"Pacific Rim" is one of the best American blockbuster movies of the 2010s ... or one of the best kaiju movies ever ... or even one of the best live-action anime movies not based on a specific anime (but still clearly inspired by "Patlabor" and "Tetsujin-28"). It's also a hugely important movie for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and an essential part of the Oscar-winner's filmography. After all, "Pacific Rim" was both his first original English-language script and his first original film in seven years -- not to mention the film that marked his transition into a full-time Hollywood director.
Still, as successful as the movie was, and as much as it depended on del Toro's unique visual style and imagination, a sequel (titled "Pacific Rim Uprising") was made without his involvement, meaning his original ideas for "Pacific Rim 2" were all scrapped. And though it seems unlikely that a third "Pacific Rim" will ever get made,...

Under the deal, Heisserer and Carmen Lewis — with whom Heisserer founded the production company Chronology — will develop and shepherd IP-driven and related projects for Legendary. The first project to be developed under the deal will be a “Pacific Rim” origin story series.
“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. Comic readers who grew up in the ’90s almost certainly remember Valiant Comics, the revolutionary comics publisher spearheaded by former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, but what many fans may not realize is that Valiant Comics is back with a running start under new publisher Alien Books. To celebrate the launch of the Kickstarter, I got the opportunity to talk to Alien Books director and head of this revolutionary relaunch Matias Timarchi about their plans for the franchise and their process in creating a comic bound to be an instant classic. Before getting into the interview, I want to warn you fans of the ’90s that this Kickstarter only has a day left,...

After being rumored last week, Variety has confirmed that Academy Award-nominee Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin; Edge of Tomorrow; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) has joined the cast of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming Spider-Noir live-action series as the show's lead villain.
Further details on his role were unavailable, but it seems probable that he'll be playing Spider-Man Noir's archnemesis Norman Osborn, who in this universe is a ruthless crime lord, with a vast criminal empire that is involved in a variety of illegal enterprises, including, but not limited to, bootlegging, gambling, and human trafficking. His activities ultimately put him in the path of our hero, who, throughout the comic miniseries, is seeking to bring justice to the corrupt and crime-ridden streets of New York.

Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.
In Riddick: Furya, Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. Some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. In a perfect union of style and action, two of Hollywood’s most charismatic stars, Henry Cavill and Jackie Gyllenhaal, will join forces in filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s directorial, In The Grey. The trailer of the film, which is set to hit theaters in early 2025, was released by Lionsgate Films during CinemaCon 2024 and is already garnering a lot of hype.

Film editing is a bit of a tedious process, and to make the plot more comprehensive and cohesive, a lot of scenes end up on the chopping floor. Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez learned it the hard way.
Gonzalez has been in the film and television industry for years now. She has come a long way since her lead role in Sueña conmigo, an Argentinian production from Nickelodeon. As she made her way into Hollywood, she quickly realized that she would have to fight for her roles in more ways than one.

While Marvel has won many hearts and box office records, the studio has rarely been the favorite of award shows such as the Oscars and Golden Globes. These awards are mostly reserved for films that go beyond genre tropes and have elements of arthouse. Marvel’s Black Panther is the only film that was nominated for Best Picture.
However, the prestigious Saturn Awards have constantly honored the franchise as they focus on sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Marvel has dominated the Saturn Awards for Best Comic-to-Movie Film category, which is widely regarded as the ‘Oscars for Superheroes’. Ever since it was established in 2013, only one DC film has had the honor of receiving the award, and it is not Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

It’s been 20 years since Jeff Wadlow began his career in the entertainment industry, and he’s since created a name for himself as a highly reliable Swiss army knife. He can write, direct and produce across film and television, and he also has the added reputation of being an “idea guy.” When his career was at a crossroads in the early 2010s, he wrote his way out of it and sold spec scripts for what would become Kick-Ass 2 (2013) and Bloodshot (2020). And throughout the 2010s, whenever his next movie needed a bit of time to get off the ground, he’d put on his writer hat and join Carlton Cuse’s writers’ rooms for Bates Motel and The Strain.

A sequel to 2018’s Truth Or Dare would have brought its cast back in novel fashion, only for the pandemic to lead to its cancellation.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for 2018’s Truth Or Dare.
Released in 2018, Truth Or Dare was far from the most acclaimed film to emerge from the Blumhouse horror stable, but it was still a huge hit comparative to its budget.
As a result, director Jeff Wadlow and his surprisingly large roster of co-writers began to think about a sequel. The problem was, most of the cast from the original film had already died at the hands of the vaguely Ikea-sounding demon, Calux.
Their solution? Borrow a post-modern move from Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and make a pull back-and-reveal movie about Truth Or Dare's cast encountering Calux in the ‘real’ world.
Speaking to Variety, Jeff Wadow talked about the planned sequel – which may...

Gary DeVore, the screenwriter of movies including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Raw Deal and Back Roads, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, went missing in June 1997, sparking a major manhunt.
DeVore’s mysterious disappearance has never been truly solved and there have been a number of conspiracy theories surrounding the subject including one that the CIA may have played a role in whatever happened to him.
This story is the subject of Witnessed: Fade to Black, an eight-part podcast from Campside Media and Sony Music Entertainment, in association with Stowaway Entertainment, which premieres its season finale next week. There’s also been an interesting revelation since the show debuted; Gary’s wife Wendy DeVore recently discovered over 50 scripts and treatments, written by DeVore, and Wendy and Stowaway’s Jeff Singer are now working to see if there’s a second life for these scripts.
Titles include Hurricane Chaser, Deadlocked and Hard Rock,...

Back in 2019, “Iron Man 3” production executive Chris Fenton filed an explosive lawsuit against former employer Dmg Entertainment, a once-highflying company that bridged Hollywood movies and Chinese distribution.
After a legal back and forth that included a Dmg countersuit that was later tossed, Fenton’s case is finally headed to trial next week and is expected to expose some of the opaque ways China did business in Hollywood before tensions between the U.S. and the communist superpower boiled over in 2021, leading studios to reassess their plans for the market. On Oct. 23, Fenton v. Dmg is scheduled to begin in California Superior Court, with Robert Downey Jr. and tentpole producer Neal Moritz expected to be on the witness list.
Although Fenton, a former William Morris agent who worked at Dmg for 17 years, is a respected member of the Hollywood community with a Washington, D.C., presence as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations,...

DC has had a bit of a rough go as of late, dating back to "Black Adam" not crossing the $400 million mark at the global box office in 2022, and as a result, failing to change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe. This year hasn't helped, as both "The Flash" and "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" bombed spectacularly (more on that in a bit).
A new hero, however, hopes to save the day and bring about a reversal of fortune for Warner Bros. and the fabled comic book brand — that's right, "Blue Beetle" is arriving in a theater near you very soon. But will this new superhero be able to defeat this brutal losing streak? Maybe!
Early box office tracking (per Deadline) has "Blue Beetle" taking in around $30 million on its opening weekend domestically. That's certainly on the low end for a superhero movie, but it's also an improvement...

Netflix seems to be tired of people asking, “What is a Netflix show?”
In a letter to shareholders Wednesday, it attempted an answer. What it came up with is that a hit Netflix show is, well, a hit Netflix show. You know, like, “Beef, “Queen Charlotte,” “Love Is Blind” or “The Night Agent” — any show that “super-serves the audience,” as the company put it.
Tautologies aside, it might have a point. Viewers tuned in, and subscribers paid up, to the tune of 5.9 million net new additions in the June quarter. Whether that was because Netflix started cracking down on password sharing in earnest or because its popular shows were popular, Netflix has reached a critical mass that transcends tentpoles, franchises and familiar brands.

TV shows and movies have been responsible for some of Hollywood’s super couples but have also contributed to some of the industry’s best friendships. Stars like Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley met on set and continued being friends and even own a business together.

To fans all over the world, Outlander is one of the all-time great fantasy television shows. The series, which has been running on Starz since 2014, is responsible for a burst of interest in the Scottish Highlands and has been credited with making a star out of Scottish actor Sam Heughan.
Over the past few years, Heughan has branched out to other projects, even writing several books — and with the release of his 2022 memoir, Heughan is getting more transparent than ever with his fanbase. In a 2022 interview, Heughan opened up about his experience with an eating disorder, admitting to the pressure that male performers face in the entertainment industry.

For the first time in years, DC and Marvel superhero movies failed to dominate the annual theatrical marketplace in 2022 as comic book flicks were overshadowed by big-budget franchises like “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World Dominion,” which rose to the top of the box office heap instead.
With 1.5 billion for “Avatar” and 1.49 billion for “Top Gun,” these sequels finally broke the chokehold that superheroes have held on the global box office since 2017, the last time that blockbuster movies unrelated to DC Studios or Marvel led the movie pipeline.
Meanwhile, 2023 brings a slew of big franchise titles, including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Fast X” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which rank among the most anticipated despite featuring not a single caped crusader.

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to the horror genre. Sure, a larger and more elaborate follow-up to a horror property can sometimes result in a masterpiece, like in the case of Aliens or Evil Dead II, but added complexity can often sabotage an over-ambitious sequel. This also applies to videogames, with developers sometimes trying too hard when attempting to expand on a solid foundation. This curious desire to fix what isn’t broken is why I think Monolith Studios’ 2008 hit Condemned 2: Bloodshot is such an interesting sequel, as it simultaneously misunderstands and improves on its iconic predecessor, making it still worth discussing after all this time.
A follow-up to 2005’s Condemned: Criminal Origins, which chronicled the trials of FBI agent Ethan Thomas as he attempts to apprehend a rogue serial killer that only murders other serial killers, Condemned 2 was meant to bring the urban thrills of...

It may be hard to believe now after nine "Fast & Furious" movies and guff like "The Last Witcher" and "Bloodshot," but there was a time when Vin Diesel was an interesting actor. With that gravelly voice and a smooth aura of self-assurance, he was a natural, even when playing a small but neatly drawn character in "Saving Private Ryan," a slick senior broker in "Boiler Room," or voicing a big metal fella with a heart of gold in "The Iron Giant." In another world, he might have even gone on to become a writer-director — after all, Diesel got his start starring in his own low-budget indie films.
It would have been really interesting to see how his career might have developed if he'd followed that route instead of becoming an action star. But he was set on that path with "Pitch Black," the sci-fi sleeper hit that gave him the juicy role of Riddick,...

Idris Elba is teasing his potential return as the DC Comics assassin Bloodshot.
“I would definitely like to tell the Superman story. There’s no doubt,” Elba tells Variety. “Bloodsport versus Superman. It needs to happen.”
The actor was referencing how Bloodsport was sent to prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet, a key element of his character’s backstory that’s alluded to in “The Suicide Squad.”
Bloodsport was one of the few remaining members of Task Force X that survived the battle against Starro in “The Suicide Squad.” While the film ended with Bloodsport blackmailing Amanda Waller into setting his team free, the assassin’s current whereabouts in the DC cinematic universe remains to be seen.
