A Nightmare On Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp took to the stage today to give us insight into the Elm Street legacy, her documentary I Am Nancy, and what contemporary character she thinks is a modern-day Nancy Thompson.
Moderated by FM executive editor David Weiner, Langenkamp told the crowded theater of film lovers what sparked her desire to produce the documentary, I Am Nancy, which puts the spotlight on her Elm Street character. She called director Wes Craven and his assistant didn’t know who she was. It didn’t strike her as noteworthy until later, and it was her sister-in-law who was particularly irked, asking why Nancy wasn’t the focus of the adulation instead of Freddy Krueger. Langenkamp didn’t know. She told her, “It’s just the way it is. It’s Freddy mania. Not Nancy mania.”

The second day of the Silver Scream Festival kicked off with A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Robert Englund (Freddy, of course) and Heather Langenkamp (Nancy, of course) signing your mementoes and tchotchkes. Following that is a screening of Langenkamp’s documentary I Am Nancy, about her life following her role as Nancy Thompson, after which she will engage in a Q&A session, answering All your burning questions. And Then Englund and Langenkamp will be joined by producer Marriane Maddalena to give a tribute to Wes Craven, following a screening of New Nightmare, the director’s last Elm Street film, which served as a Scream precursor in its meta narrative.
Also on deck today: To commemorate the impact Bela Lugosi had on horror cinema, we’ll be screening four of his classic flicks, White Zombie, Island Of Lost Souls, Son Of Frankenstein, and, on its 85th anniversary, Dracula. As an added bonus,...

As a child of the 1980s, I was practically raised on Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I saw my first one, Dream Master, at age eight, when my friend’s parents weren’t home. I was hooked. Nancy Thompson was the epitome of the strong, smart teenager, a character which was not portrayed often enough in films (and still isn’t), so it was no surprise that I looked up to Nancy and the actress who portrayed her, Heather Langenkamp. What did surprise me was hearing how she never felt like she was “famous!”
It was my honor to chat with Heather about the epic, four-hour documentary Never Sleep Again, which explores every single entry into the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. In addition to starring in the documentary and doing the voice over, Heather was an executive producer on the project. We spoke about gathering players from the Nightmare universe to participate,...

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy is a four-hour documentary film that chronicles the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, as well as chronicling the rise of New Line Cinema.
Co-directed by Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch, it presents the kinds of in-depth yet light-hearted gems fans care about, not the paint-by-numbers stuff your average studio-produced Blu-ray extra disc typically regurgitates. It was made by genre fans who approach it from a place of love, but more importantly by filmmakers who understand that nothing is precious and nothing is off-limits. Heather Langenkamp, who played the ultimate final girl Nancy Thompson in three of the Nightmare films, serves as executive producer and narrator.
In exploring the Elm Street saga, the film presents photographs, storyboards, conceptual art, publicity materials, archival documents, and behind-the-scenes footage that have never been previously shared. it expands on Wes Craven's motivations in creating the first...

Heather Langenkamp is a remarkable woman. She is best known for playing Nancy Thompson, the lead in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Her portrayal of a teenager being attacked in her dreams, then for real by a dead, severely burned, child murderer was nothing short of groundbreaking for that era. At a time when the vast majority of scream queens in horror films of that time period were either playing the helpless victim or the eye candy, Heather’s “Nancy” was a strong, no-nonsense fighter who wouldn’t roll over and die. She took on the plight of teenagers in America, helping to portray them as strong and self-reliant, and showing they need to be heard and understood.

Heather Langenkamp, Nancy in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, is making the rounds promoting her new doc I Am Nancy, and while talking to Horror News she mentioned that she’ll appear in J.J.Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness.
Here’s a bit from the interview:
Do you have any other projects in the works?
Well, I had the opportunity to play a small part in Star Trek, so I’m looking forward to that. I can’t tell you anything about that, but that was a thrill for me. My husband and I worked on the makeup effects for Star Trek. He designed some of them, so that’s the thing we’re looking forward to most. Hopefully we’ll be working on something else in January. We don’t know what that will be yet, but hopefully it’ll be a really fun job.

If Rock and Shock 2011 doesn't get here soon Glenn Ciano is going to burst. Why is that, you ask? Because Glenn makes his feature film directorial debut with Inkubus, and the film will be having its world premiere this Saturday night at Rock and Shock 2011 in Worchester, Ma and he can't wait to unleash Inkubus on the unsuspecting world.
Headlining a film schedule that includes Chillerama at 5pm and I Am Nancy (introduced by Nancy herself, Heather Langenkamp) at 7pm Inkubus is slotted at the prime 9pm position and will be introduced by director Glenn Ciano and producer Chad A. Verdi.

The busiest month of the year for horror fans started with multiple events to choose from, including the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival in beautiful Big Bear Lake, California. The mountain location, with its vast forested areas, is perfect for telling campfire tales or watching horror movies. The festival itself took place in the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center with nighttime activities held on a ship, at a local nightclub, and in a restaurant, all great locations to have fun and be spooked.
The festival hosted workshops by some of the horror business’ greatest such as writer, magazine publisher, director, and producer Kerry O’Quinn; composer Harry Manfredini; and Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller. Feature films (classic and new), shorts, and medium-length films were all shown as part of the festival’s film competition and special screenings. One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. Nine, ten, never sleep again.
And with those bone-chilling lyrics, director Wes Craven unspooled a horror bad guy for the ages who is still the king of the movie villain hill. Heather Langenkamp’s portrayal of Nancy Thompson is as American as apple pie. She was the girl next door who knew how to look pretty and kick your ass at the same time. I Am Nancy From the mistresses of horror, Elisabeth Fies & Brenda Fies, comes Bleedfest, a monthly film festival whose goal is to empower female horror filmmakers. The festival which has honored such visionaries as Katt Shea (The Rage: Carrie II, Stripped to Kill) and featured such horror genre regulars as Tara Cardinal (Delivery), will feature one of the original female badasses of horror, Heather Langenkamp of A Nightmare on Elm Street, in June. Considered by many horror fans to be the ultimate final girl, Heather Langenkamp gears up to make the west coast debut of her documentary "I Am Nancy" on June 5th.
In "I Am Nancy", produced by & starring Heather Langenkamp and directed by Arlene Marechal, the focus is squarely on Heather Langenkamp and her unique experience playing Wes Craven's legendary teen heroine Nancy Thompson. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Heather asks the burning question: "Why Freddymania,...

It’s never cool to be the good girl. The one who’s kind to those she cares about, gets her work done, pays her bills on time, fends off undead killers plaguing your nightmares...
No, it’s way cooler to be a transgressor, a rebel, or hell, kind of a dick. Villains are transgressors, often seeming to speak the truth. The appeal of the villain is obvious, but what of the hero? Contemporary films would have us believe that our heroes are just as conflicted as the supposed villains, but within that we’ve lost the appeal the everyman (or woman) who rises to the challenge. Which brings us to Nancy Thompson.
Nancy Thompson is your all-American teen. She’s pretty but has uncontrollable hair. She’s funny and smart but her parents are messed up. She’s dating Johnny Depp and has a man coming after her...

This week’s Absolute Must Read is a career overview of Spanish surrealist Carlos Atanes by Rob Smart for Bright Lights Film Journal. I’ve been touting Atanes’ work for years, so it’s really nice to finally see a much more respected film website than Bad Lit also champion him. His films are rarely seen — and that’s wrong! So, after you read the article, go Netflix the film Faq.For Filmmaker, Lauren Wissot interviews Zach Clark about his subversive feature films, Vacation! and Modern Love Is Automatic. Also on Filmmaker, Nicholas Rombes proves that Paranormal Activity 2 is an avant-garde film. Hey, he convinced me!For his latest Motion Picture Purgatory, Rick Trembles tackles the Jodie Foster cult classic The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. (Coincidentally, I just saw this film for the first time recently and immediately fell in love!)Candlelight Stories has some short...

Actress Heather Langenkamp is known to fans worldwide as the tough-as-nails Nancy Thompson who boldly took on maniacal dream demon Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s classic A Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time some 27 years ago.
Since that introduction, Langenkamp has returned to the franchise on two other occasions- once as a psychology grad student trying to help a group of troubled teens in Dream Warriors and finally in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, where she had to face off against a new and improved (and far more vicious) Freddy.
Now Langenkamp is showing fans a different side to the actress- documentarian- with the release of her brand new project entitled I Am Nancy. Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and talk with the actress extensively about why this project was so important to her, the surprises she encountered along the way as she compiled numerous hours of interviews,...

Undoubtedly, Nancy Thompson has been one of the horror genre’s most beloved heroines ever since she made her big screen debut back in the original A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Played by Heather Langenkamp, Nancy was remarkable in many ways- she was one of the rare horror heroines that not only came back for several sequels, but fans also saw her character evolve from a teenager into a mother.
As someone who grew up admiring several women characters in the horror genre, Nancy has always been by far my favorite. Not only was she strong and intelligent, but she was always the perfect yin to Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) yang and wasn’t just another faceless teenage victim.
Since Langenkamp is about unveil a brand new documentary called I Am Nancy that explores the relevance of heroes and heroines in the modern horror age, I thought it...
