Sunny Lane blew a lot of good will with me via STRAP ON SUNNY, a poorly made all-girl time-killer she had the temerity to direct.
I had just gotten through being wowed by her innocent (turned alarmingly slutty) performance in DARK ANGELS 2: BLOODLINE, but this effort five years later is terrible.
For starters, Sunny has lost her innocent looks -she's as hardened (and ordinary) looking as your run of the mill porn performer. I guess working in over 100 videos (between the two titles mentioned) took a lot out of her.
But the real problem is the format, with script credited to one Jack Daily (short for Jackoff Daily I presume). This over-long program of boring girl-on-girl vignettes serves no purpose -it isn't arousing and is tedious in the extreme. I recently watched the excellent movie THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT and in an early scene Annette Bening & Julianne Moore explain to their kids that although they are lesbians they don't watch lesbian porn (preferring male stuff instead) because they hire straight girls to perform it and it looks totally fake. They might have been describing STRAP ON SUNNY.
With horned-rim glasses, vet Nina Hartley shows up as a doctor who guides Sunny through the world of female pleasuring, and with a special strap-on dildo in tow, Sunny tries out her lessons. The other girls go through the motions and what results would probably make even Chi Chi La Rue turn off the video player.
An unintentionally revealing "making of" extra on the DVD titled KEEP YOUR SUNNY SIDE UP helps explain what went wrong. Sunny is a successful porn starlet who takes an unfortunate "gee whiz" approach to her trade. The naiveté that made her so alluring at the outset of her career is counter-productive when it comes to donning a director's jodhpurs and trying to concoct an entertaining program. The amateurish result, even in a medium where amateurism has long since taken over the cuckoo's nest, is horrendous.
