the bank, and many younger audiences aren't even familiar with the originals.

Back in 2007, we ran an article called Gay Sex Scenes that Made Movie History. A delightfully naughty exploration of firsts and foresk- ... er, foremosts in terms of gay male intimacy on the silver screen, it celebrated some of the films that blew the celluloid closet to bits, one modesty sock at a time.
Six years later, it's shocking just how far pop culture has come in terms of normalizing gay characters and stories, and how much bolder the gay film audience has grown in demanding films that speak truthfully to their sexual experience (though, it must be said, the films that answer the call are usually decidedly outside of the mainstream). So we've decided to bring you an update to our foundational piece that looks at what has happened since. When horror fan and filmmaker Kyle Kuchta discovered the phenomena of the horror convention, he felt like he had finally found a home. So, he made a movie about it. Though his documentary about horror fans probably doesn’t feature a large amount of eye candy, it highlight a very important aspect of fandom.
"I wanted to do a documentary on horror conventions," he explains, "because I didn't feel as if a lot of people knew about them or the loving community that they are a part of."
While making Fantasm, Kuchta’s been travelling the country to various conventions to find out why horror brings people together.
Not only has he been talking to the fans, but he’s tapped the people behind the films that bring these horror hounds together, including scream queen Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Nightmare), Tom Atkins (Halloween III, Escape from New York), Joe Lynch (Chillerama,...

Fantasm, a new documentary about horror conventions and the tight-knit community of fans who attend them, is currently in production under the direction of Kyle Kuchta.
Kyle Kuchta has a self-proclaimed obsession with horror films. Upon discovering the phenomenon of horror conventions, the young genre fanatic finally felt like a part of a community. He connected with like-minded individuals with whom he shares his love for the genre. Now he’s traveling to conventions all across America to find out why horror brings people together.
In addition to legions of devoted fans, the documentary will feature insight from iconic actors and filmmakers. Interview subjects who have already participated in Fantasm include Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Nightmare), Tom Atkins (Halloween III, Escape from New York), Joe Lynch (Chillerama, Wrong Turn 2), Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and more.

Not too long ago on the podcast, Michael Haffner and I talked about show someone should do a true documentary on horror fans and the conventions they attend. It looks like Kyle Kuchta is doing just that. What I think could be a very interesting topic will be explored in the documentary Fantasm. While it looks like Kyle will be hitting all the major conventions in the States, it would be interesting to have him cover Cinema Wasteland – one of my favorite conventions (if you want to call it that) – due to the close-knit family that Wasteland attracts. Read the press release below for all the information and if you happen to see Kyle filing at one of the below conventions, tell him you heard about it here on Destroy the Brain!

We’ve had numerous documentaries about the horror genre, specific horror franchises, the people that make the movies, and even those that go all-out celebrating the Halloween holiday.
I’d say we’re overdue for a documentary like Fantasm that specifically focuses on horror fandom and the conventions that bring us all together.
As the tagline reads, Fantasm is “a documentary about horror fan devotion, and the events that keep them devoted.” Horror fan turned documentary filmmaker Kyle Kuchta is behind this project that talks to both the fans and the genre icons that attend these conventions for their take on what keeps the blood pumping in this particular genre of fandom.
I’ll let the press release tell you the rest.

A German horror film called Bela Kiss has come to our attention and, today, we have a trailer to share with you. The film is written and directed by Lucien Forstner and is based on real-life Hungarian serial killer Bela Kiss. He reportedly killed 23 young women, storing their blood-drained bodies in metal barrels, conserved in alcohol.
Forstner's film - which stars Kristina Klebe (Rob Zombie's Halloween, Chillerama) - concerns five bank robbers in search for a hideaway in a remote hotel as they flee from the police. According to the synopsis, "brutal and unforeseen events take overhand and build a bridge to the past. The assumed safe house turns into a nightmare...is Bela Kiss still alive?"
Check out the trailer inside and follow this link to the official site. Stay tuned for U.S. release details as they come in.

Horror fans love their icons. We watch our favorite movies repeatedly. We visit horror conventions to get up close and personal with the horror stars. We've worshiped the Romeros, Cravens, Hoopers and Carpenters and loved the Englunds, Moseleys, Todds and Hodders.
But in addition to them, we need new blood as well. Say hello to the next great one… Adam Green.
We need that next wave of horror icons. We love our horror stars, but to have the genre live on and thrive as it has, we need new horror superstars. But that is not an easy torch to take. We're used to Romero, Craven and Carpenter. We accept them and will go to see any film they put out. When a guy from Holliston, Ma came out of the blue and threw his hat into the horror genre, we collectively said, "Who the hell is Adam Green?" Then he...

Tonight, FEARnet is running a block of Adam Green films (Hatchet, Chillerama, Frozen and Spiral) and somewhere within this programming the very first clip from Hatchet III made its debut.
An eagle-eyed ShockTillYouDrop.com reader spied the clip and sent us a rough-ish look. You can watch it via the player after the jump.
The film will continue the saga of Crowley, the "Bayou Butcher," who first made his gruesome mark in the 2007 original. The movie is written and executive produced by series creator Adam Green, who also directed the first two films. Veteran camera operator McDonnell (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Hatchet 2) makes his directing debut.
You'll see a lot of familiar faces in this clip, including Zach Galligan. Look for Hatchet III next year. Hopefully, a better version of this preview will hit soon!
