A Nightmare On Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp took to the stage today to give us insight into the Elm Street legacy, her documentary I Am Nancy, and what contemporary character she thinks is a modern-day Nancy Thompson.

Moderated by FM executive editor David Weiner, Langenkamp told the crowded theater of film lovers what sparked her desire to produce the documentary, I Am Nancy, which puts the spotlight on her Elm Street character. She called director Wes Craven and his assistant didn’t know who she was. It didn’t strike her as noteworthy until later, and it was her sister-in-law who was particularly irked, asking why Nancy wasn’t the focus of the adulation instead of Freddy Krueger. Langenkamp didn’t know. She told her, “It’s just the way it is. It’s Freddy mania. Not Nancy mania.”

The second day of the Silver Scream Festival kicked off with A Nightmare On Elm Street’s Robert Englund (Freddy, of course) and Heather Langenkamp (Nancy, of course) signing your mementoes and tchotchkes. Heather Langenkamp is a remarkable woman. She is best known for playing Nancy Thompson, the lead in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Her portrayal of a teenager being attacked in her dreams, then for real by a dead, severely burned, child murderer was nothing short of groundbreaking for that era. At a time when the vast majority of scream queens in horror films of that time period were either playing the helpless victim or the eye candy, Heather’s “Nancy” was a strong, no-nonsense fighter who wouldn’t roll over and die. She took on the plight of teenagers in America, helping to portray them as strong and self-reliant, and showing they need to be heard and understood.

Do you have any other projects in the works?

Well, I had the opportunity to play a small part in Star Trek, so I’m looking forward to that. I can’t tell you anything about that, but that was a thrill for me. My husband and I worked on the makeup effects for Star Trek. He designed some of them, so that’s the thing we’re looking forward to most. Hopefully we’ll be working on something else in January. We don’t know what that will be yet, but hopefully it’ll be a really fun job.

The original dream girl, Heather Langenkamp, who became an instant genre icon with her work on the Nightmare on Elm Street series, is the newest guest added to the Rock and Shock 2012 roster.

Langenkamp joins fellow horror standouts Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) and Sid Haig (House of 1,000 Corpses) as the newest genre icon added to the list. Because Glenn makes his feature film directorial debut with Inkubus, and the film will be having its world premiere this Saturday night at Rock and Shock 2011 in Worchester, Ma and he can't wait to unleash Inkubus on the unsuspecting world.

Evil Kitty Productions brought Horror to Big Bear Lake California last weekend for the 3rd year with the ever expanding Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival. Held in the beautiful mountain community of Big Bear Lake with a brand new name thanks to the decision to make Sci-Fi films a part of the festival selection this year.

MoreHorror attended the red carpet kick-off party in Hollywood last week before the festival and the energy, excitement and anticipation was at a fever pitch. Heather Langenkamp from the original Nightmare on Elm Street whose autobiographical feature documentary I Am Nancy headlined the opening night of the festival.

Amanda Wyss who played Tina in the Wes Craven classic and many other stars, filmmakers and fans of the genre gathered at a club in Hollywood to celebrate the young festival that provides a forum for both established and up-and-coming filmmakers.

The busiest month of the year for horror fans started with multiple events to choose from, including the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival in beautiful Big Bear Lake, California. The mountain location, with its vast forested areas, is perfect for telling campfire tales or watching horror movies. The festival itself took place in the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center with nighttime activities held on a ship, at a local nightclub, and in a restaurant, all great locations to have fun and be spooked.

The festival hosted workshops by some of the horror business’ greatest such as writer, magazine publisher, director, and producer Kerry O’Quinn; composer Harry Manfredini; and Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller. Feature films (classic and new), shorts, and medium-length films were all shown as part of the festival’s film competition and special screenings. We're just a few days away from September 30th start of the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival, and a few announcements have come out over the past few days with regard to additions to the lineup along with news of a world premiere taking place at the event.

11/11/11, director Keith Allan’s newest film for The Asylum, which is being released on November 1st, makes its world debut a month early at the 2011 Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival. 11/11/11 screens at the Festival’s Opening Night on Friday, September 30, at the Big Bear Performing Arts Center.
