At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Remembering David Bordwell: A Film Scholar Who Did More Than Anyone to Advance Academic Film Studies
He simply may have watched more movies than anyone else alive. That’s the kind of legendary detail that followed film scholar David Bordwell, dead at 76 after a long struggle with a degenerative lung disease.
Was that true? Impossible to determine, and Bordwell’s cinephilia was never about bragging or the accumulation of knowledge to score points — but instead, to share with others and enrich our collective understanding of cinema. If you studied film on any level in academia, you almost certainly have heard his name.
For several generations of film students, you read Bordwell’s “Film Art: An Introduction” in your fall freshman Film 101 class. That was me in 2004, and I believe that book was already on its seventh edition by that point — it had first been published in 1979. If you went deeper into your studies, you’d undoubtedly encounter his “Film History” textbook as well. Both of these...

Some gigantic news today for lovers of dinosaur-centric cinema, as one of the original creatives behind "Jurassic Park" is returning to the fold more than 30 years later. The "Jurassic World" trilogy may have ended in 2022 with the release of "Jurassic World Dominion," but Universal Pictures is evidently trying to keep the series alive with a new movie -- one that might be coming our way sooner rather than later. While details are scarce for the time being, it has come to light that none other than David Koepp is writing a new movie in the franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Koepp is not only writing a new "Jurassic" movie, but it is pretty far along in the development process. So much so that a 2025 release date is said to be possible, which would be downright remarkable given that this is the first thing we've officially heard about the film.

If Governors Ball is back, it must be summer in New York. The annual festival returned to Queens in early June in roomy new digs: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, just down the block from its 2021-22 home at Citi Field. The sprawling, tree-lined grounds were reminiscent of Gov Ball’s years on Randall’s Island, for anyone whose memories go back as far as the 2010s, only nicer and easier to get to by public transit. With one rainstorm aside, it was a beautiful weekend made all the more welcome...

Tony-nominated actor Anthony Chisholm, known for his work in venerated playwright August Wilson’s final installment of the “Pittsburgh Cycle,” has died, his talent management company confirmed. He was 77.
“The Katz Company is saddened to announce the passing of our longtime friend and client, Tony-Nominee, Anthony Chisholm,” president Jeremy Katz said. “Affectionately called ‘Chiz,’ he was an actor and storyteller like none-other, embodying loyalty, devotion, and compassion to his artistry.”
Chisholm met Wilson in 1990 while auditioning for “Two Trains Running,” and was cast in the role of Wolf, which paved the way for a lifelong collaboration between the two. After appearing in the first run of the play at Yale Repertory Theatre, he went on a cross-country tour with the production to various theaters including Boston’s Huntington Theatre, Los Angeles’ Doolittle Theatre and the Kennedy Center. Chisholm later reprised the role in the Broadway production in 1992. Four years later,...

Vacationing to distant places can be tricky. The more history a place has, the more exciting it can be to stay there, right? But do you really want to know all of the dark secrets in an old house? Or, even more unsettling, would you want that house to know yours? This is the setup of You Should Have Left, a new Blumhouse horror movie with a mysterious premise.
The latest film from screenwriting adaptation chief extraordinaire, David Koepp, You Should Have Left begins on a marriage that already seems to be preternaturally doomed: successful and very middle-aged Conroy (Kevin Bacon) has started a family with the much younger Susanna (Amanda Seyfried). But there’s a hidden history for each party before their May-December nuptials, with Susanna being a movie actress with dark secrets, and Conroy carrying the baggage of being accused of murder in his past. But they don’t talk about those things…...

Dame Edith Evans sterling work was instantly lauded - she won Best Actress at Berlinale and from such disparate groups as the Nyfcc, Nbr and the Golden Globes. She landed her third and final Oscar nomination in the Best Actress lineup (sadly only the winner, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner's Hepburn, was less than superb in that shortlist!). At the time Evans was the oldest Oscar nominee of all time in any acting category having just turned 80 years old. Like Star Wars, Indiana Jones is one of those few film franchises that’s impacted virtually every American has childhood in one way or another. Be it the fedora, the whip, Harrison Ford, or the spirit of high adventure that sticks in our minds, the series is a testament of the human imagination and universal storytelling.
It was with that in mind that in 2007, we were given Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, a film while not terribly horrible, had very little in common with the other films in terms of its strength. I personally came out of that film not angry, but underwhelmed. I didn't hate the film like most seemed to, but at no point in the film did I feel a sense of wonder or excitement even remotely approaching that of the trilogy.

This fall semester I started taking an Italian language class two evenings a week with my daughter, and Thursday night I was looking to decompress after our first big quiz. (Scores haven’t been revealed yet, but I think we did just fine.) So I started rummaging through my shelves and came across the Warner Archives DVD of Francesco Maselli’s A Fine Pair (1968), an ostensibly breezy romantic caper comedy which reteams Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale, a pairing their public was presumably clamoring for after their previous outing together in Blindfold (1965), a Universal programmer written and directed by Phillip Dunne, the screenwriter of, among many other notable movies, How Green Was My Valley. I’ve had a mad crush on Claudia ever since I first saw her in Circus World (1964) with John Wayne when I was but a youngster, and I always welcome the chance to visit movies of...

Christmas is a time for good cheer and family gatherings, but it’s also a time to get drunk and cause crazy shenanigans. Such is the basis for the new wacky comedy “Office Christmas Party,” which boasts a murderer’s row of comedy stars and promises outrageous fun. Character actor Michael Shannon is best known for his intense, visceral performances, often playing troubled, disturbed characters who exist on society’s margins. But like most contemporary actors, Shannon also has a soft, silly side that shows itself infrequently, like his appearance in the stoner holiday comedy “The Night Before,” his violent cameo in David Wain’s “They Came Together,” and his recent turn as Elvis in “Elvis and Nixon.” However, if for whatever reason you wanted to see Shannon lip sync on television, you will now have your chance. On Thursday’s episode of Spike TV’s “Lip Sync Battle,” Shannon will perform The Pixies’s 1989 song “Here Comes Your Man” off of their seminal album “Doolittle.” He will be facing off against “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” creator and star Rachel Bloom. Watch a teaser for the performance above.

THR is reporting that Steven Spielberg has hired writer David Koepp to pen the screenplay for the recently-announced Indiana Jones 5, which is set to be released in theaters on July 19, 2019. Koepp's filmography is all over the place, with films like Jurassic Park, The Shadow, Mission: Impossible, Stir of Echoes, Spider-Man, Secret Window, War of the Worlds, Premium Rush, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit among his many credits.
Also among his credits: Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is a huge red flag for this upcoming movie. The only thing that gives me a little bit of hope is that George Lucas reportedly won't be involved in this one, and it was famously Lucas's idea to include aliens in that fourth entry — a decision Spielberg and Harrison Ford both resisted for years before ultimately giving in. At this point, no one knows whether Koepp will...

Michael Shannon is an actor who approaches his characters with the tenacity of a bulldog, a driving, ruthless edge that fit his intense characterizations in films like 99 Homes, Man of Steel and Premium Rush. But there are other sides to Shannon’s screen persona, as seen in his Oscar-nominated performance as a brilliant but mentally-damaged mathematician in Revolutionary Road, and now in the science-fiction thriller Midnight Special.
Shannon’s character in Midnight Special, Roy, is a caring, loving father struggling to come to terms with the unexplainable powers of his eight-year-old son Alton, while risking everything to protect him from the various forces that want to capture the boy.
Midnight Special reunites Shannon with writer-director Jeff Nichols, with whom Shannon worked previously on the films Mud and Take Shelter, and both director and star were influenced by their own experiences as fathers.

Pod might be just terrifying enough to become the next breakout horror hit.
The indie film took South by Southwest by storm this past spring, and is now gearing up for a Us cinema run by unveiling a mind-bending trailer.
Pod revolves around siblings Lyla and Ed (Lauren Ashley Carter and Dean Cates), who rush to their family's Maine lake house after receiving a disturbing message from their brother.
They arrive to find brother Martin (Brian Morvant) holed up with heaps of weaponry, claiming to have locked some kind of monster in the basement.
Lauren Ashley Carter previously had a small role in Premium Rush. We Are Still Here star Larry Fessenden also makes an appearance in Pod.
Pod opens in Us cinemas on August 28.

At one time, David Koepp was the noted screenwriter behind the first entry in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, Steven Spielberg's "War Of The Worlds," and he got a credit on David Fincher's "Panic Room." But he also has his fingerprints on "Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull," "Premium Rush," and, more recently, the big box office flop, "Mortdecai." Still, his dalliance in the world of Marvel does mean he has some insight into how he'd approach the character, particularly now that the series seems to be in trouble at Sony. Speaking recently with Empire, Koepp shared some of those ideas. Now, it should be said, he readily admits he's speaking as if money isn't an object, but his plan to fix Spider-Man? More movies. His concept basically is that there would be a few different iterations of the character all at once, each focusing...

This painfully unfunny spoof of teddibly British nonsense couldn’t be less amusing if it were actually calculated to be totally laugh-free. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Mortdecai director David Koepp chats to us about the film, along with Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible & more.
This piece contains spoilers for Snake Eyes and Mission: Impossible (the first one)
David Koepp has a rather solid CV as a director, including Secret Window with Johnny Depp, the underrated ghost story Stir Of Echoes, and the really fun Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike messenger action film Premium Rush. But as a screenwriter, he’s worked on some of the biggest films of the last 25 years – Jurassic Park and its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Angels and Demons, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man.
He’s also had a hand in other notable Hollywood hits (and flops) including Carlito’s Way, The Shadow, Snake Eyes, Zathura, Panic Room, Death Becomes Her, and many, many more. He’s had a fascinating career.

Desperately seeking a “pretty movie stars chase art treasures in world capitals” vibe, this goofy soufflé ultimately falls flat
I admit to being a big fan of watching glamorous movie stars gadding around world capitols in the comedic pursuit of art treasures; I spent countless hours glued to the TV as a kid soaking in comic soufflés like “Charade” and “How to Steal a Million,” and I’ll even defend the much-maligned “Hudson Hawk” for its efforts to keep the genre alive in our modern, cynical era.

If however, like me, you’ve been growing tired of it since the second Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, you might find it a bit of a chore.

When a rare Goya painting is stolen, old acquaintance and MI5 agent Alistair Martland (Ewan McGregor) throws Mortdecai a bone – retrieve the painting and he’ll clear his tax debt. Throughout the course of his career, Johnny Depp often gets the label of playing the same eccentric character in many of his films — Blow and Transcendence notwithstanding — but for Mortdecai, that aberrant personality fits the bill quite nicely, as the new UK trailer attests.
Stepping into the shoes of Charlie Mortdecai — a roguish art dealer with a fancy for all things expensive — the movie will see Deep’s character search high and wide for an elusive bank code believed to be the key to unlocking a safe filled with long lost Nazi gold.
In this latest clip, we hear the dulcet tones of Stephen Fry guide us through the on-screen mayhem, which tees up the narrative and outrageous tone that we’ve come to expect from Depp when he steps into this brand of action-comedy. "What is that infernal thing on your lip?" If you think Johnny Depp looks terrible in the new rogue comedy Mortdecai, you're not the only one. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor both hate the actor's mustache in the new trailer from the United Kingdom. Of course, by the looks of this trailer (and the previous Us theatrical trailer), it's not just the mustache that's a turn-off. This doesn't look funny at all. This feels like something that was actually imported from across the pond and just doesn't work over here. It's dry, but not in an appealing way. It would be nice if Johnny Depp did something worthwhile again. Watch! Here's the new UK trailer for David Koepp's Mortdecai from Webzine Check: You can still watch the Us theatrical trailer for Mortdecai right here. Remember that awesome bike messenger/crime movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt called Premium Rush? It also had Michael Shannon in it and followed the best bike messenger in New York as he evaded the cops and criminals using his skills on two wheels? Yeah, that is because it sucked. As Taylor Lautner’s Twilight co-stars have proven, success is possible after the box office-breaking conclusion of the supernatural teen trilogy. Whereas Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have each found new career avenues, both landing stellar reviews for their work outside of the franchise, Lautner is still searching for his. After his attempt at acquiring action star status in the 2012 dud Abduction, he’s now literally landed on his feet in the upcoming thriller, Tracers.
Tracers follows the story of Lautner’s bike messenger Cam. A talented lad on two wheels, he’s entangled in a shady deal with a crime gang. His luck changes when he smashes his bike into a delectable stranger, Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos) and begins to pursue her – and her hobby. “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson has totally reinvented his career by working with auteurs, and Kristen Stewart is on her way by following a similar path, but what about Taylor Lautner? Maybe “Tracers” is his shot? He previously tried to go the action leading-man route with "Abduction," and the results were fairly dismal. Regardless, this pulse-pounding thriller is about a New York City bike messenger (Lautner) who is seduced by the world of parkour, and this first trailer kinda makes it look like a cross between “Premium Rush” and “Brick Mansions." Perhaps what the film has going for it is that it’s backed by Film Nation, the production company that has worked with Steven Soderbergh, Terrence Malick (his two upcoming pictures), Pedro Almodóvar, Jeff Nichols, Sofia Coppola, J.C. Chandor and Anton Corbijn to name a few. So, they generally latch on to projects with some substance, though this logline is...

There's a moment in the second trailer for the art heist comedy Mortdecai where Johnny Depp, as the title character, sighs audibly out of exasperation. That's exactly how I feel when watching this latest tease for the film coming in February of next year. Honestly, I don't know how this movie got made. No, I haven't seen the film yet, so I'm not saying that because I know it's terrible. But I'm saying that because I have no idea who this film appeals to beyond people who will see anything that Johnny Depp appears in on the big screen. Never one to shy away from a wacky wardrobe, constructed facial hair and madcap hijinks, Johnny Depp has found another vehicle for his particular brand of thespian-ism in "Mortdecai." And today a brand new trailer for the caper movie has arrived on the scene. The supporting case for the film is pretty solid with Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Goldblum, Olivia Munn, Oliver Platt and Paul Bettany all appearing in the ensemble. We bet that when the press junket interviews find them all saying how much fun the movie was to make, this will be the rare case where that's actually true. But is the movie any good? Well, that's up to David Koepp, whose last few ventures behind the camera ("Premium Rush," "Ghost Town," and "Secret Window" with Depp) don't exactly inspire confidence. Preposterous hamminess, ahoy! Yes, it’s Mortdecai, the decade’s cult classic to-be, landing with four new, moustachioed character posters. If you ever wondered what Gwyneth Paltrow looks like with a moustache – and, frankly, who hasn’t? – just hover your cursor over the strange-looking man with the blond hair below and click. With Johnny Depp in the title role and adapted from Kyril Bonfiglioli’s The Mortdecai Trilogy, the comedy-thriller looks like a goofy but goodhearted caper that shares some DNA with Charade, The Thin Man and Harry Enfield’s Playboys. Depp’s titular art dealer is thrown into a deadly world of raging Russians, lethal terrorists and MI5 agents, with only his wife (Paltrow) and a vast reserve of bonhomie to fall back on. Oh, and his manservant (Paul Bettany).Mortdecai is directed by Jurassic Park screenwriter director David Koepp, who most recently oversaw bike courier actioner Premium Rush.

There's some good news for Johnny Depp fans. The actor's next film, "Mortdecai," will be released two weeks earlier than initially planned. Lionsgate has announced that it will hit theaters on January 23, 2015. The move will put the film up against the Jennifer Lopez vehicle "The Boy Next Door." The studio is moving "The Age of Adaline" from January 23 to April 24, 2015. It stars Blake Lively and Harrison Ford. An unnecessary sequel that’s empty and arduous, little more than vignettes on vengeance and cruel parades of sociopathic power performed as gleefully ultraviolent shadowplays. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film
I’m “biast” (con): didn’t see a need for a second
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There’s the nihilism of Sin City. A place where wounded men have to remind themselves to “never let the monster out,” and a woman can “makes slaves of men,” and even “good men” are turned on by a woman’s tale of rape (which she invented, of course, because this is Sin City, where you can’t trust a dame). A place where men are nothing but how they can use their rage and women are nothing but how they can use their bodies.
And that’s none of it nice.

"Bit of a moron actually." If the perpetually drunk antics of Captain Jack Sparrow just aren't doing it for you anymore, than maybe the bumbling, foolishness of art dealer and rogue Charlie Mortdecai will get the job done. Johnny Depp takes the title role in Mortdecai, the adventure comedy from Premium Rush director David Koepp. The first teaser trailer has just arrived and it basically introduces us to the main character from Kyril Bonfiglioli's anthology book series. Mortdecai seems to have a bit of a reputation, and it's not a very good one. Do audiences want another weird, trademark Depp character in action? Watch!
