Superman Lives, The Green Hornet and sadly now Clerks III: here’s a rundown of the Kevin Smith films we’ll probably never see...
Kevin Smith has always had to fight to get his films off the ground: he started his filmmaking career by maxing out multiple credit cards to self-finance Clerks, and more recently, legend has it, it was only Johnny Depp’s decision to come on board as a wacky supporting character that allowed Smith to secure financing for his walrus-centric horror flick Tusk.
Smith has, across his career, been offered several barmy jobs (he rejected a chance to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian back in the 90s) and he’s also signed up for a lot of projects that never got past the script phase.
The latter camp of could’ve-beens is what we’re talking about today, following that news that Clerks III...

Grimm takes a detour from recent revelations to turn in a wrestling-themed episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.13 Silence Of The Slams
After the build-up to Grimm’s 100th episode last week, the show’s writers apparently felt the need to put a chokehold on some of the heavyweight storylines we’ve been treated to recently, and instead fall back on a regular Wesen-of-the-Week case.
It’s a shame the show is pulling its punches at this stage in the season when there’s so much going on, least of all a global Wesen uprising and the discovery of an ancient artefact that can heal the sick and dying. But no, let’s create an episode centred on the Portland wrestling scene!
Hands up; I love wrestling so seeing the two worlds collide did provide a little excitement this week. Sadly though, the plot wasn’t anything we...

November 17th is looking to be a great day for genre-related home entertainment releases as we’ve got quite an eclectic array of titles coming out this Tuesday. For those who may have missed it earlier this year, The Stanford Prison Experiment is arriving on DVD this week and the good folks at Scream Factory are keeping busy once again with their HD releases of both Troll films as well as the 1987 thriller White of the Eye.
Olive Films is also resurrecting a bevy of cult classics this week on both Blu-ray and DVD and for those of you Amazon shoppers out there, you can pick up the 20th anniversary edition of The City of Lost Children (which is amazing if you’ve never seen it) exclusively on their site.

Those looking forward to the return of Jay and Silent Bob in Kevin Smith’s anticipated Clerks III will have to wait a little while longer, because Smith has announced that, come April, he’ll be starting production on his second horror film, Comes the Krampus.
Taking to Reddit, the filmmaker revealed that, with Tusk nearing completion, the original plan was for him to gear up to shoot Clerks III. But now he’s had a change of heart. Clerks III will still happen, but it’s Comes the Krampus that has him hooked right now, so much so that he has to make it next. And fortunately for us, he’s making it very soon.
Smith co-wrote the holiday horror anthology with Andy McElfresh. McElfresh will direct the episode, The Krampus vs. The 3rd Grade; long-time collaborator Jason Mewes will helm period episode, Hitler’s Krampus; Smith will direct the Gothic horror piece,...

Kevin Smith better have something to show us soon, the guy keeps on piling up projects, I really don’t know where he finds the time to talk so much. On the burner he has Tusk, Clerks III, his apocalyptic “Christzilla” flick, Helena Handbag, and now it’s a horror anthology centering around Santa Clause’s European foil, the Krampus. [via bloodydisgusting]
Krampus for those who don’t know is a demonic creature who punishes bad children on Christmas while Santa rewards the good. It’s getting pretty popular in North America, last year even Chicago hosted “Krampusfests”, which included the European tradition of adults dressed as the “Christmas Devil” roaming the streets while rattling chains to frighten naughty children. Well that sounds absolutely scary for a child to see and hear.

I'm a huge fan of horror anthologies, especially when they are good, but even when they are so bad they're good. Kevin Smith has revealed on his blog that he's created a holiday horror anthology film project called Comes the Krampus. He co-wrote the script with Andy McElfresh, and Smith will direct a segment, as will Jason Mewes, Jennifer Schwalbach, and others. The film will shoot over the summer, after Smith finishes Clerks 3. Here's the full announcement from Smith, with all of the details he was willing to reveal,
If you listen to the Edumacation podcast, you’ll remember that episode 20 (Part 2 of the Christmas eps) consisted of another dopey conversation that resulted in a screenplay – a’la SModcast and Tusk. I was goofing around with Mr. Edumacation himself, Professor Andy McElfresh, when we accidentally brainstormed a Christmas horror anthology that would eschew the gruesome spin on Santa Claus, and...

Hey everyone – remember that time Kevin Smith said he was retiring after Clerks III? Yeah, looks like that plan is falling apart rather quickly for our passionate filmmaker. First, he announced his pseudo horror thriller Tusk, a film that shows Michael Parks turning Justin Long into a walrus, then came news of Helena Handbasket, another genre piece that might turn into a musical. Now, Smith has surprised fans with another outrageous surprise – he’ll be co-directing Comes The Krampus!, a Christmas themed horror anthology birthed from yet another podcast conversation.
Inspired by one of the more notable classic horror anthologies, Creepshow, Comes The Krampus! will follow a few tales of terror that ignore Santa’s usual Christmas spirit in favor of The Krampus’ kid devouring ways. This is a team SModcast production through and through, with getting everyone involved – wait, why am I telling you this? Let’s take a...

Although Kris Kringle gets all the love, here at Dread Central we're big fans of the Krampus. The character just doesn't get enough love, I tell ya! In any event, Kevin Smith thinks so, too, and he's gearing up to tell the mythical beast's tale like never before.
Explains Smith via his blog: If you listen to the Edumacation podcast, you’ll remember that episode 20 (Part 2 of the Christmas eps) consisted of another dopey conversation that resulted in a screenplay – a’la SModcast and Tusk. I was goofing around with Mr. Edumacation himself, Professor Andy McElfresh, when we accidentally brainstormed a Christmas horror anthology that would eschew the gruesome spin on Santa Claus, and instead embrace the Scandinavian/German Kid-Eating Christmas creature known as The Krampus. That podcast was released 12/23/13.
It took us less than a month, but Andy and I have finished the screenplay for a flick we’re calling Comes The Krampus!

In a well meaning gesture, Evan purchases a grand 19th century plantation home for his girlfriend. At first, she is taken aback and none too happy, as neither of them have even finished college. However, Evan assures her that it will be good for them; they will be able to fix it up, flip it, and make some extra cash. Unfortunately, little do either of them know the terrible past of the house and an innocent action during a weekend visit from a few college friends resurrects a blood thirsty killer who has a fetish for a freshly sharpened ax.
Sleek with high production values and competent direction, Mask Maker has a familiar premise that certainly borrows elements from some of the genre classics, most notably Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, the...

What do The Texas Chainsaw Massace, Friday The 13th Part 2, Treat Williams and Michael Berryman all have in common? Yes, they‘re all remarkable, but that’s not where I’m going with this. Give up? They all have cameos in Mask Maker (a.k.a. Maskerade, and now on DVD from Screen Media), a film that succeeds in knowing exactly what it wants to be (don’t you hate when people say that?) and has no problems getting lost in the extensive annals of the cookie-cutter slasher film.

Lafayette, Louisiana is continuing to develop an indie film making scene, with Active Entertainment and Bullet Films debuting one of their first slashers this year. The title is Mask Maker, previously Maskerade. Set in farmland, a manor house holds unimagined voodoo curses and one killer with a serious identity problem. He compensates for a disfigured face with the peeled grimaces of others. Not for the squeamish, Mask Maker's best qualities are its hoodoo mythos, the excellent acting, and some exceptionally gory scenes.
A young child is accidentally cut along the top of the skull and soon, infection sets into the wound. Nothing will heal this injury, until his mother turns to a voodoo spell. The stumbling block comes about when she has to sacrifice animals and later humans to keep her son alive.

A look at what's new on DVD this week:
"A Summer in Genoa"
Directed by Michael Winterbottom
Released by Entertainment One
Of the many films Michael Winterbottom ("A Mighty Heart," "9 Songs") has directed in recent years, you wouldn't guess the one starring recent Oscar winner Colin Firth as a father who must take care of his two daughters in the wake of a car accident involving their mother (Hope Davis) would be the one to have trouble making it to the U.S. But here we are three years after "Genova," as it's known in much of the rest of the world, was shot and it's finally arrived on DVD, a mix of supernatural thriller and human drama that's actually getting reasonably good reviews upon its delayed release. Catherine Keener co-stars.

Since we last reported on Griff Furst's Maskerade nearly a year ago, a few changes have occurred. The film is now known as Mask Maker and there's a new trailer to sink your teeth into. A young couple purchases a 19th century plantation home and invites friends up for the weekend to celebrate. When they accidentally release a long-buried evil, their dream home is transformed into a house of horror as the original owner returns to exact bloody revenge. Nikki Deloach, Stephen Colletti and Anabella Casanova star. Furst has since directed Swamp Shark .

Sometimes actor, producer and director, Griff Furst has a new film on the way called Maskerade featuring Treat Williams and Michael Berryman as well as Nikki Deloach, Stephen Colletti, Ross Britz and Jeepers Creepers ' Jonathan Breck. A trailer has gone live at the film's official site . Maskerade concerns a lucky couple who hits the jackpot when they purchase a 19th century plantation home for pennies on the dollar. Determined to get rich quick, they invite their friends up for the weekend to celebrate their good fortune. It's quickly apparent that the plantation home's former residents have not left and the unlucky youths suddenly find themselves running for their lives. Standard crazed family fare, it sounds like. Let's see what Furst can do to dusty off an old concept.

You see it's pretty simple. When someone finds a dollar, it usually means that I lost it. To say my luck is sketchy at times is a bit of an understatement, but after hearing about what happened to a poor couple in Maskerade I'm feeling pretty damned good!
Maskerade stars Nikki Deloache, Terry Kiser, Stephen Colletti, Jonathan Breck, Michael Berrymen, Treat Williams, Mariah Bonner, and A.J. Allegra with Griff Furst in the director's chair. Look for it soon from Active Entertainment.
