Melissa McCarthy started her career doing improvisational comedy at The Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles, which is also where she met her husband Ben Falcone. She then went on to a successful run on the TV series “Gilmore Girls” for seven seasons. She followed that up with other TV shows and small movie roles but it would be a return to The Groundlings crew that would launch her into super-stardom. Her former castmates Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrote a female gross-out comedy called “Bridesmaids” and cast McCarthy along with other Groundlings veterans Maya Rudolph and Wendi McLendon-Covey. The film would become a surprise hit in the genre which was usually dominated by men and even earn McCarthy an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress.

Quinta Brunson faces off against two previous Emmy winners for the first season of "Abbott Elementary."
Variety in nominations is rare this Emmy season. Thus, the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race stands out. This is the only category amongst drama and comedy acting honors wherein more than half of the nominees come from shows without a Series nomination.
This makes watching the nominated episodes a bit more fun. There are only so many times one can watch every episode of Hacks and Ted Lasso, no matter how good they are! In addition, it makes the race a little easier to call. The last time an actress won this prize for a show not nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series was when Melissa McCarthy surprised with a win for Mike & Molly in 2011, which (not) coincidentally was the same year she was the breakout star of Bridesmaids in movie theaters.

Jimmy Kimmel helmed the 64th Primetime Emmys on ABC on September 23, 2012, his first time hosting this awards show. Read on for our Emmys flashback 10 years ago to 2012.
“Modern Family” reigned over the Emmys in its first few years, claiming Best Comedy for each of its first five seasons, from 2010-2014. A decade ago, it was in the middle of this streak, not only winning in this category, but tying for most nominations (nine) and wins (four) of the night. The other five nominees in this category were “30 Rock,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Girls” and “Veep,” which did score a major victory.

Jean Smart (‘Hacks’) would be first repeat Emmy winner in Comedy Actress category since you-know-who
If Jean Smart (“Hacks”) claims another Emmy Award this year, as Gold Derby’s racetrack odds overwhelming predict will happen, she would be the first repeat Emmy winner in the Best Comedy Actress category since … do we even need to say it? You likely already know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) was the last person to claim back-to-back victories in this race. In fact, Jld won six in a row between 2012 and 2017, a record for any acting category at the Emmys.
Taking the “Veep” star out of the equation for a moment, you have to go all the way back to Patricia Heaton (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) in 2000 and 2001 to find a repeat champion in Best Comedy Actress. In between now and then, there were 13 leading ladies who took home one and only one trophy in this category — see the list below. But Smart has an upper hand on all of those other one-timers because she just.

Generosity can’t be overrated, and actress-fashion designer Melissa McCarthy and her cousin Jenna Perusich hammer that point home — literally — in HGTV’s newest home-sweeter-home series. Over six episodes of The Great Giveback With Melissa McCarthy and Jenna Perusich, the two refurbish spaces to surprise do-gooders like combat veteran Katie in the premiere or, later, inner-city nonprofit director Mynor, all nominated by loved ones. Giveback “reminds you how good the simplest act of kindness can be,” says Emmy-winning Mike & Molly and Gilmore Girls vet McCarthy, who also serves as an executive producer. Here, she and Perusich (also an actress) share what led to the sawdust-filled moments—and powerful stories—ahead. Did your 2020 episode of Celebrity Iou with Property Brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott — where you surprised Jenna’s parents with a home makeover — inspire you to do Giveback? Melissa McCarthy: Doing Celebrity Iou was such a fantastic experience. But...

For his landmark 700th vanity card, Chuck Lorre chose physics. Lorre’s 700th card happened to coincide with the 100th episode of “Young Sheldon,” which he co-created and executive produces with Steve Molaro. And so, given the scientific nature of the character of Sheldon Cooper, it made sense to share a physics equation that adds up to… 100.
Immediately following “Young Sheldon” on CBS this Thursday night was another show Lorre executive produces, “United States of Al,” which ended with Lorre’s 701st card. Which, naturally, poked fun at the 700th card:
Lorre’s self-penned vanity cards have been a signature part of most of his series for 25 years, starting with “Dharma and Greg,” and then moving on to “Two and a Half Men,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Mike & Molly” and “Mom.” His current series “Young Sheldon,” “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “B Positive” and “United States of Al” have also featured the cards.

Based on a true-crime phenomenon — the real-life, stranger-than-fiction story behind the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria that was featured on Dateline NBC — The Thing About Pam is produced by Blumhouse Television, NBC News Studios and Zellweger’s Big Picture Co. The series, currently in pre-production and casting, is based on the murder of Faria (played by Mixon) that resulted in her husband Russ’ conviction, though he insisted he didn’t kill her. Nicole Kidman has admitted that she stayed in character as wellness resort director Masha for five months shooting Hulu limited drama series Nine Perfect Strangers.
During a TCA panel, she joked that she was “batshit crazy”, repeating a line from her character in the series, which is based on Liane Moriarty’s book.
“I’d only respond as Masha,” she said. “I wanted a very calm healing energy to emanate all the time so I remember going over to people and sort of putting my hand on their heart, holding their hand, they would talk to me or use my name Nicole when I would completely ignore them.”
“The only way I could actually relate to people was that way because I felt like otherwise I would be doing a performance and I didn’t want to feel that way,” she added.

And in her “defiance,” Olowofoyeku is forcing the industry to meet her on her own terms — although she admits that she has been pressured.
“There have been a couple of agents when I was in New York who suggested or advised that I change my name,” she said. “There was an agent that I was with who I liked, so she was the only one whose opinion could have possibly swayed me.

Exclusive: Former Two and a Half Men executive producer/co-showrunner Jim Patterson is returning to the Chuck Lorre fold. He has joined Warner Bros TV/Chuck Lorre Prods’ multi-camera CBS comedy series B Positive as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside creator Marco Pennette.
Patterson spent a decade working for Lorre, Wbtv and CBS on the long-running multi-camera comedy series Two and a Half Men, where he rose to executive producer/co-showrunner. He also did a stint as a consulting producer on Mike & Molly.
Following the end of 2.5 Men, Patterson and fellow 2.5 Men co-showrunner Don Reo created The Ranch, which became the first Netflix-produced multi-camera comedy series that introduced a new model producing 20 episodes a year that air in two batches. The series, ran by Patterson and Reo, was a solid hit for the streamer and ran for four seasons, completing 80 episodes.

With the success of Gotham, not to mention the more recent Elseworlds, this latest addition to the DC family was up against it – and that’s without the added burden of one of the biggest and best-loved franchises in comic book history. So, how does Batwoman fare?
Unclear in terms of its direction, dynamics and overall place in the microcosm that is Gotham City, the verdict is as bleak as a chilly night at the summit of its tallest skyscraper.
Most of the cast put in decent enough performances. As Batwoman/Kate Kane, Ruby Rose grows into the role as the episodes tick by, but the star turn has to be Rachel Skarsten as chief villain Alice. She gets her teeth well and truly into the part and does a great job at switching from one extreme emotion to another, seemingly on a dime. Although she’s maybe a little...

The Boys unleashed an unapologetically ultraviolent response to the entertainment industry’s seemingly interminable array of live-action superhero fare with a TV series created by Supernatural and Timeless‘s Eric Kripke, adapting the bleak comic book series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The result was a serial offering that’s said to be one of the most-watched shows for the Amazon Prime Video platform.
Amazon was clearly privy to the fact that The Boys was something special even before it premiered, since the online retail monolith’s streaming arm preemptively ordered a second season of the series back in July 2019. If you’re so inclined, do check out our review of The Boys Season 1.
