Prime Video set a December premiere date for its new video game-inspired series “Secret Level.”

The anthology series, which hails from the creators of “Love, Death & Robots,” will debut Dec. 10 on Prime Video globally, across 240 countries and territories. The Amazon streamer announced the news during the Gamescom Opening Night Live global live stream.

“Secret Level” consists of 15 episodes, with each one centered on an original short story set within the worlds of beloved video games. Episodes were inspired by titles like “Armored Core,” “Concord,” “Crossfire,” “Dungeons & Dragons,” “Exodus,” “Honor of Kings,” “Mega Man,” “New World: Aeternum,” “Pac-Man,” “Sifu,” “Spelunky,” “The Outer Worlds,” “Unreal Tournament” and “Warhammer 40,000.” One episode will also center on the Playstation world as it spotlights PlayStation Studios’ entities.

Prime Video touted that the series brings together “more game IP in a single series than has ever been done before.”

Legendary Entertainment has entered into a first-look television deal with Eric Heisserer, Variety has learned exclusively.

Under the deal, Heisserer and Carmen Lewis — with whom Heisserer founded the production company Chronology — will develop and shepherd IP-driven and related projects for Legendary. The first project to be developed under the deal will be a “Pacific Rim” origin story series.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular ‘Pacific Rim’ universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

News of the TV first-look deal comes just under three weeks after it was announced that Heisserer and Chronology had set a first-look film deal at Sony Pictures.

Exclusive: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Mallory Jansen and Emmy and Tony Award winner Anthony Lapaglia are boarding Alex Proyas’ upcoming sci-fi satire R.U.R. opposite Lindsay Farris (Ash vs Evil Dead).

Proyas penned the screenplay which is an adaptation of Karel Capek famous science fiction play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), published in 1920. R.U.R. follows Helena, played by Jansen, who visits the island factory of Rossum’s Universal Robots to emancipate the robots from capitalist exploitation, with catastrophic results.

Founded in the wake of the hit series Shadow And Bone, with Carmen Lewis who will oversee the deal, Chronology will focus on delivering elevated genre as theatrical experiences for Sony. Already in the works at the studio is Dissolution, a new grounded sci-fi novel by acclaimed author Nicholas Binge, which the company will co-produce with Temple Hill. Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.

This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Released in 2018, Truth Or Dare was far from the most acclaimed film to emerge from the Blumhouse horror stable, but it was still a huge hit comparative to its budget.

As a result, director Jeff Wadlow and his surprisingly large roster of co-writers began to think about a sequel. The problem was, most of the cast from the original film had already died at the hands of the vaguely Ikea-sounding demon, Calux.

Their solution? Borrow a post-modern move from Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and make a pull back-and-reveal movie about Truth Or Dare's cast encountering Calux in the ‘real’ world.

Gary DeVore, the screenwriter of movies including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Raw Deal and Back Roads, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field, went missing in June 1997, sparking a major manhunt.

Back in 2019, “Iron Man 3” production executive Chris Fenton filed an explosive lawsuit against former employer Dmg Entertainment, a once-highflying company that bridged Hollywood movies and Chinese distribution.

After a legal back and forth that included a Dmg countersuit that was later tossed, Fenton’s case is finally headed to trial next week and is expected to expose some of the opaque ways China did business in Hollywood before tensions between the U.S. and the communist superpower boiled over in 2021, leading studios to reassess their plans for the market. On Oct. 23, Fenton v. Dmg is scheduled to begin in California Superior Court, with Robert Downey Jr. and tentpole producer Neal Moritz expected to be on the witness list.

Netflix seems to be tired of people asking, “What is a Netflix show?”

In a letter to shareholders Wednesday, it attempted an answer. What it came up with is that a hit Netflix show is, well, a hit Netflix show. You know, like, “Beef, “Queen Charlotte,” “Love Is Blind” or “The Night Agent” — any show that “super-serves the audience,” as the company put it.

Tautologies aside, it might have a point. Viewers tuned in, and subscribers paid up, to the tune of 5.9 million net new additions in the June quarter. Whether that was because Netflix started cracking down on password sharing in earnest or because its popular shows were popular, Netflix has reached a critical mass that transcends tentpoles, franchises and familiar brands.

Season 4 of You has once again found itself at the top of Netflix‘s English-language TV charts for the week of February 13 to February 19.

The first five episodes of the season, which debuted on February 9, racked up an addition 64.1M hours viewed. The episodes landed in the Top 10 in 88 countries. The remaining five episodes of Season 4 will drop on March 9.

The launch of the latest installment also prompted audiences to revisit the series, as all three previous seasons appeared in the Top 10 this week. Season 1 sat at No. 3 with 22.4M hours viewed, Season 2 was No. 10 with 15.1M hours viewed, and Season 9 was at No. 9 with 15.6M hours viewed.

Netflix has released its weekly Top 10 viewing numbers for the week of February 6 with the returning series “You,” starring Penn Badgley, as its top English-language television series with over 92 million hours viewed worldwide.

The romantic comedy “Your Place or Mine,” teaming Reese Witherspoon with Ashton Kutcher, was the top viewed movie for the week with 51.2 million viewing hours. Written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”), the cross-country love story was released on the streamer in time for the weekend before Valentine’s Day. It was not only the #1 movie in the United States but also in every European region, Australia, New Zealand, as well as a number of South and Latin American countries.

But, Ginny & Georgia is still posting some impressive numbers, coming in just below Lockwood & Co. despite having been on the streamer for weeks. With the additional 38.1M hours viewed last week, the second installment of the series has officially entered the all-time Most Popular English TV list at No. 10.

Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to the horror genre. Sure, a larger and more elaborate follow-up to a horror property can sometimes result in a masterpiece, like in the case of Aliens or Evil Dead II, but added complexity can often sabotage an over-ambitious sequel. This also applies to videogames, with developers sometimes trying too hard when attempting to expand on a solid foundation. This curious desire to fix what isn’t broken is why I think Monolith Studios’ 2008 hit Condemned 2: Bloodshot is such an interesting sequel, as it simultaneously misunderstands and improves on its iconic predecessor, making it still worth discussing after all this time.

Idris Elba is teasing his potential return as the DC Comics assassin Bloodshot.

“I would definitely like to tell the Superman story. There’s no doubt,” Elba tells Variety. “Bloodsport versus Superman. It needs to happen.”

The actor was referencing how Bloodsport was sent to prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet, a key element of his character’s backstory that’s alluded to in “The Suicide Squad.”

Bloodsport was one of the few remaining members of Task Force X that survived the battle against Starro in “The Suicide Squad.” While the film ended with Bloodsport blackmailing Amanda Waller into setting his team free, the assassin’s current whereabouts in the DC cinematic universe remains to be seen.

The eight new episodes explored how Keef, an apolitical artist-turned-activist, grappled with the responsibility of gaining a following.

Exclusive: The Hideaway Entertainment has promoted Kristy Grisham to SVP of Development and Production, upping Ryan Cassells to Director of Development and Production, and tapping Jennifer Cox as Creative Executive. The company’s expansion reflects a recent initiative to ramp up their slate by buying and optioning books, screenplays, life rights and other IP in all stages of development.

In her role, Grisham will be responsible for overseeing development and production on The Hideaway’s current slate of film and television projects, including its adaptation of Dan Schilling’s book Combat Control with Thruline Entertainment Partner Ron West (The Great) and screenwriter Michael Russell Gunn (Billions). Grisham was integral in bringing the book proposal to the company and packaging the movie, which is being directed by Sam Hargrave (Extraction), with The Hideaway and MGM co-financing.

Eric B. Fleischman’s Defiant Studios has landed film slate financing from Solis Studios and Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Variety has learned.

Defiant, behind genre titles like “The Knocking” (pictured above during production) and “Offseason,” will make multiple features under the partnership, with the first to shoot this summer.

This is the first significant move by Solis, the film division of the media and tech collective led by former “One Tree Hill” star Brett Claywell and Brendan de Kauwe. The company’s goal is to create “deeper layers of engagement between content and the communities who consume it,” their mission statement says, including the utilization of blockchain technology. Solis also counts Polygon Studios as a technology partner.

Julien Baker will release a new EP, Little Oblivions Remixes, on September 1st via Matador Records. The release features select tracks off her album Little Oblivions that are remixed and reworked by artists like Helios, Half Waif, Gori, and Jesu.
